Product Description

Product Description

Tinto Brass s first major film since the notorious Caligula stars Frank Finlay as a man who is terrified of losing his voluptuous wife Teresa (Stefania Sandrelli) because he is unable to satisfy her sexually. He arranges for her to have an affair, by taking erotic photographs of her and asking her would-be lover to develop them. Meanwhile, he keeps abreast of her burgeoning relationship by reading her diary, in the full knowledge that she in turn is reading his...

One of Brass s most critically acclaimed films, The Key is also one of his most elegant, with wintry Venetian locations, a beautiful Ennio Morricone score and a strong sense of period - it s set in 1940, just before Mussolini s Italy entered World War II.

However, it also unmistakably shows the path that Brass would eventually follow, with startlingly graphic sex scenes for a supposedly respectable film cast with serious actors.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • High Definition Blu-ray and Standard Definition DVD Presentation of the film in widescreen for the first time!
  • Optional English and Italian audio
  • Newly translated English subtitles for the Italian audio
  • Original Trailer
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly illustrated artwork by The Red Dress
  • Collector s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Tinto Brass scholar Alexander Tuschinski, illustrated with rare production stills

Beautifully shot, stunning scenery, and an interesting and somewhat sad story. It's a good movie if you want to see Tinto Brass' style as far as costumes and settings and some of the romantic elements he includes... even a few silly scenes with the faux phallus appearing here and there. But as far as the eroticism goes, two words mostly come to mind: passive and brief. It's basically the least erotic film from Tinto Brass that I've yet seen, certainly not enough screen time for anything explicit to give you a real rise. What there is to see, in context is a bit too non-consentual for my tastes, or it was just unconvincing (too obviously fake, like a stage pantomime or something). The mood is very heavy throughout... oh and there's some cross-dressing for the men... so yeah that didn't do much for me.

But like I said, it looks gorgeous and the women are certainly attractive and well-built as always. If you want to watch for the story, I'd certainly find it moving.

This is a good movie, not your traditional easy, simple exploitation thing. It is based on a very good novel thate tries to explore the motives of desire and jealousy. The pre-belic ambience in fascist Italy and the Venetian settings are a plus. Unfortunately, the remastering is not satisfactory at all. The restoration itself is good, so that the image is spotless, that much is true; all damages have been removed. However, the image has been made too bright, so bright it is really uncomfortable to watch, with blacks looking greys, all very unrealistic. On top of that, there is a bit too much DNR, so that the image is too soft, even for an early 80 movie, quite devoid of detail and lacking sharpness, and I mean the blu-ray (did not watch the dvd). Some images are quite daring for a sort of mainstream movie. Too bad about the remastering...
