Product Description

Welcome to Full English, on the surface it's about a quintessentially English family. But at its heart it's a satirical look at our popular culture, our celebrities, our monarchy, our economy, our country today. It's unashamedly rude, puerile and silly, in the tradition of British comedy but it also tells hilarious stories around identifiable characters.

Meet the Johnson family--the Dad, Edgar (voiced by Richard Ayoade) his long suffering wife Wendy (voiced by Rosie Caveliero) and their three kids the unhinged Dusty, middle child Jason (both voiced by Kayvan Novak) and the moody Goth teen Eve (voiced by Daisy Haggard). Also in the mix is the evil and horny Ken (voiced by Ollie Maltman) Edgar's father in law and boss--a multi-millionaire confectionary mogul who despises Edgar. Ken's only friend is a large green imaginary figment of his imagination called Squidge who makes him do very bad things...

From Amazon.co.uk

Animated comedies aimed at older audiences are generally the staple of American television, so it's refreshing to see a British attempt at a tricky-to-nail genre. Full English enlists the voice talents of Richard Ayoade, Rosie Caveliero and Kayvan Novak, and their tones accompany some of the members of the Johnson family.

Said family live in the south of England, living at first glance a middle class life. But under the surface, things aren't quite that straightforward. Their lives go through some bizarre twists and turns, and the script to Full English mixes in broader humour along with satirical digs.

It'd be remiss to say Full English is a raging success, though. It inevitably pales in comparison next to the likes of The Simpsons and Family Guy, which you can't help but compare it to. But it has a few problems of its own too; namely writing that doesn't fully maximise the setup.

That said, Full English is not without its moments, and there's a mixture of interesting talent at work here, that means the show does spark into life from time to time. It's also worth supporting: it does have laughs, it does have ideas, and it does have things to say. If it doesn't always say them as well as it might, it still deserves support for trying something just a little off the usual track for British TV. --Jon Foster

Love it! Was gutted to watch the show on catch up, only to find that it had been cancelled. If you like Family Guy but appreciate an English twist occasionally, then you may like this. It's ruder and the characters need even more help.

I generally hate reviews saying "if you like this you'll love that" as they generally make me run away. Fast. So I am not exactly saying that ;-) I am saying you MAY like it.

One thing is certain: If you do not like animated comedy/potty humour/bad language/adult content or if you think you are getting an English version of the Simpsons or King of the Hill etc, run away. This is probably not what you are looking for!

I am thrilled to finally have the DVD and that Missing Episode.

Full English was panned, almost universally, by the critics. In fact, the negative feedback was so bad, that the final episode of the series was never shown on television (although it is included on this disc.)
Despite this, I can't help but feel that Full English has had a bit of a raw deal.
It isn't, as some have called it: "the most mean spirited show ever". Full English isn't cruel, it is ABOUT cruelty. The notorious episode that sees the ghosts of Jade Goody and Princess Diana resurrected, only to start slagging each other off, is not malicious. The attempt was to highlight the hypocrisy of the British public, and how we change our opinions depending on which direction the wind blows. In life, Diana was a shrewd public personality, adept at manipulating the media to propagate her own ideals, and it has been said that she had a vile temper in private. In death, she was the nation's darling, and a woman who never did any wrong. Conversely, Jade Goody was a gormless fat racist, but as soon as she was diagnosed with terminal cancer everyone liked her again. It is this duality that Full English tries to expose.
It doesn't stop there: FE has a pop at the way we eschew traditional values, while deifying vacuous celebrities. Commercialism, the monarchy and the middle-class all come under fire too.
In summation: Full English is a decent little comedy. Is it as funny or clever as Family Guy or American Dad? No, but it is braver in what it tries to accomplish, and a bit more, ahem, English.
My advice? Give it a go. If nothing else, Full English is an intriguing attempt to bring something new to the genre. Does it succeed? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
