Product Description

Product Description

Historical epic based around the 1683 Battle of Vienna which is seen by many as a key event in the development of Western civilisation. The battle began on the eleventh of September and saw the advancing forces of the Ottoman Empire take on those mustered by the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in a bid to defend Vienna. Could the troops commanded by the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I (Piotr Adamczyk), his advisor Marco d'Aviano (F. Murray Abraham) and the Polish King Jan III Sobieski (Jerzy Skolimowski) repel the attack on Europe?

The period is well depicted by Polish and Italian movie - makers. A lot of love to the detail has been expanded on costumes and uniforms, weapons and siege towers.A person studying this period will notice. It's not like the Spartacus or Tudor series, with over dramatized script, and ultra violent hormons on a rampage, here the approach is more subtle. Perhaps Murray Abrahams character as the catholic monk rallying the Christian cause is too much emphisized. But by no means it is a catholic propaganda movie. Jan Sobieski maintains his place in history, as the savior of the European Culture.

There's a lot of history in this film and a lot of individual stories, so it is perhaps not surprising that at times both suffer. The set pieces in the palaces look splendid and the battle scenes are competent without being in Oliver Stone detail. You can have fun identifying the various historical characters and seeing how they measure up to your view of them. The scene where the Austrian nobles "cheek" John III Sobieski (played by Jerzy Skolimowski of all people) for not being a noble when he is both king and son of a voivode is an example of an odd item, but the attempted storming of the bastion defended by von Starhemberg was very well portrayed within its limits. There are lots of epic scenes: the charge of the Husariya and the arrival of the Tartars were two that I enjoyed.

Historically, this is when Jan Sobieski and the Polish army "saved Europe" and this film fills in gaps in the "British" view of European history and for that it is worth watching. The siege of Vienna was one of the turning points in European history and this covers the reasons simply and quite well, though epic it isn't!
Worth it for the last 15 minutes or so, particularly the Polish Hussars charge, yes, they really did wear wings into battle, and the sad end of the Ottoman commander, you really couldn't fail in those situations.

This is a fantastic subject for an epic historical film, the 1683 Battle of Vienna which is seen by many as a key event in the development of Western civilisation. But the relatively low budget of the film and lacklustre direction let it down. Still, good enough to merit viewing for anyone interested in this crucial point of conflict between the Ottoman Empire and west.

Vienna 1683 is probably one of the lesser known important battles of European history. This film is a good effort at filling out the story behind this event. The picture on the cover is that of a Polish winged hussar, the Polish heavy cavalry that dominated Central European battlefields in the 16th and 17th centuries. Vienna would be their greatest triumph.

The film features (for a short sequence) Daniel Olbrychski the star of classic Polish films such as DelugeDeluge [DVD] [US Import] and Fire and Sword With Fire and Sword- Ogniem I Mieczem [DVD] [1999] [Region 2] [PL Import] [PAL].

Worth a look in for true fans of historical drama and action movies.

Reasonable, well made acted but didn't scintillate. where did that plot go?

my kind of historic mayhem, with a lingering doubt.
