Product Description

Product Description

Robin Williams stars as difficult actor and husband, Daniel Hillard, who separates acrimoniously from his wife (Sally Field) and receives a court order limiting his visits to his children. As a result he dresses up as a Scottish nanny and gets gainful employment with his ex-wife looking after his own kids. Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone).

From Amazon.co.uk

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act--buried under layers of latex and padding--is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs Doubtfire's visage. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I wasn't expecting much from this 1993 film on BLU RAY - but the 16 x 9 picture quality is shockingly good - very clean and clear - no scratches - no flickers - and a huge improvement over the old battered DVD we've had all these years.

You also forget how young the cast was - Brosnan (so handsome and so about to nail Bond) - Sally Field as a flirting mother of two daughters (great actress with equally honed comedic chops) - and of course the incomparable Robin Williams who has to be one of the funniest and most mentally inventive people in the known Universe and any dimension beyond.

Audio is English 5.1 DTS-HD (Lossless), French 5.1 DTS and German 5.1 DTS-HD
Subtitles are in Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish and English For The Hearing Impaired.

There's a huge amount of 'Extras' as well:
1. 22 Deleted/Extended And Alternate Scenes
2. Production Office - From Man to Mrs. - The Evolution of Mrs. Doubtfire
3. Ageing Gracefully: A Look Back At Mrs. Doubtfire
4. Photo Gallery
5. Behind-The-Scenes
6. Animation Studio Segments
7. Makeup Tests
8. The Improvisation of Mrs. Doubtfire
9. Publicity Department
10. Trailers & TV Spots

It is of course a bit dated by today's standards - and takes it sweet time to get going - but once it's up and running - you remember why it appealed so much - and to so many.

A great comedy and family film reissued on a quality 20th Century Fox BLU RAY...

It is a coincidence that my copy of Mrs. Doubtfire (blu-ray) arrived at my door-step as part of the package to get free shipping, when the news of the suicide of Robin Williams emerged. With a heavy heart, I watched this 1993 movie released in 2008 again.

VIDEO:

Mrs. Doubtfire arrives on blu-ray with MPEG-4 AVC @ 28.5 Mpbs 1080p 2.35:1 encode. For a movie 21 years old, the transfer is perfectly acceptable, moderately detailed with a solid colour palette. Vibrant colors and comfortable contrast work hand in hand to craft impressive exterior and interior scenes. The picture also demonstrates a knack for rendering natural skin tones, deep blacks, and revealing delineation. Clothing and skin texture, hair and stubble, and the stitches on Mrs. Doubtfire’s dresses are crystal clear and (for the most part) incredibly sharp. The result is much more superior than the previous DVD release. (4/5)

AUDIO:

Mrs. Doubtfire features DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track. Dialogue is crisp, clear, and nicely prioritized across the front channels. The highlight of this lossless sound mix is the popular songs heard throughout. Both House of Pain's Jump Around and Aerosmith's Dude Looks Like a Lady really shine on this disc. (4/5)

MOVIE:

Mrs. Doubtfire aimed to combine the heart-wrenching drama of a family in crisis with the endless humour of a quick-witted, cross-dressing father fighting to keep them together. When considering the gamut of Robin Williams' comedies, Mrs. Doubtfire is one of the best of his lighter fare. His humour is infectious, and his chemistry with Sally Field is one of the best elements of the film.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE [1993/2015] [Blu-ray + Digital HD] [US Import] Robin Williams is Hilarious! The Film is Fall-Down Funny!

Comedy superstar Robin Williams is “downright irresistible” (The Washington Post) as Mrs. Doubtfire, the delightfully doting British housekeeper who’s much more than a woman – “she” is actually a well-meaning divorced father in disguise, trying to spend more quality time with his children without his ex-wife Sally Field catching on.
