Product Description

Chilling, erotic tale of a German countess who believes that bathing in the blood of virgins will restore her youth. As the women are drawn deeper into the ultra erotic nightmare, it will be the most uninhibited among them who shall serve as the vessel into which the Baroness passes...to continue her unholy reign of terror.

First time release in the UK.

Ok, the acting is often 'off' or to use a colloquial phrase 'lamentably bad'. However, the punctuation of the film is designed to engineer one or more females to lose clothing, remove much of their clothing, roam corridors looking over-dressed or simply awaiting the next fumble having neglected their clothing. As a horror exercise the suspense is negligible, the arterial bloody stuff scant. It does appear to be ever so slightly an erotic or pornographic arrangement of scenarios someone co-erced into the horror genre with the promise of a slap-up meal. The editing is Sarno, the lighting flesh happy. The vampiric concept is evidently sexualized to the point that the dvd cover is actually the correct level of subtlety.

Apparently uncut in this latest release, it has enough tacky, slightly perverse air or atmos to carry it to the end, even with minor horror aspects creeping in. The plot is not unlike a thinned out Rollin, the cheapness almost adds to the period tacky. Exploitation without doubt, and shouldn't be enjoyable after an hour, as most of the femmes seem to perform similar situations. There is little variation..not unlike soft porn. But there is something about the whole tawdry affair that makes it unique...at the end no clear idea what it is or what audience was to be engaged, or what as a whole makes this stand up as a film. Come unto this as an eroticised, Sarno-ised idea of a horror theme, rather than a vampire film taken as standard. Odd, offbeat, a little long for nothing much to occur. May test the patience.

The film is loosely about some people who gather at a castle where the inhabitants are under the spell of a long dead baroness who is scheduled to return through possession of one of the women. It's ultimately a softcore outing with a hint of horror in the form of Gothicism and vampires. The main problem, as some other reviewers have pointed out, is that it's overlong (98 minutes running at PAL speed) and will almost certainly bore the pants off you, and that's despite a large amount of nudity and sex! The frustrating thing is, there is actually a pretty good exploitation horror waiting to get out here. Some of the ideas are strong (a castle full of people in throes of a melancholic belief, control over their own fate and actions snatched from their sweaty palms), but its languid pacing ultimately works against it. The castle setting is delectable, and the film is also wonderfully photographed, with some attractive images and the hint of a desolate atmosphere. The girls vary but there are some good bodies on display here (the 1973 production date thankfully predating the fake models that later overtook erotica and porn), and the lead female (played by Marie ForsÃ¥ I think) grows on you as the story progresses. I think every one of the actresses either gets her kit off at some point, or is never actually seen wearing anything in the first place! The producer Chris Nebe wanted more horror and he was right, but Sarno's propensity for porn overshadowed everything I think. There are occasional sequences that reek of Jean Rollin's 70s period too, so if you are a fan of that stuff (as am I) you will probably want to get this disc, but the material is not as well handled or paced as Rollin's better films.Read more ›

The acting is a little wooden, but the sets, plot and pace of the story compensates for it. There is an Eva Green lookalike who plays the High Priestess and those girls really know how to sway and enchant. Plenty of nudity for those who like it and the mystery of who is going to win is kept to the very end - one which I didn't expect.

You have to see this film in the context of early 70's, and how you could get away with showing some nudity without getting the "porn"-stamp. Otherwise it's a really bad film...

If you like an adult themed horror film then this should be just right. Plenty of scenery of the human kind and a half-way decent story-line all add up to make an enjoyable experience.
