When I heard the Doors Live at the Bowl 68 was to be released on BlueRay I immediately put my pre-order in & I was not disappointed.
The extras give a insight into the turbulent history of the Doors, straight from the mouths of the surviving band members. I loved the fact Jim had such a massive array of Amps just for his voice to carry across the Hollywood Bowl, it drowned out the guitar that was only allowed a few amps.
The comments from the sound engineer, who put the sound track together told how Jim's mic output dropped, so he had to insert his voice from other recordings, so easy now with digital technology. But fun to see how film footage was joined with sound to make the finished flawless film.
You wont be disappointed either.

I know this concert well. I had the VHS, then the DVD and now the updated BluRay version. I must say the BluRay is superb. What immediately grabbed me is how clear the images are. There is a more intimate feel of the band on stage. You see a lot more interaction between the band, Jim's subtle cues to the band and even a few smiles from Jim, he is obviously having a great time on stage. The sound is also excellent, sounds like it may have been if you we're there, can't fault it.
Yes I am aware there was a bit of tweaking here and there to give us a more complete film but it sure is not obvious to me that there was a lot of re-editing with sound, it is seamless.
As a concert it is a great show, the band is into it and a good selection of their 1st 3 albums are included particularly Jim's poetry.
There is a bit of sloppiness and a few missed cues etc but it's the 60s man, this was the norm as a performer, it was more important to feel the vibes and the music and The Doors succeeded here.
The extras are also a good addition to this BluRay, overall it's a great music document of The Doors in a time when Jim was still in great form, before he became more unreliable.

A fantastic performance from the Doors. this DVD shows them at their best. Very well produced and remastered, brilliant sound. Some very interesting interviews with members of the band as well as showing how this DVD was put together which certainly wasn't easy ! I was a teenager in the sixties but never saw the Doors, so this was really the first time I had seen them perform and I wasn't dissapointed.

No amount of pre-release hype and predictable hyperbole from the Doors camp can disguise two fundamental issues with this release, ignoring the obvious fact that this film has already been released on VHS in 1987 and DVD in 2000: the performance captured on film is NOT one of the bands best performances; the filming is lazy and extremely amateurish.

It seems to have been ignored by most pundits and conveniently been written out of history by The Doors' post-modern aesthetic which includes "air-brushing" their original live recordings, but the raw footage used to create this DVD was originally shot for an unreleased film called "Feast Of Friends" - a so-called documentary about the band on the road. No one ever expected the complete Hollywood Bowl concert to be issued as a self-contained concert film in its own right without any explanatory footage or behind the scenes segments. And rather painfully, it really shows. Viewing the much touted (by surviving Doors members and hard-core fanbase on their exclusive Doors forum) new cut it is glaringly obvious how inexperienced and unskilled the camera 'crew' was. Yes, these people were also friends of the band and fellow UCLA drop-outs, but the extant footage primarily cuts between one distant long shot showing all the band on stage and close-ups of Morrison's face. Bear in mind that The Doors was a band and this was pre-Miami, why wasn't there more footage of the other three members? As it stands this has to be the dullest footage of ANY live artist EVER committed to celluloid. To be honest, considering the buzz about the venue that the surviving group pretends to feel when casting their eyes back through rose-tinted spectacles, it is incredible to think that not a single scrap of footage exists that even draws attention to its space.

The picture of BD is good, the sound is excellent, much better than on DVD. You can find new tracks on this BD.
