From Amazon.co.uk

The world has changed a lot in the 25 years between Die Hard and this fifth franchise rehash, but Bruce Willis is still the indestructible force of nature who is followed by gunfire and explosions everywhere he goes. In fact, he seems to have gotten more powerful and his body grown more resilient in spite of the crags in his face and the gray stubble over his ears. This time around, New York Police Department veteran John McClane has trekked to Russia for what he claims is a vacation, a running gag that lets Willis keep on quipping with the impeccable insouciance of a pedigreed action hero. What he's really up to is tracking his wayward son Jack (Jai Courtney), who John believes is on trial for murdering a mob kingpin. In the first of the movie's many dazzling set pieces, father and son meet cute just as Jack has broken out of a heavily fortified courtroom with a mysterious Russian businessman named Komarov (Sebastian Koch), who is in possession of some sort of information that's valuable on the world stage. Don't worry, the details aren't important as there's no room for plausibility in any direction. It's no spoiler to reveal that Jack is a covert CIA agent in pursuit of Komarov's file, and that instead of helping his estranged child, the senior McClane has actually bungled Junior's operation. This sets off a lengthy chase on the streets of Moscow (actually Budapest) that has father zooming after son with a tank full of caricatured Russian bad guys in the middle. Hundreds of vehicles sacrifice themselves for the hyperkinetic demolition derby between the three factions as they race through traffic-jammed streets, flattening everything made of metal and glass along the way. Though far less elegantly staged, the sequence recalls the opening chase in Skyfall, and the story rolls on in a similarly dumbed-down series of spy-movie showdowns that are all cranked up to 11. A Good Day to Die Hard is the most cartoonish sequel, given its superfluous plotting and nonstop spree of gratuitous destruction. There are a few plot twists--ultimately it's all about money, of course--but mostly it's an exercise in extravagant violence and automatic-weapons fire, with emotionless moments of rapprochement between John and Jack dropped in around the gunfights. Both of them survive beatings, car crashes, and ludicrous falls from tall buildings without injury as Komarov is lost, then found, then lost again. Dad helps his son mop up the mess by doing what they both like to do best: kill scumbags. The dizzying editing and breakneck pace builds to a crescendo at Chernobyl, where a magical anti-radiation gas explodes many things, a truck is driven out of a flying helicopter, buildings and people are shot to pieces, and a paroxysm of fetishistic, slow-motion digital mayhem turns the decrepit nuclear facility to rubble. Bruce Willis is firmly in charge throughout, delivering the mother of F-bomb catch phrases with a succession of increasingly eye-popping fireballs hot on his heels. Yippee-ki-yay, indeed. --Ted Fry

I'm a massive fan of the Die Hard series, so I was more than ready to watch this film through rose-tinted glasses, but alas, even for a dedicated fan this movie is beyond terrible. Abysmal film making is on show and even after reading the bad reviews I still failed to adequately prepare myself for it.

Director, John Moore appears to have no knowledge of the Die Hard franchise, or movies in general, and creates a sloppy mess that unintentionally parodies the action genre. Nothing in this film makes sense and the action scenes lack pacing, tension, and impact. It seems that John Moore simply doesn't know how to direct. Every scene falls flat. I'm shocked that this film was released. Although, it still managed to pull in three times its budget at the box office, so fan loyalty has carried this limping atrocity an extremely long way. What a slap in the face!

The script (penned by Skip Woods) is atrocious and consists of water thin dialogue with almost zero character development. I didn't care what was happening. I was given no reason to. This might as well have been a terrible TV episode of any silly action series that you would find channel surfing at 2am on a Sunday. This is John McClane for crying out loud!! But you you wouldn't know it. McClane has gone from being a cocky but likeable 'every-man', to A Good Day To Die Hard's characterless, boring, fearless, metal-skinned plonker.

There is no momentum or joy to be found here, only tedium. A masterclass in how not to direct a movie. By all means watch it. I did. But if you do make sure to rent it, and afterwards try and erase all memory of having seen it.

I should be given a medal for sitting through the most boring film of 2013, from start to finish the whole experience was one brain numbing endurance test. Why even bother giving this the DIE HARD tag when, ever since the first two, they have effectively altered and ruined everything that made the first 2 films uniquely enjoyable. Why not go back to basics and have it set in one, confining location (skyscraper/airport etc) when its McClane going all over, indoors...outdoors its just another action pic. Why also have they insisted on teaming Willis upwith SIDEKICKS (younger guys), McClane is a classic LONEWOLF character surviving on his wits, if I wanted teamwork Id watch Lethal Weapon. The nail in the coffin is Willis himself....he clearly made no effort, his performance is abysmal and he might as well have worn a t-shirt saying IM BORED...JUST HERE FOR THE PAYCHEQUE.

Nothing in this was believable, engaging or interesting. An insulting milking of the successful Die Hard franchise teat. Anyone with an IQ exceeding the follicle count of Bruce Willis' shameless cranium could quite easily play out this wafer-thin ham of a plot at least ten minutes in advance. Any lepparous attempt to illicit compassion or sentiment intended for the central characters must have been conceived by and intended for a genealogical ancestor of the human race, who may well have also purchased their Sunday best at a sports store and consumed reassuringly expensive French lager. My husband picked this one. I hate him.

The film starts off with a pretty big bang. John McClane, played by Bruce Willis heads off to sort out his troublesome son is Russia. He gets on a plane and lands in a place he has never been before but seems to quickly be able to locate Jack. After an explosion at the courthouse where Jack is part of a trial, an extremely long car chase takes place. While there is plenty of action going on, and a pretty good car chase, this part of the film was so long! Don't get me wrong, I love a good car scene but this one seemed to go on forever. I think I was about 40 minutes in when I looked at the clock and this part of the film had only just finished.

In regards to the rest of the plot, A Good Day to Die Hard is pretty disappointing. I was expecting something quite interesting and complex, with some really good bad guys (like in the fourth film) but that wasn't what I got at all. I found the plot to be very average, at best, and it did little to hold my interest. To add to a quite boring plot, there is the terrible writing. In previous films in this series, there have been some great one liners, some witty remarks from both Willis and the bad guys and just some generally great dialogue but this film didn't really have any of that. The one liners given to John McClane were nothing new, they were predictable and they weren't funny like they have been before.

However, while the plot and dialogue were disappointing, Bruce Willis was not. Although he gets a script not up to the standards of previous films, he does the best he can with it. Also, he is far from being the age he was at the beginning of this series but he still plays McClane extremely well. Age does not seem to be a weakening factor for Willis as he is still a great action film actor.
