Product Description

Ex-military investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise, Mission:Impossible Ghost Protocol) leaps off the pages of Lee Child's bestselling novel and onto the big screen in the explosive thriller that critics are calling "a superior thriller*". When five people are gunned down and all the evidence points to someone who swears he's innocent, only one man has the skills to take the true criminals out. The law has limits, but Jack Reacher doesn't in this full-throttle action smash hit.

When you hire Tom Cruise to be in your Tom Cruise movie, there's never a question that you're going to get your money's worth. The movie may not be worth the expense, but as a professional who delivers 100 percent 100 percent of the time, Cruise will give the proceedings his undivided attention. In Jack Reacher Cruise plays the title character with complete gusto, and even though it ends up a pretty run-of-the-mill crime drama, his presence and commitment elevates this violent, bloody, and attractively atmospheric movie to the level of, well, a reliably pleasurable Tom Cruise experience. Jack Reacher is the protagonist in a series of popular novels by Lee Child. There was some sniping among fans that Cruise bears no resemblance to Child's Reacher, a burly, shadowy former army policeman who has moved into the private investigator business--but mostly for Cruise himself. No matter; as a leading man, Cruise is always going to be himself anyway, so the ghostlike qualities built in to his character take on their own mythical qualities that allow both Cruise and Reacher to get the job done. In a somewhat unsettling opening sequence that shows a lone gunman killing a handful of seemingly random people at a public park, the mystery is born and Reacher materialises to help the police sort things out. Again seemingly, the killer has been positively identified and apprehended and is dead-to-rights guilty. But this former army sniper asks for Jack Reacher to suss out the deeper crazy truth. Reacher and the alleged gunman have a history that dates back to their military service when Reacher investigated him for heinously murdering civilians during a psychotic break, a crime that he really did commit, but for which he went unpunished due to one of those pesky legal technicalities. Nevertheless, Reacher's goal is justice, and his investigative instincts tell him this new crime points in an entirely different direction. There are several sequences that play brilliantly in the context of Reacher's skill as a killing machine on his own. One takes place in the close confines of a tiny hallway and bathroom where Reacher faces down a posse of thugs armed with guns and a baseball bat, besting them all in a flurry of acrobatic brutality. He also single-handedly beats up a gang of toughs in the alley behind a bar. But the movie's high point is an excellent chase scene between two roaring muscle cars on the dark streets of Pittsburgh (the city itself plays a great role throughout), with Cruise clearly and expertly handling the wheel himself. Though somewhat convoluted, the plot is well conceived and the large cast supports Cruise's commanding presence nicely. Richard Jenkins and Robert Duvall do their usual excellent work, though it is Werner Herzog as a wildly over-the-top villain who makes things positively gleeful in his few scenes. Of course it always comes back to Tom Cruise and his dedication to the movie's greater good that makes Jack Reacher so enjoyable, even when its reach exceeds its grasp. --Ted Fry

I picked-up this DVD on the cheap (£8.00)expecting another Tom "cruise" with the usual array of boyish charm and a heavy spattering of mildly ridiculous fight scenes (Aka Knight & Day) so as i settled into the sofa with a glass of wine I put my brain into neutral and pressed play.

I was initially taken with the title sequence and opening scenes which had a haunting coldness akin to the Dirty Harry movies and when the withdrawn, brooding but potentially very dangerous loner approach started creeping in I actually started to believe that I may enjoy the film. An hour and a half later I was still sat there with an empty glass (Unusual for me)as I had been totally and utterly engrossed in what turned out to be a totally first-class whodunnit/thriller.

Forget the books, ignore the fact that it is Tom cruise and this romp is right up there in the Dirty Harry league and for those who complained about the lack of "Action" (Mindless violence)I suggest you stick to Sly/Arnie movies.

First off I'm not a huge Cruise fan, though I do feel he has matured as an actor over the years and is certainly more than capable of delivering the goods when required.

In this case I think the film worked well, it is good...but possibly not quite the epic it might have been.
I don't want to spoil the story line (which is well paced, and interesting) Cruise is good in his role, and puts in a solid performance. He's kept himself in decent shape too, which helps the action side a decent bit.

Rosamund Pike, easy on the eyes but more importantly she can act and does well for a supporting role. The rest of the cast also quite happy with they are good in their supporting roles, also nice to see Robert Duvall in here too.

I found the film held my attention from start to finish (a good sign) This is more a thinking film so if you want a lazy night in with a casual or no plot movie, you might be better off with a Jason Statham offering. Nice camera work, good script, decent strong acting, and a good story this delivers well on that front. Action wise some good bits (this is by no means an all guns blazing no plot film), nice driving sequence and a good conclusion with a tense shoot out at the end. If there is anything to be critical, it's that this doesn't in some ways offer much new to the genre, but then few do.

Without revealing any of the story (it's really quite good and not as it seems from the start) I think this is well worth checking out if you want a thinking mans action film. A decent 4/5 film, I did enjoy it and the people watching it with me also like it. At just over 2 hours it's a tad longer than some, but I kept me watching and eager to see the story unfold. Certainly one of the better films in recent years in the genre.

As a long-time fan of the books I was, like many I'm sure, not entirely convinced that Tom Cruise was the man to bring the character to the screen. Indeed it was an occasional pastime to try to think of someone who COULD fit the role, and I have to say that I was stumped. Lee Child, however, had no qualms at all regarding Tom Cruise in the role, as he reveals in the interview included in the Blu-ray edition... and he's completely right, as Cruise is brilliant in the part. The various fight scenes are, it could easily be argued, even more startling because Cruise doesn't have the 6'5" 250 pound stature of the book-version of Mr. Reacher. If you've avoided the film for this reason, suspend your disbelief for just a few minutes and then settle back and enjoy possibly Tom Cruise's best acting yet - he really is that good.

What adds to the pleasure of this film, however, are the superb cinematography and editing. There is a palpable feeling of menace right from the start, and the pace just builds and builds throughout the film. An excellent film that does not disappoint, and does the original story full justice.

VIDEO:

‘Jack Reacher’ arrives on blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.35:1 encode. The transfer is pristine and perfect, reviewing gorgeous film-like texture. Details are spectacular and sharp, resulting in facial and clothing textures that are as crisply defined. Light grain remains over the entirety of the film, gently helping to accentuate details and preserve that sought-after cinematic flavour. Colours are perfect, revealing every nuance across the entire palette, offering a lifelike brilliance in brighter scenes and a sense of accuracy in darker scenes. Black levels are consistently pure, deep and accurate. The print is flawless, showing not a trace of wear, and there's no evidence of unwanted digital tinkering or artifacts. In short, this is blu ray perfection and a fine example of how fantastic new filmed material can look for home consumption. (5/5)

AUDIO:

‘Jack Reacher’ features a wonderful, immersive and panoramic DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio lossless track. The picture begins with a clear, well-defined, robust, and naturally spaced musical presentation that's seamlessly real, with the speakers disappearing from sight. Such balance and clarity remains through the rest of the film. Before the shooting at the beginning, listeners are treated to a very well-engineered sound effect in which the shooter's controlled breathing flows out of the back channels as he gazes through his riflescope, effectively putting the viewer behind the trigger and simulating the sensation of peering through the magnified lens at the targets. The gunshots ring out powerfully and authentically, as they do for the rest of the movie. The end shootout in particular is a thing of sonic marvel, a reference-level sequence if ever there was one.
