Product Description

Product Description

Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse return in their double BAFTA award-winning sketch show.

The kings of the bang-on-the-nail sketch are back with a blast as the inspired characters and spot-on spoofs just keep on coming – but don’t fret, the old favourites are all here too…

This series welcomes the incomprehensible Horse Trainers, the hard-bitten American Cops, the overlooked but jolly Minor Royals (featuring Victoria Wood), the gossipy 50s Typists (featuring Kevin Eldon), the bizarrely threatening Portuguese Curse Lady and the Everything’s Better in Scotland bloke. Of course, their affectionate but wicked satire reappears in gems such as When Life Was Simpler, remembering a time before such inconveniences as holding a driving licence or having to remember the name of your wife, and in fabulous spoofs of the likes of Question Time, The King’s Speech and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And, there’s still a place for some brilliant old faces as The Surgeons, I Saw You Coming, Is He a Quare? and the Dragons’ Den.

I would always welcome more Harry & Paul but this series does seem to be the weakest yet. I don't want to pour too much cold water on it because the charm, the wit, the atmosphere and the extremeness of the caricatures that Harry & Paul famously provide is all still here, but some of it though does feel to be wearing a bit thin in this series ,sad as I am as a fan to say. It labours on past successes from the first three series a lot and when you do get a weak sketch you often find it repeated annoyingly throughout the programme often with a disproportionate amount of time spent on it as well. The series is shorter quite literally than the first three because only 5 episodes have been made and although it's billed in the Radio Times as 6 episodes we are actually just getting highlights of Series 3 for that last one which makes me wonder before I get the DVD whether we are actually going to get that highlights episode included. What we do get new isn't necessarily new material either though unfortunately as each episode rehashes a lot of ideas from the previous 3 series which always seemed much more fresh and highly innovative. We have been introduced to some great new Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse characters in the Noughties, the pisstaker who runs "I Saw You Coming", the "Benefits", "Parking Pataweyo", the intellectual builders, the Radio 4 producers who can stop a white van man in his tracks when they announce they are making a documentary, these ideas poked some much needed fun at our sterile society through hilarious stereotypes, Harry & Paul are happy to stay away from being too PC and have something to say about Noughties life and the sketches from the first three series reflected that but in 4 what is the best we have when you think about it, the Scotland obsessive?Read more ›

This series has be pre-edited by the BBC (not BBFC) as to what I am not 100% sure but we can speculate never the less:

A Re-Edited Version of Episode 4 was passed 15 without BBFC cuts for moderate sex references and discriminatory and racist language for:

UK 2012 2Entertain [Season 4] R2 DVD at UK Amazon released on 10th December 2012
UK 2012 2Entertain [Season 1-4] R2 DVD at UK Amazon released on 10th December 2012

Pure speculation, but it looks like this is another example of the BBC cutting jokes about children after sensitivity resulting from the Jimmy Savile scandal.

A couple of months earlier the same episode had been passed 15 uncut for strong language and moderate sex references. The uncut version ran 1:02s longer than the Re-edited Version.

Similarly episode 3 has been pre-cut by 1:31s.

Good old BBC as Politically Correct as ever

After three good series of "Harry and Paul", this is a major disappointment. What on earth went wrong? It feels as though the two stars are simply clearing up a contractual obligation.

The returning characters from previous H&P series are now so stale they should be served in a British Rail snack bar, and the new characters just aren't funny. In fact a lot of them have no point whatsoever, just seem like a way of stretching the show out to its obligatory half-hour. I kept waiting for some kind of pay-off or punchline to those "gypsy curse" and "99" sketches, only to be left wondering whether someone had given up halfway through writing them. The "Question Time" parody is completely hampered by the fact that, as with the BBC's "Have I Got EU-Approved News For You", it hasn't the bottle to address the real issues or take on the people a satire should be taking on, and so picks on an easy target - in this case the general public are more the butt of the sketch than the politicians. The "When Life Was Simpler" sketches are just a weak, toothless attempt to re-live the far more successful 30s/40s parodies of the original 1990s Harry Enfueld series, and the "Harry and Paul as themselves" moments are just self-indulgent padding.

There is the occasional laugh, and the two leads (both of whom talented, funny people who deserve better than this) manage to do the best they can to enliven the duff scripts. But this is really for die-hard fans and completists only.

Well I think that Harry and Paul are both talented comedians because I like them. Their timing and their comedy humour
are just fantastic. The characters in the fourth series are good. My particular favourites in the fourth series are Charles and Sherdian the hospital surgeons the Is He a Quare pair the parody of Dragons Den and Sherlock on the Buses. I mean all of them are good but I think that these are my personal favourites.
Overall I recommended the product to any fan of who is interested in comedy or someone who just wants to have an
occasional laugh.
Thank you Amazon.co.uk. Five stars all round!

Good sense of humor with intelligible jokes. Generally speaking I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in buying this type of DVD.
