Product Description

Product Description

For the first time on blu-ray and remastered DVD, Shinya Tsukamoto's cult classics have been digitally restored from their original negatives to be presented in high definition in this double-disc set featuring brand new exclusive extras as well as Shinya Tsukamoto's 'Tetsuo' prototype short-film 'The Adventures of Electric Rod Boy'

Tetsuo 1: A strange man known only as the "metal fetishist", who seems to have an insane compulsion to stick scrap metal into his body, is hit and possibly killed by a Japanese "salaryman", out for a drive with his girlfriend. The salaryman then notices that he is being slowly overtaken by some kind of disease that is turning his body into scrap metal, and that his nemesis is not in fact dead but is somehow masterminding and guiding his rage and frustration-fueled transformation.

Tetsuo 2: Body Hammer - Sequel to "Tetsou" this time has the Iron Man transforming into cyberkinetic gun when a gang of vicious skinheads kidnap his son. When the skinheads capture him, they begin to experiment on him...speeding up the mutative process!

whats so awesome about this release? both movies have the first bluray release ever. they got beautiful resotred here from the original negativ in cooperation with tsukamoto himself!

I have long wished for this double release and now I have it in all its body shock/metal mutation horror. Taguchi is/was a major talent. Yes, Tetsuo 2 is almost a remake of the first movie, but his visual inventiveness is unparalleled - as the posters said, it is David Lynch meets David Cronenburg and encompasses the best of both. The stop frame animations must have taken so much time and effort to perfect but the world he creates, in stark industrial Black and white, is superbly evocative of the dystopian eighties. He has clearly influenced the makers of Tokyo Gore Police and Ichi The Killer but this is the template. A unique masterpiece. TETSUOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Tetsuo: The Iron Man and Tetsuo: Body Hammer get an outstanding release by cult classic director Shin'ya Tsukamoto.

The aspect ratio on these films is presented in the original 4:3, which is a tad annoying as it doesn't fill up the screen and you get huge black bars on both sides, but after awhile you get used to it and you have to bear in mind that Tsukamoto used a specific camera so the ratio won't be in 16:9.

The films have never looked or sounded better. If you own a multi-channel amplifier you will really see the benefits of the outstanding industrial sound design and score, especially with Iron Man.

I've not yet looked into the extras, but the fact that both films are presented on one disc and the bonus content (which includes an interview with Tsukamoto as well as an early 44 minute film, as I didn't have the time as I watched both 1 and 2 back to back) means this is pretty much essential if you're a fan of Tetsuo and cyberpunk films and especially of director Tsukamoto himself.

Third Window Films have done an excellent job here. They seem to be the only noteworthy Blu Ray distributors around at the moment who release great Asian cinema (almost a take over from Tartan, who have sadly gone out of business). Arrow Video are also noteworthy as well as BFI, Optimum and Eureka. The rest seem to be re-releasing films already out on Blu Ray but in steel book editions or Hollywood crap like Iron Man 3 (the one with Robert Downey Jnr).

Third Window Films have also released a good share of another Japanese master director Sion Sono (Cold Fish, Love Exposure, Himizu and Land of Hope) as well as another film by Tsukamoto called Kotoko (his latest), which I also ordered, and Tokyo Fist get's a release in late November.
