I see that this has finally been listed by Amazon so I wanted to review it. Ghost Keeper is a great little 80's horror/slasher film that has definitely been forgotten over the years. The film follows three friends (1 man and 2 women) who are on a trip in the snowy mountains. When they become lost in the wilderness and one of their snow mobiles breaks down they seek shelter in a seemingly abandoned hotel they discover. Their plan is to take shelter there until the snow stops, but soon after they discover the hotel is inhabited by a strange old lady and then more strange goings on start to begin..
If you're a fan of 80's horror films then this really is a must own. Personally I really love this film and the atmosphere and snow bound setting is fantastic. It's slowly paced but that works in its favour and it builds up the sense of dread very effectively. The set up might be simple but the story is interesting as it doesn't completely have the feel of the norm. The creepy atmosphere is as good as it gets and definitely has a far more spooky feel compared to many. Also you've got a few violent killings and suspense too.
Apparently the film ran out of money before the end so many plot scenes that were too expensive to shoot were axed and instead they made it up as they went along. But the director did a fantastic job in finishing it. Definitely a treat for those who love their horror/slashers with added creepiness.
As for this Code Red DVD release. The transfer has some obvious wear and tear but I doubt we'll ever see this released with a perfect picture. The extras are good with directors com and featurette. Unfortunately this is never going to be a cheap buy as it's only available from the Code Red website. If you want this film then you'll have to bite the bullet and pay around the £20 mark for it.
4.5 Stars.

Ghost Keeper was a pleasant surprise. Filmed 30 years ago in cold snap of Canada's Rocky Mountains- this film is laced with atmosphere. It is be warned a slow burner but the characters and dialogue do enough to draw you in.

The music is highly effective and composed by Paul Zaza-. So the film is about a group of ego trip tourists who believe the world revolves around them. It is true they are not likeable but that goes well within the context of the film. So they get cocky and get lost and end up at a secluded run down hotel and that is where the terror begins.

The info on the front of the box talks about the last 20 mins being amazing, but I was let down by that statement. The finale just drags- but it doesn't hinder the film.

This Code Red release is chockablock full of interesting extras considering that the film isn't that well known.

If you are a serious horror collector then this film is an essential purchase.

HASH(0x9fd5f63c) out of 5 stars A lost Canadian shocker restored! Love you COD RED! 5 May 2012

I have been very impressed with the dvd's Code Red has put out and this gem is another addition to my vast collection! We get a nice Widescreen cut from one of the last surviving 35mm and great digital sound. I Remember watching this movie in the dark as a kid - it was on a very early morning on a snowy winters' day and I was enthralled in the movie. It was a fun little flick that stuck with me for years - it has a creepy lodge location, a sense of isolation, dread and a cool brooding score to match. A very surreal dream-like atmosphere follows this movie till the very end. A must have for any collector of 80's horror and/or avantgarde tastes - I just love that a lot of these lost 80's horror flicks are getting released and the restoration they deserve. Thanks Code Red!

HASH(0x9fd5fa44) out of 5 stars Great transfer of an obscure film 9 Oct. 2012
By Clapton Fan - Published on Amazon.com

I think we can all thank Code Red for digging up older and forgotten titles from one of the booming ages of horror - the 1980's.

However - this film is slightly tedious and incoherent - but saved by great locations and some seriously solid atmosphere.

It is said this movie was shot in order of the script, and when finances ran out the crew had to re-write the 2nd half on the fly - which is a real shame. While the movie is nothing to rave about; the presentation is - and should be a must for any collectable of old and forgotten films.

I'd delve more into the plot if I could - but this title relies more on locations than actual story (mainly due to the fiscal woes of the production).

Still - Code Red should be given kudos for getting these little seen movies out there - even if they quickly go out of print due to the limited number of pressings.

Passable entertainment as a horror film but a recommended purchase for 80's horror enthusiasts.

HASH(0x9fd5fac8) out of 5 stars great to have dvd 22 May 2012

This is another one of those almost lost films that finally popped up on dvd and is worth the money to buy it. It isn't a fast moving film but it has beautiful scenery and kinda reminds me of a cheap version of "THE SHINING" it mostly takes place in an old hotel called Deer lodge where a strange old lady lives and looks over the lodge that has been closed now for about 5 years. Remember it doesn't move fast but it is very nice to look at the scenery.

HASH(0x9fd5fc6c) out of 5 stars Creepy once you can figure it out! 9 Mar. 2013
By Brian R - Published on Amazon.com

I wanted to get a copy of this film because of it being a rare film. That and the fact, I think the Canadian horror films from the early 80s aren't half bad. I picked this up (finally at a great price too!) and was in a major hurry to watch it. Well after seeing this film, I was left scratching my head. After reading other reviews, I can agree that the atmosphere of the film gives it a creepy feeling. The plot was extremely confusing. At first we have a lodge in the middle of nowhere, a creepy old lady, She gives no information leaving our characters to kinda figure out what is going on. After that, the plot seems to split and become 3 separate plots! Is the house haunted; Is this some kind of Canadian urban legend about a creature that eats flesh, or is this a story about "The Family That Stays Together, Slays Together" type film? The more confusing part is the end of the film. Then all 3 plots disappear, and you are left saying "huh???" In the end, I do not want to give it 1 star, because for an early horror film of the 80s it is original (not a typical slasher such as Friday the 13th) but its not worth 5 stars just because the film never really found an identity! If you can find this film for cheap, by all means add this to your collection. If it goes for more than $20 dollars, you better be a avid fan of 80s horror films to want to buy it, otherwise you may be sorry!"

HASH(0x9fd5fb40) out of 5 stars Starts out fine but eventually falls apart. 30 Dec. 2013
By The Baron - Published on Amazon.com

According to the IMDb, the filmmakers decided to improvise the second half of the film after finding that the money was running low. That fact is glaringly obvious when you watch this movie. It starts out well enough with some nice snowy locations and, once they arrive at the lodge, some creepy atmosphere. The old lady they find there is obviously a few miles south of sane, but Georgie Collins' performance thankfully doesn't stray too far into the outer limits. Sherri McFadden is not given much to do as Chrissy other than be obnoxious and flirt with Murray Ord as Marty, a guy who should have the word "jerk" tattooed on his forehead considering how far he goes to let you know that he is, after all, a jerk. Riva Spier fares better as Jenny, but she is a little flat in spots. These detriments might be easier to forgive if the story had been better. As it is, the film builds to a certain point and then devolves into muddled nonsense. Still, I am glad that Code Red is still out there releasing lost and forgotten cult films to the home entertainment market. Whereas this film falls short, their effort in releasing it does not, and they deserve the continued support of all of us who love and appreciate these strange cinematic curios.
