The New York City street gangs of Chinatown and Little Italy are rattling their sabers and they become drawn when a Chinese restaurant opens up on the Italian side of Canal Street. In the middle of all this tension and violence, beautiful Chinese teenager Tyan-Hwa (Sari Chang) falls in love with Tony (Richard Panebianco), a pizza delivery boy. Of course, continuing with in the West Side Story vein, the parents of the two lovebirds are against the match. The basic story..There is gang warfare between Chinatown and Little Italy. When a Chinese girl and Italian boy fall in love it can only lead to tragedy as the violence gets out of control.
Abel Ferrara is one of my favourite American directors and "China Girl" is an entertaining and atmospheric crime thriller. It's fast paced and gritty but not as sleazy as most of the directors other work. Right from the start it's easy to tell this is an Abel Ferrara film with its raw feel, moody visuals, religious symbolism etc. The action is violent and bloody with some great fights and although this type of story is familiar it remains fresh and is very enjoyable. The relationship between the doomed lovers is convincing and touching and there's a good supporting cast including James Russo and David Caruso.

I love this film,it's a 80's retelling of romeo and julliett..set in New Yorks lower east side..i remember watching film night around the release time,and barry norman comparing this film to driller killer..it is very different,abel has moved on a lot since then..
I thought the main 2 leads were good actors,but i wonder what happend to them?? sari chang was so pretty!! i know she played a TV reporter in abels film "king of new york" and then vanished into thin air..nothing about her on IMDB site..and it's a shame because i wanted her for my next wife..if you're reading this Sari,get in touch!!

A very colourful and fast moving film starring David Caruso, but not the best role for him. He made a good job from a poorly scripted part, but the whole film was lacking in impact. Not the fault of the actors but it has been added to my growing Caruso collection and will get watched again. It contains the usual love and violence of family feuds and division resulting in tragedy based on Romeo and Juliet, but Caruso was not cast in the right part or on screen enough, and apart from him not a big name production.

I find this just a violent movie. There is nothing original in it, a part from the unusual Italian-Chinese link set in New York. For the rest is just blood and street gang fights.
I got this movie because of its positive reviews, but I am disappointed.
