Soundtrack and Audio Problems:
Early customers of this title experienced problems with the audio tracks included on the discs. Faulty products were recalled by the manufacturer, replaced, and the issues have now been fixed.

  • Lost Highway - some customers experienced intermittent sticking of the disc, and the film was authored in 2.0. The sticking has been fixed and the 5.1 soundtrack reinstated.
  • Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me - some customers experienced audio glitches, and the film was authored in 2.0. The film has been reauthored in 5.1 and the audio glitches fixed.
  • Wild at Heart - this film was originally authored using the 2.0 censored US master, and has been reauthored using the UK uncensored 5.1 cut.
  • Dune had no problems and is presented in HD with 5.1 sound.
  • Blue Velvet had no problems and is presented in HD with 5.1 sound.
  • Eraserhead had no problems and is presented in HD with the original 2.0 stereo as requested by David Lynch.
Please note: some packaging may still state 2.0 stereo on certain films, however all films are presented in 5.1 surround except for Eraserhead which preserves the original 2.0 stereo.

Just thought I'd pitch in, I got this today for Christmas. Checked my discs, all seem fine. Everything except 'Eraserhead' is 5.1 sound, 'Lost Highway' does NOT stick. So it does appear that the reported faults have been fixed. Buy with confidence if you're a Lynch fan (my old DVD of 'Blue Velvet' looked like it was mastered off a video tape! This version is a 100% improvement over that!), but just double check when you get it that you have this fixed copy of the boxset. It would appear if you buy it now then you'll get what you should and as described. Mine is fine and I have no regrets at gettng it. Great stuff!

I was encouraged that there was a note reassuring potential buyers that "Faulty products were recalled by the manufacturer, replaced, and the issues have now been fixed". Unfortunately, I received the old version with the issues... Lost Highway, Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart all had 2.0 rather than 5.1 audio and Wild At Heart was the censored US version. I returned the set for a refund. Unfortunately, it seems a lottery as to which version you'll get.

The non-faulty box states on the back specifications, that Wild At Heart, Twin Peaks and Lost Highway are in 5.1 or 2.0 sound whereas the faulty only states 2.0. and you are given an option for the sound on the discs main menu. Also both Twin Peaks and Lost Highway state it is 1080i rather than on the faulty box 1080p. The Wild at Heart is still the censored US version.

I had been looking forward to this box set ever since it was announced.

I am disappointed to have found two of the films have faults in them

1. Lost Highway will freeze and skip a good 5 min of the film.
2. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me has terrible audio problems jumping from high to low pitch through out the film.

This set should really be recalled by universal.

Poor.

2 stars only because FWWM and Lost Highway are 1080i and stereo only, should be 1080 24p and lossless 5.1.

I've been waiting for this set a long time, so this is a significant disapointment.

I'd like to thank those on this site (and other sites) offering the heads-up on the fault on Lost Highway.

My wife bought me this for my birthday at the end of June. I was really looking forward to it. It arrived in the post yesterday, and upstairs it went to be wrapped up. Having seen these reviews though I broke it to my wife that we may have a faulty product. We got the box-set, checked Lost Highway, and Lo and Behold: Freezing at 1hr23mins46secs.

You know, I was SO looking forward to this purchase, I'd have swallowed the other faults; the 2.0 sound on many of the discs, even the reported audio drop-out at various points on the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me disc. I'd have been disappointed, but I'd have rolled with it. But to add those shoddy errors to a film that simply doesn't work - it's just not on.

So, we've printed out our return labels and it goes back to Amazon first thing in the morning. I'm gutted.

How has a director of such gravity AND popularity ended up being so shabbily treated on the blu-ray format?

I cannot believe how big Universal has screwed us on this release. I live in America where unfortunately David Lynch isn't terribly popular (at least not enough to get a release like this). In the states there are absolutely no releases of most of these films on blu ray (I already have the "Blue Velvet" blu ray but that's it). Anyways, the mastering on most of these discs are garbage, the scene skips in "Lost Highway", and that and FWWM are in 1080i but are advertised as 1080p! What the hell! I would love to just get some replacement discs shipped to my house. I really do not feel like sending this back across the pond for a refund. I hope they do some sort of replacement for these two discs in particular.

Well the answer to the question above is, 'not quite', but I'll get to that at the end.

I've been following the reviews on this boxset with interest. The initial horror at the various glitches and the films in stereo, the hints that fixed replacements were being provided, the notice saying that everything had been fixed and finally confirmation from a couple of reviewers, albeit with a DVD copy of Lost Highway being provided that had to be replaced. But this too, seems to have been fixed.

Anyway, given Lynch is one of my favourite directors, I thought I'd finally take the plunge. The boxset arrived today from Amazon and I quickly confirmed that Lost Highway was indeed the blu ray copy. I then sat down next to my blu ray player and checked everything out. I have not watched all the films in full, just flicked through to check everything is in order.

I can confirm that all films are in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 apart from Eraserhead which is in PCM Stereo. Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks and Lost Highway also have a stereo audio option, though Dune and Blue Velvet do not.

Wild At Heart is not pixellated in the scene where Bobby Peru blows his head off. I've read it is the original UK cut.

My Lost Highway does not stick at the time mentioned in an earlier review.

So it looks OK? Well, I thought so, but then I realised that whilst the first 4 films are 1080/24p, Twin Peaks and Lost Highway are 1080/50p, thus playing at 25fps rather than the 24fps of film. Thus, they are running too fast or at the speed of DVDs.

A bit of a shame that. Probably not enough to send the box back, but still, has a box set release ever been accompanied by such serial calamity?
