Interesting spin on the vamp flick in two parts. For plot see other reviewers or IMBD. I understand this movie was Rollin's first feature and basically an extention of one of his short films. If Cocteau and (post 'Weekend') Goddard had made a movie together it would have looked like this. Not bad transfer, but the package could have done with some relevant extras.

An original, subversive and boldness film that talks better than any other of Rollin's movies about his peculiar conception of cinema:a mixture of gothic horror imaginary, politic surrealism, dark romanticism and pulp sexy comic book aesthetic, and supported in camera experimentation and improvised performances . The film is conceived as a collage of images, following the estructure of his favourite painter, Clovis Trouille, solution that allows him to blends much of the referents that conform his ambiguous imagination joining with talent Gothic and romantic tradition with avant-garde concepts and experimentation . This is :the oniric poetry of Tristan Corbiere, the sexy shocker surrealism of Georges Bataille, the provocative and anticlerical cinema of Luis Bunuel, the bizarro and pulp melodrama style of Gaston Leroux and the poetic realism of Jacques Prevert.The picture is shown as a film in two parts,working the closing credits of the first one as an inflexion or keyhole to a surreal vampire tale . An amoral,ludic and non-narrative vampire's picture, half romantic, half conceptual and totally experimental.

A trio of psychoanalysts set off to disprove the legend of the four vampire sisters, only to find that they were gravely mistaken when they encounter the girls living in a dilapidated mansion. None survive when the villagers return to kill them all, but each of the slain characters are revived in the second-half when the Queen of the Vampires returns to experiment on the four girls. Thus begins the career of France's most notorious Horror director, Jean Rollin. Rollin's first feature film dives right in to the surreal and unexplained world of dreamy mysticism for which the director has always been known. Unbound by linear structure, THE RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE blends Rollin's existentialist cinematic approach with High Gothic imagery, sexual fetishism, and the Avante Guard. For all the oppressive atmosphere and skilled cinematography, however, THE RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE simply lacks character and plot cohesion, leaving the audience guessing as to who or what is going on at all times. The stark editing techniques and rather poor acting can be explained away as being chic and independent, but as a result, the film is only likely to appeal to the eccentric Horror viewer.

Brilliantly filmed and very enjoyable!! I went into this film with modest expectations having read some reviews on it prior to viewing it myself. A few minutes in, it became apparent to me that I don't think we, the audience, are supposed to take this film at face value..... instead I believe the true meaning of this film is in the subtext....I thought geez, didn't know I was watching a Bergman film. ...my take on the film: I believe this is a film really about personal conflict about how we perceive ourselves and how other view us.... Next time you watch the film substitute the word "Director or any profession" for Vampire every time you hear it.....The girls represent different characteristics of one individual....the voice of the man at the statue in the field, represents the individuals inner voice. The 3 analysts that come to cure them represent external people e.g. friends or family that try to sway the individuals opinion on who he or she is (e.g. mommy and daddy are doctors so little Johnny will be a doctor someday as well)..The way I see it the term VAMPIRE is just a metaphor in this film........B.T.W. this review refers to Part 1 of the story...Part 2 your guess is as good as anybodys.

I became interested in Rollin after reading and article about his work in the NY Times:

Many of them are very good -- Fascination Fascination [Blu-ray] has been described as the Rollin film to see if you're just seeing one. Rape of the Vampire, which started out as a short and then was lengthened, and I think was his first full-length film, is probably his weakest film. It's of interest if you want to see all of Rollin's work.

Nobody buys a Jean Rollin film for the plot. Sit back and be boggled by visual delights, or disturbed by them.
This film is set in two parts and begins with four sisters who believe themselves to be vampires, and some ends up being one.
I can't explain much because, I have to admit, I didn't understand much of this film. But it looks good.
