There’s something delightfully old school about futuristic prison movie, Lockout. The film comes from the pen of Luc Besson, and sees Guy Pearce as Snow, the usual framed innocent man that the movies like to present us with. Through a serious of story hoops, Snow agrees to head off to an orbiting prison by the name of MS One, to rescue the daughter of the president. It’s probably best not to look too closely at the story, to be fair, as it doesn't get much more plausible than that.

Lockout does work, though. In fact, it works particularly well. Pearce is an excellent action lead, and directors James Mather and Stephen St Leger keep things pacey, stretch their budget well, and know how to put together an action sequence. The result of this is a film that’s thumping good fun, that’s derivative certainly, but entertaining nonetheless.

The disc is bolstered by some welcome extra material. It’s not tricky to see why the unreleased scenes didn’t make the final cut, but they’re no less interesting for that. Promotional interviews are also included. But it’s the behind the scenes supplements that are the most interesting, especially when the focus turns to the MS One floating prison, and how it was put together. It all adds to a solid package, and a wise choice of film for a relaxing night in front of the telly. --Jon Foster

Set in the near future, a falsely convicted ex-government agent has one chance at obtaining freedom.

He must undertake a dangerous mission to rescue the President's daughter from rioting convicts.

At an outer space maximum-security prison.......

So basically the film is the rejected 'Escape From Space' idea of sorts they had in the late nineties, and Guy Pearce is a mix of McClane, Plisskin, and Ryback, but at least the film is fun.

Coming from the house of Besson, if you follow his brand of action films, right back to Kiss Of the Dragon, you know what to expect, and this is no different.

The effects are pretty lame, but this film is all about the bad guys, and the banter between Snow and The first Daughter.

The script can be poor at times, but the one-liners are something that Willis would be proud of, and the film is claustrophobic enough to keep it on the right side of tense.

It's flawed in many ways, and as i've already said, you may get deja vu seeing this, because it's 'inspired' by so many films.

But as those films are very god anyway, this passes the time with ease.

Surprisingly good Sci-fi based around a rescue mission from a high security space prison orbiting the earth where serious offenders are kept in cryostatis. Guy Pearce plays the good-guy-turned-bad-guy-turned-good-again guy in a slightly Die-Hard fashion and has to rescue the president's daughter from the prison after a riot and escape attempt breaks out while she is visiting the space prison on some kind of humanitarian work. That sounds pretty standard but in a slightly different setting the film feels like a lot more than that with its subplots and I think Guy Pearce is probably at his peak here - I think the best I've ever seen him in any role as an actor. Not what I was expecting from him at all, the film is visually strong (other than some mediocre effects here and there) and fast paced with some great hard-hitting action. It often feels tense and claustrophobic and kept me interested through to the end.

More violent than I was expecting which worked well for me and suits the film's feel and backdrop - would definitely recommend as a decent action movie with a slightly different take the standard hero/action movie.

Set in the not too distant future, Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) stars as a wisecracking government agent, Snow, who is wrongly convicted of murder & selling state secrets. But he may just have a way to redeem himself, as the presidents daughter Emilie Warnock (Maggie Grace -Taken) who was visiting a maximum cryostatis prison in space to check on the well being of the inmates, is smack dab in the middle of a prison riot. Only one person would be crazy enough to go in there, Snow!

To start with it's quite obvious from reading the synopsis alone that this is a reworking of the classic Escape From New York with Kurt Russell. None the less, Lockout turns out to be a very watchable brutish action movie, but with some intelligence thrown in there, in the shape of the sub plot rumbling underneath the main events. The action is fast, furious, brutal & smart in places, but there are a couple of far fetched moments that even the most hardened of action fans may raise an eyebrow too. The CGI & special effects used are pretty good on the whole with some exceptions here & there, but, considering the budget worked with it's not surprising. Some interesting ideas used in places, no doubt thanks the man who came up with the idea of the film, Luc Besson. In this unpretentious, unashamedly derivative SF action B-movie Guy Pearce’s wise-cracking, disgraced ex-government agent Snow is tasked with rescuing the U.S. President’s daughter from an orbiting maximum security space prison after she is taken hostage during a prison riot. Pearce’s Snake Plissken-esque anti-hero displays admirable derring-do as he battles hostile inmates driven mentally unstable as a side effect of being cryogenically frozen and kept in a state of suspended animation. Accompanying the seemingly never-ending action there is an engaging rough humour, which includes a marvellously bonkers performance by Joseph Gilgun as a tattooed Scottish psychotic with glowing eyeballs, brother of Vincent Regan’s ruthless and only slightly less psychotic leader of the revolt. Good support is provided by Maggie Grace, who plays the President’s daughter with an appropriate feistiness and stubbornness and Peter Stormare as an uncompromising U.S. secret service chief. Despite a conspiracy backstory concerning a lost briefcase which ‘tops and tails’ the movie, this film is essentially undemanding and entertaining with a straightforward plot, no character development, adequate special effects, slickly and stylishly packaged and presented. Not perfect by any means, but not many films are.
