Banned for 20 years......

One of the most controversial films ever to be released in the UK

The only film in the UK to ever been banned for blasphemy

Visions of Ecstasy, a short, experimental art film made in 1989, is the only film ever to have been banned outright in the UK solely on the grounds of blasphemy. Further its depiction and interpretation of the erotic imaginings of the 16th Century Carmelite nun, St. Teresa, were such that the films banning was upheld in an historic judgement at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in a case that took seven years to reach its conclusion. Now, due to the abolition of the UK's blasphemy laws in 2008, Visions of Ecstasy is finally being released.

Included with this historic film is also a 40 page, booklet written by the films director, Nigel Wingrove, in which he explains how the film came to be made, the effect its banning had on his life and future work, and how his continuing battles against film censorship led eventually to the resignation of the BBFC's then director, JamesFerman, the legalisation of pornography and a general relaxations of film classification overall.

Also included on this DVD are the director s first erotic short film, Axel (1986) and his nunsploitation feature, Sacred Flesh (2000), in which a Mother Superior struggles with her sexual desires in a series of imagined dialogues with Mary Magdalene will her mind torments her with images of sexual perversion, lesbianism and sadomasochism.

Additional extras include extensive stills, press gallery and interviews.

BBFC Certification Letter

"The Board recognises that the content of the film may be deeply offensive to some viewers. However, the Board s Guidelines reflect the clear view of the public that adults should have the right to choose their own viewing, provided that the material in question is neither illegal nor harmful. In the absence of any breach of UK law and the lack of any credible risk of harm, as opposed to mere offensiveness, the Board has no sustainable grounds on which to refuse a classification to VISIONS OF ECSTASY in 2012.

Therefore the film has been classified for video release at 18 without cuts."

Hopeless film with poor DVD quality. This was advertised as uncut but I couldn't see a single part of the film which would have merited this. The whole thing should've been left on the cutting room floor due to its tedious artistic merits. Don't waste any money on this trash.

choosing the once protested title was of some interest, with the short film of three , it kept me watching from the interesting possibilitys to act apon the real creativity it actually unfolds. not my sort of film.

Another one of the ‘banned’ films to tick off albeit one clocking in at under 20 minutes. The director had obviously seen Ken Russell’s brilliant ‘The Devils’ and decided to take the theme of sexual frenzy amongst the nuns in his film and create his own take on this. Whereas ‘The Devils’ was directed with skill and featured a fully developed narrative in which the scenes of convent hysteria were included to ridicule religious hypocrisy in 17th century France and to examine political domination of the Church, this film presents a few minutes of soft-core porn without context. That’s it: pretentious soft-core dressed up as something more.

The DVD contains the later 72 minute film ‘Sacred Flesh’ that appears to take ‘Visions’ and turn it into a ‘proper film’. Some interesting visuals and pretentious dialogue will only fool the gullible. One scene showing two nuns molesting another who has full porn star facial make-up, body piercing, a tattoo and a ‘Hollywood’ reveal the film for what it is…..

What a bitter disappointment this was. If you want successful art-house porn check out the films of Walerian Borowczyk.

HASH(0x936c7dd0) out of 5 stars Not worth the money (even if it was only a few bucks!) 9 Mar. 2014

Don't waste your money. They really hyped up this film as "revolutionary" due to its explosive experimental content. The truth is, the subject could have been targeted in a more tasteful manner. I'm not an expert in the subject by all means, but I was very intrigued by the intense reviews this film had received, and of course the fact that it had been banned for a couple of decades made it that much more baffling. I was expecting to be blown away by the content, when in reality I ended up watching a really bad porno for a bit over a quarter of an hour, those are 15 minutes my friend and I will never get back. It was really strange, and not in a good way.

Nun exploitation at its very best. More intellectual than most films in this genre, and yet very erotic.

All movies were cut so bad, and they lie about it is unrated, save your money it is not worth it, beside the picture is not clear enough.
