Product Description

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for PlayStation 3 takes the series into a bold new direction, combining the stealth tactics and epic story-telling of Kojima Productions with the adrenalin-fuelled action of PlatinumGames. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the latest thrilling chapter of the ever-expanding Metal Gear saga. Taking place four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, the world of cyborg crimes and terrorism is the perfect place for Raiden to take the lead as he searches for the truth about his past while trying to uphold justice. Raiden is working for Maverick Security, one of several Private Military Companies (or PMCs) that have sprung up in a world where cyborg technology has become commonplace. In the three years since the Patriots system collapsed, peace still remains elusive as cybernetics become a tradable commodity and renegade PMCs prove to be as corrupt as the former Patriots. Desperado Enterprices are one such PMC, and it is their involvement in terrorist activities that spurs Raiden's new tale on. Raiden's story continues to evolve in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. As dedicated Metal Gear fans will know, he was a child soldier who was transformed into a cyborg ninja and equipped with a high-frequency katana blade. But he also carries another weapon - a soul fuelled by revenge. Raiden is playable in both his "White" form, as seen in Guns of the Patriots, and his new, more powerful "Black" cyborg armour. With Raiden a different kind of hero to Solid Snake, so Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a different kind of Metal Gear experience. Some of the key stealth elements remain (including the infmaous cardboard box!) but the focus is on high-energy, high-impact action, with a fast and fluid game style centred on Raiden's katana-based combat. At the heart of this new hack-and-slash action is the new Zan Datsu cut mechanic. This skillful strike will allow you to cut anything, anywhere within

Manufacturer's Description

Players assume control of Raiden, protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and supporting character in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. A key gameplay feature for the game is titled zan-datsu, which involves "cutting" through enemies and "taking" parts from the bodies of dismembered cyborgs and robots. Rising's stealth elements will emphasize Raiden's considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as "hunting stealth." Unlike the "waiting stealth" of previous titles, in which players remained hidden and avoided combat, players in Rising will instead quickly stalk their enemies and use acrobatic maneuvers to stay out of sight while closing in. This ties in with the game's zan-datsu feature, allowing them to prey upon enemies to obtain weapons, items, and energy.

Features:

  • Rising's stealth elements will emphasize Raiden's considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as "hunting stealth."
  • Gameplay will focus on two key elements: swordfighting, and a style of stealth that is more fast-paced and action-oriented.
  • "Cutting" entails sophisticated swordplay that lets players engage in third person melee combat, as well as precisely slash enemies and objects "at will" along a geometrical plane using a "free slicing" mode.

It's a fun game with really solid combat, though the story is a bit silly you can forgive the game because all it wants to do is cut anything it can into little pieces.

There is now a PC release but its textures are not up to scratch given the power of a modern-day computer as consoles use very old technology in computer terms. Nonetheless I would recommend that you get the PC release and then play with a controller as it would provide a better experience (in my view).

There isn't much to say about the story but it is based on Raiden's exploits after the fall of the PMCs and SOP in MGS4, this ties loosely into the story but I feel that the developers just wanted to make Raiden the ultimate cyborg ninja and there is little reference to MGS4. The voice acting is okay if you feel forgiving and the music is really fast-paced and quite brilliant, to add to that it runs really smoothly which improves the experience ten-fold.

For a 'First-Impressions' video I would recommend you search for TotalBiscuit's video on it (on YouTube).

I would highly recommend it to anyone as the game is well-balanced, very enjoyable and it doesn't ever get old cutting things into hundreds of little pieces!

Set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, you step into the cyborg body of Raiden a.k.a. Jack the Ripper. Private military companies (PMCs) are now popping up everywhere, fuelling the war economy at an alarming rate. At the heart of this is the faction known as Desperados, escalating technological warfare into criminal territory. Allied with a peacekeeping unit, Raiden seeks out the Desperados in an attempt to halt their twisted plans for the future of terrorist warfare.

Rising is a spin-off title. As much as you miss Solid Snake you'll have to get over it! Growing out of Snake's shadow is a mammoth task, but Raiden is deserving of a solo outing and in this game proves he has the chops to make a name for himself. The underlying plot is bonkers mad, but would you expect any less from Platinum Games?

Rising is a sharp-looking game from start to finish. Raiden's character model is just as badass as the cyborg's spicy personality. However, it's the lavish designs of the Desperados that are truly eye catching. The detailed battle suits of the rival cyborgs are highly imaginative and showcase the talents of Platinum's art team. Blade Mode is the real talking point here, presenting physics based slicing action via stunning animations.

Level design has been given plenty of attention, helping to incorporate stealth-based and offensive gameplay scenarios. Levels do tend to open up, urging players to venture away from obvious paths and seek out alternate ways to progress.

The highlight of the experience is the dynamic soundtrack during boss battles. Towards battle climax, the vocals for the track kicks in and sends everything into overdrive.

First off, this is a action game, more than that it's a highly un-realistic action game about a cyborg/ninja/samurai who can cut nearly anything in half with a sword because it can apparently vibrate so fast it's heat will near melt anything. If you're buying this game for anything outside of over the top, impossibly crazy sword combat then leave. This isn't the game you want.
Ok so if you're still here I take it you want impossibly crazy sword combat, and let me tell you straight off, this game does that pitch perfect. The combat is deep and articulate, it allows many different styles of attack and it's wide spectrum of seamlessly transitioning moves allow for a fun and natural combat feel, and most of the time, looking above the mark in graphics. The boss-fights were a real highlight in the game, with each having a nicely unique feel in regards to attacks and strategy and each having specific music to set the pace and tone.

It is here that I sadly must say I have run out of nice things to say about this game as the storyline is meagre from start to finish and at times almost contradictory to itself. One level stands out as especially odd, you are about to fight a boss and he berates ( in a very bland and shallow manor ) you for killing all the soldiers that have tried to kill you so far, this barely noticeable and largely hypocritical little slur was apparently enough to send the soldier of fortune protagonist, who had been raised a child soldier in the Liberian civil wars into a emotional slump and it then we the player who have to slowly drag him through a level as he slouches and stumbles along, killing almost all momentum the previous level had caused and making the game feel more like a chore than a...well a game.

I was insanely hyped for "the original" Metal Gear Solid: Rising so when Revengeance was annouced, it was a huge let down for me. I had abolutely no will to play this game but near the launch date i decided to give it a go and i have to say that, even though it's not what really wanted, it's a pretty great game.

In terms of graphics, it's obvious that Platinum Game's engine isn't the best looking around. Kojima Production's "Fox Engine" is clearly stronger but still, the game doesn't look bad by any means and it runs SUPER smoothly. This game offers very fast paced combat that benefits those who take the time to learn how to parry, dodge and perform diferent attack moves throughout it's course. The boss fights are a lot of fun as well and the inclusion of stealth elements (for those who choose to play in that fashion) in most chapters, makes me want to play this game again even more so i can try it with different play styles. The story and the supporting characters aren't exactly strong in terms of quality but when playing Revengeance, that's probably the part you'll care less about any way.

To conclude, this is not a typical MGS game, but it is a great action game with crazy fast combat with some stealth and humorous moments that will remind you of other Metal Gear games making it a serious contender to be the best action game of 2013.
