Product Description

Product Description

Now, New York has a new weapon, a cop with his own way of fighting crime

Jackie Chan heads over Stateside for what was his original 80's crack at the US market in this hard 'n' furious extreme 'Rush Hour' style buddy cop movie.

Reluctantly partnered with redneck cop Danny Aiello (The Godfather: Part II, Leon), the two head over to Hong Kong to avenge the death of Jackie's partner in a brutal orgy of fight mayhem the likes of which Chan has never repeated!

Directed by James Glickenhaus, who brought us the notorious revenge shocker 'The Exterminator', this is a dark, glossy, fight-packed film of deliciously nasty action that's a must-see. Special Features:

- Fully restored and remastered digital transfer
- Super bitrate encoding for optimum visual presentation
- Dolby Digital English 5.1 & 2.0
- Audio Commentary by Andrew Staton

About the Actor

Apprenticed to the China Drama Academy (or "opera school") by his parents at the age of 6, Jackie Chan was rigorously trained in music, dance, and traditional martial arts. A visiting filmmaker offered Chan his first (tiny) role as a stunt player. Chan took the part, and soon left the Opera to pursue the world of film. Fellow Opera students Biao Yuen and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo would also have careers in film, and the three would star in several films together in the following years. Chan's talent and enthusiasm soon saw him taking larger and more important roles, graduating first to stunt coordinator, and then to director. Following the death of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, the search was on for an actor who could inspire audiences to the same degree; every young martial artist was given a chance. Chan decided that rather than emulating Lee (and thus living forever in his shadow), he would develop his own style of filmmaking. His directorial debut Shi di chu ma (1980) was a milestone in martial arts films, being one of the first to effectively combine comedy with action. This set the tone for many of his future films, which combined slapstick humor with high-energy martial arts action. A self-confessed fan of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, Chan performs all his own stunts, quite often at his own peril. His later films include outtakes of his on-set injuries run under the closing credits. He is understandably number one on the insurance blacklist.

The Protector was another failed attempt to launch Jackie Chan as a star in the USA after The Big Brawl/Battle Creek Brawl failed to do the trick, and it's all too easy to see why this was even more unsuccessful. For the most part ignoring Chan's comic and acrobatic abilities, it simply partners him with Danny Aiello and plants him in the middle of a conventional buddy cop movie set in New York and Hong Kong where they get involved in tracking down the kidnapped daughter of a heroin smuggling kingpin. It's not terrible but it's the kind of film that could have starred absolutely anyone in Chan's role, so little use does it make of his talents, while James Glickenhaus' rather workmanlike direction pushes the plot along efficiently enough without it ever really threatening to catch fire. Even one spectacular chase around Kowloon Harbour that should be a highlight turns into a bit of damp squib because of lethargic pacing and editing. It's certainly watchable if you're in an undemanding mood, but it never really pushes the envelope. Still, it did inspire Chan to show how he thought a modern day cop movie should be done with Police Story.

Chan was so displeased with the film that for the Hong Kong version he directed several new scenes and re-edited the film, adding more and much better fight scenes that played to his strengths, losing the odd bit of nudity and throwing in a car chase as well as a new subplot, improving the film no end. Unfortunately, this is not the version that Hong Kong Legends chose to release on this fairly thin disc, which contains the disappointing US version with no deleted or additional scenes (the only extra is an audio commentary by Andrew Staton). It's not a terrible film, but you're much better off tracking down the Hong Kong Region 0 DVD which includes Chan's cut with English subtitles.

First of all let me state from the off that this is NOT a martial arts movie, its more of a stunt filled 80's cop thriller, sure there are several fight scenes in the film and whilst they are not of the frenetic standard seen in Jackie's HK films, for an american movie they are excellent. I remember its release in the uk in the 80's and it was never marketed as a martial arts film either, it was an attempt to give Jackie a tougher, harder edged image and show that there was another aspect to him away from slapstick comedy and martial arts, and this is what I like about the film.

Director James Glickenhaus tackles the storyline in a no nonsense manner, reducing the comedy and protracted fight scenes expected from Jackie and cramming it full of violent bloody gunfights, beatings, swearing and full frontal nudity! Fun for all the family it is not and many of Jackies fans were not happy, they reeled in shock when they heard Jackie utter the F word, several times! they were in horror at the the blood being splattered but they were most offended at the sight of naked ladies! I mean you would think they had never seen a grown woman naked before but then again they probably havent! some people really ought to get a life

The Protector is a hugely enjoyable 80's action epic and there are no visible signs of the behind scenes fighting that supposedly went on, sure Jackie is as mean and moody like we've never seen and who knows maybe it was to do with his dissatisfaction behind the scenes that he looks so moody throughout the film, I think its just good acting though. There is action and stunts aplenty and it is all stylishly shot by cinematographer Mark Irwin with excellent use of of NY and HK locations. The film also has a good score by Ken Thorne.

it is a unique movie that stars Jackie Chan and is a more of an hard urban hitting 80's cop movie. that would be typical rated 18 and kinda has a theme of what real life brings. a real ending no happy or bad ending. i feel as if the role would fit more of a hard hitting action hero like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Steven segal or Vin diseal . few things in the movie didn't make sense like at the end where he was fighting on the crane that was going high up in the air, and he just turned his back and he just kicked him off ! found that a wasteful fight and also why didn't the helicopter just bug off but it come back and even through how he totaled the helicopter you wouldn't expect as you would expect him to climb in the helicopter he still destroyed the helicopter and you could have guessed what was coming as you seen it all before if ur a action fan like me even through back in the 80's i suppose not that many action movies was made compared to what they is now but either way i rate it 4/5.

I am such a massive jackie chan fan and an avid collector of his films but this was the biggest dissapointment I'm afraid.
I think this was Jackie's first attempt at breaking into the American market but this film really doesn't reflect any of JAkies martial arts or creative acrobatic skills (apart from the corner of the wall kick in the brothel) that his films need to hit the box office! I can't believe the poor choreography, which makes Jackie look like a novice most of the times-honestly!!! The last fight scene was almost pathetic!!And Jackie is playing a serious rough cop with none of the usual comedy slapstick etc.
It is a shame because it has a good storyline apart from the cheesy acting in parts. This will not be remembered by his fans as being a significant part of his amazing career.
