Product Description

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and, if he has his way, every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop--except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

From Amazon.co.uk

The turf explored in Gangster Squad may not be entirely accurate to historical truth, but it sure looks like the world of the movie mobster: the basics are instantly recognizable if you've seen L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables. Take a post-World War II Los Angeles, plunge it in noir, drop a ruthless gangster into the mix, and let loose an extralegal squad of cops to break the mob's rule. The crime kingpin in question is Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), and his LAPD adversaries include a detective so square his fedora appears permanently affixed to his skull (Josh Brolin) and a ladies' man (Ryan Gosling) whose dalliance with Cohen's escort (Emma Stone) might not be the best idea for a smooth relationship. Their squad includes stalwart character actors such as Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, and an especially droll Robert Patrick. With all this talent on display, the movie must surely have some bang in its Tommy gun--but alas, director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) has opted for a peculiarly lighthearted, bantering tone for much of the action, which sits oddly with the gun massacres and dismemberments on display. He's also got Sean Penn in full Actor mode, snorting and stamping and wearing his prosthetic nose like a badge of pride. All of which might make for a juicy piece of entertainment, if the film didn't keep tripping over its own clichés and periodically losing its momentum. (Gangster Squad was bumped from its original 2012 opening date after the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater; a shootout scene set in a movie theater was cut and re-shot in a different location for the film's eventual January 2013 release.) --Robert Horton

this is great fun, it isnt the greatest film ever made, the most original or anything like that but it doesnt waste a second and thats the way i like it. Sean Penn is in great form here, it feels like he has been out of my gaze for ages, i always loved him when he is a nasty piece of work as seen in casualties of war and carlitos way and he ups his villainous side once again here. The other actors dont steal a scene from him but they are all great here.
Guns and carnage and sensual beautys are the order of the day and the day is good, get this and look at that price now, £3 wouldnt get you a pint but it will get you a classy film, end of story.

A starry cast heads up this gorgeous looking, forties set gangster flick. A covert group of police officers are put together to bring down the tyranny of Mickey Cohen. Let the action commence.

This was a complete shock. Expecting a drawn out drama with a few action beats it was a surprise when this lit up the screen. Loads of great action set pieces and some great characters to root for this was pure entertainment.

Gangster Squad doesn't have the brains of LA Confidential or the emotional core of The Untouchables but is a helluva lot of fun. Led by Josh Brolin and superbly backed up by Ryan Gosling, he and his band of merry men set about wreaking hell on Cohen's empire. The shoot outs are fast and frenetic and a exhilarating car chase mid way through mixes things up a little.

Sean Penn is Mickey Cohen and he clearly relishes this role. This is the most fun he has had in years and it really shows. Apart from some dodgy prosthetic work, he embodies the pure evilness of this well renowned gangster.

The film is really a three starrer, but four stars are given for the sheer enjoyment it provides. It really shouldn't be this fun but it works entirely. The Gangster Squad are a fantastic bunch of guys and you are with them every step of the way.

Violent, action packed, this is pure entertainment!

This is a fictionalized version of the story of LA gangster Mickey Cohen, excellently portrayed by Sean Penn who looks nothing like him. The action takes place in 1949/1950 and is not shot in black and white. Combat veteran Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) is asked to form a squad of elite men to take down Mickey Cohen, but not as cops, but as a gangsters hitting his places one by one.

John has a pregnant wife (Mireille Enos) who would rather leave town than have her husband take on the mobster. Saddled with the fact it won't happen, she helps her husband assemble a squad which includes Jerry (Ryan Gosling) a playboy cop who is seeing Mickey's girlfriend (Emma Stone). Emma Stone has played too many down to earth women to pull off a swanky mobster girl. She looked like a kid who was playing in her mommy's make-up box. Perhaps that was the genius of the film as she was to suppose to be a small town girl out of place.

Jerry uses a pick up line from 1941 comedy "Hold That Ghost" when he talks about playing post office. Again, was this bad writing or would have someone used a line from a film? At times the characters acted like they came out of "Sin City," stereotypes of themselves. Where do they get all these new Packards to shoot up?

The film had some good lines such as Sean Penn: "All good things must one day be burnt to the ground for insurance money." There is enough humor in the film to keep it from becoming dry.

Now the bad news is that Mickey Cohen was actually brought down by the IRS and not the gangster squad. His girlfriend Liz (not Grace)did three years because she wouldn't testify against him. So as far as facts go, rate this well below an Oliver Stone film. I liked the film, but not because there was any truth to it.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex. Stripper with large pasties.

In 1949 Los Angeles, gangster Micky Cohen (Penn) is on the verge of taking over the entire West coast of America. With the head's of law enforcement & judiciary on his payroll, no one dare step in his way. However, one man that wont sell his office, is Police Chief Parker (Nolte), who has had enough of Cohen's reign, and enlists like minded stand out Homicide detective & ex-elite solider Sgt. John O'Mara (Brolin), to form a squad of 4 or 5 men, leave they're badges at home & wreck havoc on Cohen's industry to bring him to his knees. They are, The Gangster Squad.

This offering will be a familiar story to some, it's essentially a re-touchable i guess you'd call it, of the 1987 film The Untouchables. Moved from the prohibition era of the 1920's-30's to the eve of that classic ring a ding ding 50's era America. It introduces us to the key players early on in the first 30 minutes or so. Sean Penn (Mystic River) with heavy facial prosthetic's as the ex-boxer turned gangster, who if you thought De Nero's intro. was sadistic in the Untouchables as Al Capone, goes the whole 9 yards with an extremely gruesome scene. While Josh Brolin's (The Goonies) honorable cop whose sense of righteousness wont allow him to sit idly by & watch injustice being done no matter the cost. Both sport blood spattered intros. that set the tone for the whole film.

The rest of the squad, interestingly hand picked by Mr's O'Mara (Mireille Enos-
