Featuring some of the best action sequences ever filmed in Hong Kong action cinema, this is one of Jet Li's finest films and the best film in the Once Upon a Time in China series. I remember seeing bits of this film on television back the late 1990s on Channel 4. I wanted to see the film again but it has not been on television since. Recently I bought this from Amazon and saw the film in its entirety for the first time. I was blown away by its breathtaking fight scenes especially the climatic ladder fight scene. Yuen Biao also appears in a supporting role and gets to show his amazing acrobatic skills. I only wish he was in the film more as I felt he was underused.

Fans of Jet Li's American work like Romeo Must Die and Kiss of the Dragon should see what Hong Kong action cinema can do as this is 100 times better than any of Li's american films.

A fine showcase for Jet LI’s impressive martial skills but rather a feeble, elliptical and impressionistic drama that fails to engage the emotions as it should because of weak characterization. The implicit romance, especially, never really goes anywhere much and the rather broad and unsophisticated humor is not successfully integrated into the drama as a whole.

What is far more expressive is the argument against the foreign colonialism of China in the nineteenth-century by both England and the United States. The Mafia-rackets' mentality of such colonists is usefully compared with the local Triad criminal gangs whose goals and aims are identical with that of the foreigners: Wealth creation without too much effort. This extends to the cultural colonialism of Chinese people speaking English and wearing Western-style clothes, along with the resultant fear that not only are ones physical resources being stolen but ones very culture.

Not as good as Jing wu ying xiong (Fist of Legend).

Video quality is excellent - you will see details you did not see in the DVD version. Audio is weak, but then again, the DVD version was the same. There are not as many subtitles as in the DVD version.

Note: Encoded for playback in the US. This was not obvious from the product's description.

Jet Li is really in a class of his own in the martial arts genre. Tsui Hark manages to combine amazing martial arts sequences with balletic grace and incredible power and speed with humour as well. Very good supporting cast in an excellent action film!
