Product Description

Chinese disaster film based on events surrounding the 1976 earthquake in Tangshan, which took the lives of 240,000 people. In the aftermath of the devastating quake, a widowed seamstress (Xu Fan) must choose which of her brother-and-sister twins will be saved after rescuers find them pinned down by a single concrete block. She chooses her son, Fang Dan (Chen Li), unaware that her daughter Fang Deng (Jingchu Zhang) has in fact also survived the ordeal. The film then follows the divergent lives of the two siblings from this point until their eventual reunion in the Sichuan earthquake of 2008.

Aftershock isn't so much a big disaster movie but its about dealing with the fallout of what happens after to a family of four whom after the mum is placed in an absolutely awful situation is made to split her family apart. What follows is a heart wrenching tale of how a family that's been spread apart can never really move on from that fateful Earthquake and how broken all the characters are and it takes place over a thirty year period. Beautifully acted, well written and although there's some confusing scenes in places, its a lavishly produced film that had me glued to the screen the entire time. Epic.

Great Movie it also beats a lot of Western Movies,it will leave something with you after watching,Aftershock is more about the personal fallout of the characters rather than actual seismic vibrations,showing tha consequencies and results of peoples actions.

Aftershock has good acting,is written pretty well for the most part,some great scenes,based on the Tangshan earthquake disaster in 1976,If you're looking for never ending Crumbling,noisey earth temors & aftershocks,then maybe this movie is not for you (you may like the earlier part of film though).

This Movie is more of an emotional & at times a heartbreaking tale of life for many years after the Earthquake,it is an excellent film that i would recommend for the people & family story alone,though some of the cinematography is excellant too, the shorter(by western standards)earthquake scenes in the earlier part of this movie are very good,without being over the top,which would have render them as unreal & useless in this great story.

I purchased this movie solely on the Amazon reviews. What a great decision that was. This movie is outstanding.
To me the title refers not only to the earthquake but to the affect the earthquake had on a family for the next 30 years.

You have to take a few leaps of faith during the movie but to have put everything in this story would have made it just too long.

The special effects are terrific. The acting is very good. The DVD quality is excellent. The storyline is easy to follow - even with the few leaps of faith. What more could you want from a movie?

Buy this - you will not be sorry.

The cover labels this as "A turbo charged blockbuster epic...", but don't let this fool you into thinking it's 2 hours of action scenes - this is drama which is heartbreaking.

Yes, the effects at the initial point of the film are pretty breathtaking. What follows is a story following the lives of a family split apart by the Tangshan earthquake in 1976 and spans 30 odd years of their separation. The acting is superb, it is wonderfully written and beautifully filmed, and the accompanying music score adds to the emotion entirely.

Absolutely wonderful, and I imagine anyone seeing this film would feel compelled to find out for themselves exactly what happened in China at the time. Well worth a viewing, and get ready to shed a tear or two.

I had no pre conceived ideas about this film before watching it and so was pleasantly surprised at being gripped by the film from the start. If you don't like subtitles then DON'T buy it but I never mind them. I think dubbing ruins a film (eg Das Boot dubbed was awful). The special effects at the start of the film are amazing and the story lines after these effects are both believable and extremely moving.

The characters are well crafted and you really do start to feel empathy for all of them. I also found it a fascinating insight into Chinese culture and how it has changed over the long duration the film is set. The only part that was very badly acted and laughable was the part played by the Canadian husband of the main female protagonist. This actor should take up a career in anything other than acting! Thankfully his part is brief and inconsequential to the plot line.

THIS FILM HAS SUBTITLES!!!! There thats out in the open now for all the numpties who can't cope with subtitles.

Now onto the film. This an emotional rollercoaster and for anyone who has kids try and put yourself in the situation of the mother in this movie. This is based on a true story too. Great action scenes at the beginning but after that its one hell of an emotional heartbreaker. Im male and only on the odd occasion has a movie moved me to tears but this movie did it in 4 or 5 places. My wife who is not really into movies at all was absolutely glued to this. At the end of the movie i was struggling to stop the tears and was embarrassed to turn round to my wife and ask her what she thought of it. After a few minutes of trying to wipe my eyes so she wouldnt notice i had been crying i eventually turned round only to see her in floods of tears too. I won't spoil the story here but if you're a parent this will emotionally tear your heart apart. Has to be the most moving film i've ever seen. Would give it 10 stars if i could.

This film will leave a mark on you, its a very human and emotional story that never lets go. Apart from a few editing issues at the end its simply perfect, i recommend it to anyone that has a heart. A must see at the very least!
