'80s slasher fans only familiar with the products of the more common American and Canadian films of the period are in for a real treat and a glimpse of life in jolly old England, circa Christmas time, in "Don't Open till Christmas." Yet St. Nick is not quite as jolly this year, as an unknown psycho apparently experiencing the seasonal doldrums is penchant on decking the halls with blood and dispatching any and all Father Christmas (or Santa Claus for North American readers) impersonators in London. None are safe from the wrath of this killer. It's up to a proper Scotland Yard detective (played by the film's director and veteran British actor, Edmund Purdom) to track him down before all such Clauses are butchered.

"Don't Open till Christmas" was released by Dick Randall and Steve Minasian's Spectacular International Films in December of 1984, and as a historical note, incidentally was playing at the very same time as another noted and highly controversial slasher from across the pond, "Silent Night, Deadly Night." To my knowledge though, there wasn't the same uproar from outraged mothers over "Don't Open till Christmas," as it is far more quaint and refined, much like the British themselves, than its said American cinematic equivalent.

That's not to say there is no sleaze to behold here -- this is a low budget slasher film, after all. Both Randall and Minasian were already well acquainted with the form. Randall had worked on such transcontinental early '80s bloodletters as "Pieces" and Minasian was actually one of the producers of the original "Friday the 13th" (1980).

Dick Randall...ahh the very name for grade z nonsense..Pieces - genius and then this. First encountered at Xmas time when I was about 15, I loved it (the video shop proprietor even gave me his 3D card standee promo and poster too)...alas it was heavily cut. I then came across the US vhs which was apparently uncut (well it was far bloodier than before). Now into the digital age Ifirst got hold of the 'uncut' dDVD, which was anything but (not much cut but still CUT) Thankfully Mondo Macabro have released this beauty...cheapo gore, poor acting and no script!
I have heard out of the many discs out there some have had sequences re-ordered, trims to different scenes and even slight extensions to sequences.
I'm happy with this no matter what, so happy Xmas all round

A British slasher in the mid 80s is quite a rare thing when America were churning out seemingly thousands every other year but in Don't Open Till Christmas here it is. Let's get the stocking fillers out of the way first: the acting is borderline awful, though you've probably seen worse. The editing is choppy and there are several scenes where overdubs have clearly been used as we hear dialogue without lip movement. This can only be forgiven if said actors are great ventriloquists, which i guess their not. Why exactly was Caroline Munro used? Just to fit her into a movie that she doesn't fit into? Onto the good stuff, the story flows well and doesn't out stay its welcome. There are some brilliant location shots of London in the 80s and for someone who grew up in London at this time, this footage is gold. As a slasher movie it delivers too- 4 kills in the first ten minutes ain't too bad. There are some gory kills too. Plot is about mad masked killer going around London killing anyone that's dressed up in a Santa suit. There's an extended well thought out scene at the London Dungeon too. Overall a very good slasher movie. Extras are gold again, with docs and behind the scenes footage very candid I must say. This movie should definetly be in every slasher collection.

I only discovered this film because of my love of The London Dungeon and while researching the old Dungeon site, I stumbled on a trailer for this film as there's a segment that was filmed in there. So, I just had to order this film and give it a watch. I'll be honest and say that I wasn't expecting much at all. I'm quite a fan of slasher films and the fact that I'd never heard of this one before didn't inspire confidence, but I'm happy to say that this is quite a hidden gem!

The story is bonkers and the acting is what you'd expect, but everything moves along at a solid pace and all makes sense. The London Dungeon scene is pleasingly long too and even if I wasn't a fan of the place, it would be my highlight of the film because of it's spooky, stalky overtones.

A film that I can highly recommend to any slasher fan and will from now on, be a part of my Christmas viewing schedule!
