The 1965 B-movie The Night Caller (also known by its alternative US titles, Night Caller from Outer Space and the less subtle, and much less accurate, Blood Beast from Outer Space) starts out as a typically British sci-fi / horror flick in the vein of The Quatermass Xperiment before, about forty minutes in, going off in a direction so unbelievably daft, it is amazing the actors taking part were able to keep straight faces whilst shooting the film. Scientists John Saxon, Maurice Denham, and Patricia Haines track what they think is a comet down to earth, only to discover it was actually a matter-vessel transporting an alien being. Named Medra and apparently hailing from Ganymede, Jupiter's third moon, he's eight feet tall, has hands like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, talks in polite Home Counties RP, and looks like Peter Sutcliffe after he's sampled one of Dr. Jekyll's cocktails. On a mission to abduct human females and return with them to his home world, the method by which the fearsome Medra goes about `recruiting' these women is truly ludicrous, with him advertising for hopeful models in the pages of 'Bikini Girl' magazine!
The Night Caller's director, John Gilling, was responsible for a couple of the better horror movies of British cinema's mid-1950s to mid-1970s boom period, films like The Flesh and The Fiends (1959) and Hammer's The Plague of the Zombies (1966), and his work on this less well-known effort is similarly solid; Jim O' Connolly's script has a few witty flourishes, and whilst the imported American Saxon (Enter the Dragon) is a slightly incongruous lead, we do get great performances from the rest of the cast, particularly Haines, Alfred Burke as a copper on the case, and especially The Wicker Man's Aubrey Morris, gloriously seedy as a porn-peddling Soho scumbag.

'RENOWN'S' COLOURFUL RESTORATION raises a Black & White 'B' out of obscurity for a new audience! As someone who loves colourised movies this is a treat. Just marvel at the military vehicles, the uniforms, the green vegetation, and the OVERWHELMING addition of colour to the London scenes. Flesh tones leave a little to be desired, and surely the news flash on the portable TV should have remained in black and white, but these are minor quibbles. Colourisation is ideal for revitalising old movies and is one of the digital age's great innovations. Anyone not totally convinced should see Renown's restoration in COLOUR of The Pickwick Papers or the colourised version of Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby. I defy anyone not to be totally impressed!
As for the story of Night Caller - it may have a few loopholes but the dialogue is well written and convincingly carried, particularly by Alfred Burke who adds a convincing serious tone to the movie and in my opinion should be the top name on the DVD sleeve, where, strangely enough, his name is omitted completely.
I have only one serious criticism of the DVD presentation, which has lost it a 'star' - the movie clearly appears to be originated on a format wider than 4:3, there are numerous scenes when characters to the left and right of the picture are barely visible. Should the DVD presentation have been closer to 16:9? If so why was the full image was presented?
Regardless however, I enjoyed this intriguing and COLOURFUL resurrection. Well done RENOWN - let's have some more!

Having seen the B&W version, I guess i was expecting too much, the colours were just like the colour version of A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version yuk) I was surprised the DVD contained the B&W version, so i watched this first, then the colour one, i only managed about 5 minutes, i could not watch it any longer, but i am glad it had the B&W version as this is the best.

An enjoyable small scale British sci fi that is a good example of what can be done on a low budget when you use a bit of thought. I first saw "The Night Caller" in the seventies on one of those Sunday double bills of golden oldies we used to get at British cinemas. The film has a surprisingly intelligent script and is peopled by a host of familiar British actors. Special effects are extremely sparse but the film builds suspense effectively. Also the opening theme music "Image" was also heard on radio stations back in the sixties. The intentions of the visiting alien are dubious, killing a few people and then giving a philosophical speech at the end. I also forgot that you do get a look at his face at the end, one side human the other disfigured. A cheap and cheerful sci fi but one that is worth a watch.

I like these silly sci-fi movies. This is one of my favourites.
The stars are mostly well known. John Saxon looks as if he is just out of school.
Warren Mitchell is featured and does a quite funny double act with his screen wife.
I was not impressed with the colour version. At times the colours looked very washed out and false.
Still the disc does have the black and white version as well, so no complaints.
The space being has a hand that is so obviously a rubber glove.
These comments are not complaints, this is the sort of thing you expect with these movies and I think they are amusing for that.
All great fun.
