Disturbingly real tale of murder made so effective by the documentary-esque cinematography and genuine acting performances, particularly by Michael Rooker who is phenomenal. The opening few minutes will live in the memory forever with stark depictions of murder victims setting the tone for a thoroughly horrifying film. You really do feel as though you are being privy to real events rather than a simulation as is the intensity. The picture quality isn't great but that only adds to the character. I think only the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film has had the same impact in this genre.

This is one of the best movie ever about a serial killer. Michael Rooker is absolutely perfect, along with the other actors of the film. It is realistic, really frightening, but with some humor from time to time. But it can also be really violent...be careful. This is the first and only time that I see a serial-killer as they are always described by people whom were their neighbors or friends : normal, common people. Henry is never crazy, hysterical, like you see the serial-killer in "Silence of the lambs" and so many movies. He is just calm, peaceful, even gentle, and that makes him even more frightening. Also, the movie is filmed with sobriety, and you could think that is an author movie, like Ken Loach was behind the camera...
I certainly recommend this one to everybody, from the author-movie fan to the horror-movie fans.

SYNOPSIS

Very loosely based on real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER follows Henry randomly killing people. He later introduces his roommate Otis (omitting one "t" for the film version) to the killing sprees. The two even videotape some of the murders with a video camera for their home viewing pleasure... (needless to say the BBFC was NOT amused)

THE PROS & CONS

HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER is one of the most effective and certainly best serial killer movies out there. The film is very loosely based on real life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.
The film was shot in 1985 on 16mm in only 28 days with a budget of $110,000. It grossed $600,000 on its limited theatrical run. McNaughton retained the names of the original serial killers and based the film on some of the men's interviews, but overall the film is a work of fiction.
HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER is certainly one of the most controversial films of the 80s, and definitely one of the best films of that decade.
Director John McNaughton (WILD THINGS) delivered a masterpiece of filmmaking here with an incredibly low budget, managing to focus on what is important: the characters and their psychology. Henry and Otis appear as normal people, your average common next door neighbors, albeit with a dark secret. They don't wear hockey or Halloween masks.Read more ›
