Loved this movie. I'm very open-minded about the films I watch and personally enjoy films that are more transgressive and "outside the box". Subconscious Cruelty certainly fits that description.

A film that is at times beautiful and uplifting,and at others dark and unsettling, it always remains engaging and held me almost transfixed throughout. It raises questions on many important themes and delves deep into the darkest corners of the mind to present some fairly jarring imagery. However, I don't think for one second that this is a film designed only to shock, it's FAR more intellectual than some would have you believe, with much questioning of the human condition and the hypocrisy of religion.

Religion is a topic that the director feels very strongly about it seems, as there's quite a bit of anger and cynicism displayed in the movie. I myself am not deeply religious, but still found some of the imagery pretty unpleasant. That being said, I also recognise that religion has a lot to answer for in this world, war, violence, sexual discrimination, enough to justify this kind of resentment, as it's very clear that the director is trying to make a mockery of the entire notion of faith (and even the creation of life in the "Human Larvae" story). This is something which doesn't exactly sit comfortably with me (even as an agnostic), but it doesn't mean I judge the man whatsoever, as religion could have affected his life in a very negative way and would justify his wanting to anger and outrage religious people.

The film does have quite a strong degree of pessimism running throughout, with a focus on the more negative and destructive sides of the human being, but I found beauty in a lot of the imagery also.Read more ›

If you like arthouse cinema and you like taboo subject matters drenched in twisted gore then this is the one to purchase. The acting is very strong for this type of flick and the camera techniques throughout are never short of impressive. It's been scored with an industrial sound which intensifies the stark images of depravity and enhances the tensions within any absorbed viewer.

We start with a disheveled lecher's infactuation with his pregnant sister which culminates in acts of incestuous necrophilia and infanticide - this section was very grim and i strongly advise all expectant mothers to avoid at all costs. The whole experience is superbly narrated by the lead actor in a warped, poetic style whilst indulging himself in acts of masturbation.

Then, we have a change of pace with a group of naked tree-hugger types dancing around vast vegetation with a couple copulating with the earth followed by pools of blood emerging from the soil. Personally, i couldn't work out what message this scene was trying to send to the viewer: Was it promoting love for mother nature; or, was it depicting the rape of mother earth? Maybe it was both? Despite the importance of this intended, yet slightly confusing message, this part of the flick was just too wierd for me and dare i say a little tedious.

The grand finale was undoubtedly the most shocking and due to the highly sensitive acts of blasphemy shown, i'm inclined not to divulge any information which may be deemed inappropriate by Amazon or any potential readers. The only fact i'm willing to disclose is: If you're religious in any way, shape or form, you will be deeply offended by the images and the overall message that this whole section uncompromisingly delivers.

This is a very striking flick and highly recommended for viewers who want/like to be shocked.

This is truly a great film. Yes, it is not for everyone and the material is as controversial as it comes. But the film is beautifully shot, with an amazing soundtrack. Probably one of the most disturbing, yet beautiful films ever made.

I loved this film a lot. I also love Jodorowsky, Tetsuo, Begotten and that kind of stuff, so if you love that too, give this a chance. It's a film full of excesses, but that is not the reason I love it. What I like most is that this film contains a lot of sequences of short rational unrelated images, that evoke strong emotions.
It's like poetry, where words are used in new ways. This is cinamatic poetry, where images are used in a new way.
It contains four little stories, and then I use the word story in a very loose way. It's more like cinematographic dreams. It combines sex, extreme violence and religion, that highpoints in a finale that, however I don't believe in Christ, gave me the feeling that I was after watching this not longer welcome in heaven.
My favourite part is the third, where naked people kind of make love with the earth and nature, and making it bleed. Why? That doesn't interest me. This film is not for understanding, but to make contact with the hidden world behind your ratio. This film is very strong in that, and that's why I love it. I don't like films you have to understand. I like it when a film destroys my logic. I like films you have to feel. I see this as giving freedom to the soul, while your body has not to die in the proces.
Every part builds to an image that makes your subconsiousness jump. Don't look the trailler, because it gives away these images. My first looking of this film was half spoilt by the product description amazon gave, where they give away the final images of the first two stories. This film works best as you know so little as possible about it. On the other hand: This film has to be found by a group of people with a, let's say, different taste.
