Product Description

Product Description

A tough detective, nickname Cobra (Sylvester Stallone), is assigned to protect a beautiful model (Brigitte Nielsen), the only witness to a series of brutal murders. It transpires that the killings are not the work of one lone psychopath, but rather a highly organised army of neo-fascists.

Synopsis

Like Sylvester Stallone's Rocky and Rambo, the hero of Cobra is another original: Lt. Marion Cobretti, a one-man assault force whose laser-mount submachine gun and pearl-handled Colt .45 spit pure crimestopping venom. Director George P. Cosmatos (Rambo: First Blood Part II, Tombstone) rejoins Stallone for this thriller pitting Cobretti against a merciless serial killer. The trail leads to not one murderer but to an army of psychos bent on slashing their way to a "New Order" – and killing the inadvertent witness (Brigitte Nielsen) to their latest blood spree. Fortunately, Cobra is her protector. And full-throttle screen excitement doesn't get any better

Cobra is a classic slice of typical 80s action. Its cheesy, has a thin plot, plenty of macho cringeworthy moments, but despite this, the movie works.

There is no doubt that Stallone has charisma, thats what made him such a star in Hollywood, and he works on that to a treat here. Fans of his work will be delighted in that sense.

Stallone is backed up well too. We have Andrew Robinson and Reni Santoni as part of the law enforcement group- both are very good actors, and interestingly both starred in the classic Dirty Harry 15 years earlier.

The biggest surprise for me was Brigitte Nielsen, who as a baddie was a disaster in the ill fated Beverly Hills Cop 2. But here, as a woman on the run from a manic serial killer, she really impresses.

The script which was written by Stallone is poor indeed, that is the big let down here, but again the decent actors make the most of it. I'm sure at some points they may have improvised.

The direction is top notch, and it was a shrewd idea, possibly by Stallone to bring in George P Cosmatos who Stallone had previously worked with on Rambo 2.

A worthy note should also be aimed at the killer himself played by Brian Thompson who is mostly mute here, just adding even more of a sense of horror about his character.

And oh how inncocent the 80s were. There is an early supermarket showdown piece that has plenty of advertising for Pepsi. But in that scene Stallone decides to swig from a beer instead, also at the end Coke is advertised and drank. Its a small note, but that would NEVER happen in a film of today.

All in all if you like plain old dumbed down at times and cheesy action movies of this era, you should love Cobra- there is plenty of machine guns, deaths (though not graphic) and lots of car chases, its a hoot, all be it a guilty one.

Finally, the full version of this classic action-flick. Since the mid-80s all UK-realeases were missing one sentence during the final showdown. Fortunately for all fans, by now the BBFC have given a green light to the full version which is contained on the BD.

"You're a disease and I'm the cure" snarls Sylvester Stallone in a gravely whisper while dressed like a gun-toting gay strippergram in Cobra, one of the campest and worst looking films of the 80s, and that's saying quite something for the star of Rocky IV. Kicking off with a gun pointed at the audience while Stallone lispths his way through a catalogue of daily "wape and wobbewe" statistics and including much speachifying about BS rules and the judges being on the criminals' side and no shortage of scenes of the evil medya and liberal detectives out to crucify its misunderstood killing machine with a badge, it's a poor man's Dirty Harry that looks more like a cheap Cannon straight-to-video film than a major studio release. Although Cannon godfathers Golan and Globus have producers credits on the film, they had no involvement beyond lending the studio the star, who was then under contract to them.) Marion Cobretti is the kind of cop who drives a classic car, slices pizza with scissors, has a giant photo of Ronald Reagan in his office and has a ready supply of one liners for every psychopath: when one threatens to blow up a supermarket, he simply replies "I don't shop here" before blowing him away. But most of the film sees him protecting the then-Mrs Stallone, Brigitte Nielson in a bad blonde wig and the kind of makeup that makes her look like an inflatable woman, who is being stalked by a cult of poorly defined serial killers dreaming of a New World order of hunters culling the weak.Read more ›

Here are the 10 main reasons why I absolutely love Sly Stallone's Cobra:

1. It's the darkest of Sly's movies, with great atmosphere of dark and hostile city.
2. It's directed by George P. Cosmatos, so you know action scenes are going to be totally unrealistic and totally awesome.
3. It has this unique 80s vibe you won't find in modern movies.
4. It's definitely NOT a movie for kiddies - the thing I can't say about 90% of modern films.
5. The music in it is absolutely awesome.
6. It's stupid, but not in an insulting way (for that, go and see: Transformers 1 & 2, the Hitchhiker remake, almost every single modern action movie).
7. Bridget Nielsen!
8. It has it's own style and it's nothing like other 80s action movies - it's like a crossover of The Terminator, Se7en and Rambo.
9. Has an EPIC climax.
10. It's FUN!

1986 Action Classic! And one of Sly's most underrated movies, that deserved a sequel!
Simple plot, maverick cop Marion Cobretti (Stallone) is assigned to protect a beautiful female witness from a cult of Neo-Nazi style supremacist bikers who are terrorising Los Angeles with a spate of brutal murders - You get it all here; a scene reminiscent of Halloween 2 , where the cult leader (a monster of a man known as The Night Slasher) goes on a Michael Myers style killing spree at the City's hospital, plenty of bloody shootouts and fights and a couple of superb Car & Bike chases that are second only to the Mad Max movies, in terms of violence and spectacle. Really, really good stunt work and special effects! Also, there's lots of firearms, including Cobretti's hi-tech, laser sighted Jatimatic submachinegun, well deployed throughout the many chases and firefights!
All this is tightly directed (George P Cosmatos, Rambo 2), and sharply edited, with decent cinematography. Performances are fine for an action film, and this is very much a product of the late 80's in it's flashy lighting, camera angles and garish violence.
I would definiteley shortlist this as one of the definitive 1980's action movies!
Quite a decent AOR soundtrack too!
There's elements of Slasher movies, Dirty Harry style cop movies and a strong feel of the Mad Max/Road Warrior genre in the stunning car chases and biker atacks.
For fans of Mad Max 1&2, Stone Cold, The Terminator and the Lethal Weapon series...
