There's something about Golden Swallow the swordswoman. She has two swordsmen vying for her affections, both with very different wooing techniques. One becomes her best friend, nursing her back to health after a fight and the other, opting for the less subtle, age old dating method of ruthlessly slaughtering gangs of bandits, while leaving Swallow's personalised replica throwing darts scattered about, in the hope it'll make her cross enough to flush her out of hiding. Which is not so much softly softly catchy monkey, as it is throwing grenades under a tree to see what falls out... Anyway The bandits get annoyed at this, people get attacked with swords, heroism is inevitable...

Chang Cheh directs this martial artsy, fantasy drama, which is a follow up to Come Drink With Me ('66), with the action choreography of Lau Kar Leung. The actors we're given are Pei Pei (reprising her role as Golden Swallow), Lo Lieh and the somewhat petulant Jimmy Wang Yu as Silver Roc.
This looks very nice, with some lovely camera work and settings (filmed in Japan) and at times I almost felt like turning the garish colours down on my tele to make it look black and white and somehow more timeless.
The characters are mostly unlikeable (with the exception of Lo Lieh) but thankfully spend most of the run time, slashing their way through hundreds of bandits or exiting through windows, Superman style; before the expected love triangle, duel ending between Jimmy Wang Yu and Lo Lieh.
The dialogue is as dated as the tale itself, but you kinda go with it and the finale is rousing enough.
There's plenty of bloody violence and fans of heroic sword play should equally enjoy this, alongside the romantic art house crowd.

A hoot from the days of Kung Foolery on the big screen. Wang Yu & Cheng Pei Pei, lark about in Chang Cheuh's Golden Swallow. Wang Yu as a two armed version of his best incantation of 'The One armed swordsman'.
The plot as it is, revolves around a female swordsman, & her fascination with Wang Yu's character, at the expense of her love lorn suitor.
However, its got all of the hallmarks of Chang Cheuh's handywork stamped all over it. Plenty of blood flying around! That's why as a teenagers, we loved them.
As an adult & a Martial artist, the fighting scenes are completely barking mad, but that's the charm of these Shaw Brothers epics, alongside the hilarious dialogue.
I remembered my open mouthed disbelief, of first seeing men flying through the air engaged (all be it on wires) in hand to hand combat, & wondering why don't the Chinese win the Olympic high, & long jumps on a continuous basis.
The arguments among my compatriots as to the absolute truth of it, it all came rushing back.
Great times!

I've purchase this DVD because I watched this film when I was about 12 years old in Vietnam. The DVD arrived in very good condition as they said and the quality is good. Except 1 or 2 missing scence in the film and the first 7 minutes of the film was dark (hardly seen at all & jumpy)...I don't know because of the DVD bad or they made it the way it is, otherwise if you knew and like the famous actors and actress in the movie (Wang Yu, Cheng Pei Pei, Lo Leih) like me then it's a good collection for your Chinese movie.

How the hell did they get the name The Girl with the Thunderbolt Kick for this movie? She uses daggers... anyway, this is Golden Swallow, the sequel to Come Drink With Me, and it's better in almost every way. This time Chang Cheh directs and he makes it much darker than the original. And they added Lo Lieh and Yu Wang to the cast! I've had problems with Lo Lieh being a hero before, since he's such a great villain, but he was quite convincing this time. He is a good friend to the title character, played by the amazing Cheng Pei-pei, though this sequel is less about Golden Swallow and more about an old acquaintance of hers: Silver Roc, played by Yu Wang. He is a rather relentless vigilante who kills in the name of Golden Swallow just to get her attention: see he's still rather obsessed with her. Cheng Pei-pei is a much better action performer in this film than she was in the first and has some great moments, but this is Yu Wang's movie and he lays waste to all sorts of villainous types from beginning to end.

An older movie that still packs a punch. Wang Yu is fabulous. The sword play is grand and the special effects are realistic. I loved this movie.
