Product Description

Product Description

Seaman Johnny Drake (Dennis Hopper), on shore leave, finds a "Mermaid" sideshow attraction at the marina, operated by Captain Murdock (Gavin Muir). The "Mermaid" Mora (Linda Lawson), who lives in a hotel above the marina merry-go-round (the movie was filmed at the Santa Monica pier) and Johnny fall for each other. Everyone around them is wary of the romance, as her previous lovers have died mysteriously. Filmed in an interesting era for independent cinema in Los Angeles, beginning with John Parker's Dementia (1955), director Curtis Harrington was influenced by Edgar Allen Poe, making use of Arcane overtones, murder and mystery, all are at play in this work of screen art. Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, 1969) displays his early genius and intensity, touched with a gritty naïveté'. Shot against the backdrop and landscape of 1950's LA Noir. Thanks to the diligence of Roger Corman this film has been preserved and digitally remeastered from a new 35mm print for posterity and this is it's first UK release.

****THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE KINO BLU-RAY RELEASE********

Dennis Hopper plays a sailor on shore leave hanging around the side shows and bars on Venice Beach looking for a good time. In a jazz club he meets a mysterious young woman who works on a carny side show as a mermaid. Hopper's character becomes quickly infatuated with the woman and they strike up a relationship. It's not long before he begins hearing some sinister rumors about the young woman and discovers that she may in fact be a real mermaid.

Made independently in 1960 (released 1961) This is Curtis Harrington's debut feature length film. Having previously made a series of short films he used these to help persuade Dennis Hopper, fresh from starring in GIANT with James Dean, to appear. The film is shot in Black and white and looks marvelous. The Venice Beach location and the great score give the film a real haunted and otherworldly atmosphere and it deserves it's comparisons to Carnival of souls and Lemora: A child's tale of the supernatural.

Kino's Blu-ray release is totally region free. It runs on my PS3 without any issues. While there is some evident print damage the film still looks fantastic given it's age and pedigree. There's an interesting and informative audio commentary from Hopper and Harrington and two interviews with the director.

Overall its a great package for an interesting and well made film.
