Basket case has always been one of my favourite films. In fact I even created a website for it!

I really don't want to spoil the story for anyone who has yet to watch it and I'm sure anyone who has seen it doesn't need reminding what happens.

If you like your films high budget and riddled with CGI you probably aren't going to enjoy this film.

Somehow this film missed the Video Nasty list when first released, but that is probably because it was so far fetched and while gory has a element of fun to the story. Shot in and around the boroughs of New York (Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn) on a miniscule budget by Frank Henenlotter the film has a wonderful grimy atmosphere throughout.

The Blu Ray Transfer itself is an improvement on the DVD and for a 16mm film is about as good as you can expect. The extras are limited to what we have seen before bar an introduction from Frank Henenlotter.

5 stars from a very happy Fan::-)

Basket Case has a great story, sadly the execution doesn't quite match it and it falls just short of being a genuine classic. Duane is a young innocent looking man with a Brian May haircut who arrives in New York, we meet him as he's paying for a rented room in a sleazy hotel. He's carrying around a large basket that he claims contains his clothes, but what's really in the basket is his brother, Belial. As we find out through flashbacks, Belial was Duane's siamese twin and their mother died giving birth to them, Belial is deformed and only has a head and upper torso with arms, he's so deformed that he doesn't even appear human.

After years of disgust and anger over his wife's death, Duane's father pays three doctors to remove Belial illegally. Belial survives the procedure and is very angry about being seperated from his brother, years later and the pair of them are in New York looking for the doctors that separated them. Whilst they're searching for the doctors, Duane meets a woman named Sharon. For the first time in his life he senses he could be happy, but if Belial can't be happy then why should Duane?

Sounds amazing right? Well not quite. The acting in Basket Case is truly abysmal, the special effects (especially Belial) are even worse. The picture and sound quality is mediocre, and the whole thing feels shockingly dated. Yet somehow despite all the bad things, the film manages to be hugely entertaining. The acting and effects as bad as they are, actually adds to the film's charm and it's probably the reason it's gained such a loyal fan base and cult status. Credit has to go to director Frank Henenlotter for making such an entertaining film, he only had a $35,000 budget.

Basket Case is a B-movie from 1982, written and directed by Frank Henenlotter (Frankenhooker) and starring Kevin Van Hentenryck and Beverly Bonner. Henenlotter directed two sequels, Basket Case 2 (1990) and Basket Case 3: The Progeny (1991), both starring Hentenryck.

Duane Bradley and his deformed Siamese twin, Belial, are separated at birth by three surgeons. Duane's father agrees to the operation after his wife dies giving birth to the twins: he blames her death on Belial, regarding the small and disfigured twin a monstrosity. He also agrees with the doctors that Belial's death is the only way to ensure Duane can live a normal life. Duane rescues his brother and heads for New York, carrying Belial in a small wicker basket. Here, they stay at the Hotel Broslin and plan their revenge - to kill the doctors responsible for their separation.

The film was shot on a budget of $33,000 - on 16mm film - mainly in Times Square and Manhattan. Henenlotter indeed came up with the premise whilst walking around Manhattan and taking in the dark and seedy atmosphere. Basket Case combines elements of horror and comedy and contains a substantial amount of gore, the film being released during the circa 1975-1985 splatterpunk movement. Henenlotter captures the seedy side of New York aptly, much of the film being set at night with the city streets lit up in neon, and the bizarre and unsavoury characters who frequent the Hotel Broslin.

The special effects - a mixture of puppets and stop motion - are not first-rate, but neither are they bad. The acting, again, is adequate. In fact, the film still holds up well today and has garnered a cult following over the years.

Image has put out some really bad blu rays. That have lines and scratches on them even, "time bandits' which is a A list movie looks really bad. This was a very small budget movie shot for vhs release back in the 80's. It used cheap film and was in full screen format. The format is preserved here and the film has been cleaned up. THis looks outstanding, and this how ALL IMAGE BLU RAYS should be done. Remastered and cleaned up, with no print damage. There are a few extras on this one too that add to the experience. No obviously non horror fans would trash this movie with it's quick cutaways and minimum budget. But we lovers of low budget horror and this is not a b movie , it's lower budgeted than that: dig this kind of cheaply made horror flick. The effects are everything from stopmotion figures , (they take pictures of a model frame by frame) to very effective puppet work ala many movies of that era. WHich often still looks better than some of todays cgi. See fright night for that. The first one is much better because of it's manual effects and far better story actually too. The acting is decent for firsttimers and the lead actor did a good job actually. Basketcase is good very low budget horror film, it suceeded in being a twisted movie when other higher budget movies like xtro did only a so so job. So for fans of this type of movie , this is a five star blu ray. IMAGE KEEP CLEANING UP YOUR MOVIES!.
