Product Description

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA’S powerful film of S.E. Hinton’s classic novel captures how it feels to be caught between childhood’s innocence and adulthood’s disillusionment. The ensemble is the original Brat Pack: MATT DILLON, TOM CRUISE, EMILIO ESTEVEZ, C. THOMAS HOWELL, DIANE LANE, PATRICK SWAYZE, ROB LOWE AND RALPH MACCHIO. In an intensely visual style, Coppola has made these street rats and their struggle both heroic and unforgettable.

They grew up on the outside of society. They weren’t looking for a fight. They were looking to belong. In 1966 Tulsa, teenagers come two ways. If you’re a “soc”, you’ve got money, cars, a future. But if you’re a “greaser”, you’re an outsider with only your friends... and a dream that someday you’ll finally belong.

From Amazon.co.uk

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular SE Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centres on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, The Outsiders nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane

The Outsiders is one of those rare films that changes forever the way you think.

The movie is based on my favourite book of all time by S E Hinton and if you havent read it you can buy it here The Outsiders (Puffin Modern Classics)

The film is based in the 1950's where there are 2 types of kids, you have the rich kids who are called the soc and you have the poor kids from the wrong side of town called the greasers.

Now the greasers and the soc never mix, its a bad idea but they are always having rumbles which are basically street fights.

Synopsis:

Ponyboy (c thomas howell) is the main character and the narrator od the story, he lives with his 2 brothers sodapop (Rob lowe) and Darry (patrick swayze). They kind of have an open house so their friends are always coming and going.
Steve (tom cruise), two bit emilio estevez), dallas (matt dillon) and johnny (ralph macchio).

Ponyboy and Johnny go to a movie and make friends with one of the soc girls, a young redhead called cherry (diane lane). Later that night whilst Ponyboy and Johnny are in the park a car full of soc kids come along and start a fight for talkign to cherry, one of the soc is about to kill ponyboy by drowning him and so johnny steps in and stabs the soc and in a panic fearing they will be sent to prison they decide to run away.

I wont tell you the rest of it as i would like for you to watch it yourself.

I first saw this film when it was released in the 80's and it has been one of my favourites ever since.

I like many other reviewers was a huge fan of both the book and the original movie. This DVD is great, it has many extra features which are extremely informative. The footage that has been added to the movie is a real improvement and more in keeping with the book, it also puts the Curtis family firmly at the centre of the story and helps to better explain the dynamics between all of the characters. In the original movie, you couldn't help but wonder whether or not Rob Lowe had been edited out due to weak acting or perhaps his part did not add to the synergy of the movie - this version proves that this was not the case and he is invaluable to the realtionship between the three brothers. The movie is definitely truer to the book than the orginal and it is a far better movie.
Now we come to the negative part which has been reflected by many others on Amazon and I have to admit I was very dubious whether or not it really warranted all of the negative comments from people who have a tendancy to whinge, but, the music is actually lousy and distracted from the script and flow of the movie. Not all of the music was lousy though, some of it earlier in the film did add to the atmoshphere, setting and time i.e. set the scene. From 'the rumble' onwards though, the music was far too loud and did nothing but interfere and distract from what should have been a prelude to the most emotional scenes and ending. The only music required from the church setting onwards could have been Gloria and the closing music by Stevie Wonder, unfortunately it is one long carcophony of annoyance. Was Coppola trying to emulate Tarantino's use of music?
I can't mark this movie as low as others simply because of the musical intrusion, lets just say that a 5 star movie has lost a star because of it. Is it just me?

Format: VHS Tape
The Outsiders (1983) is one of my all-time favourite teen films. I first watched it as part of a school project in 1984: we had to read the novel and watch the film for O' Level English Literature. I immediately went out and hired the VHS tape during the summer holidays and the film introduced me to a whole wave of new teen films starring the ''Brat Pack'', including Red Dawn (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), and St Elmo's Fire (1985). My film viewing was taken care of for the remainder of the decade.

The film is based on the novel by S E Hinton and is directed by Francis Ford Coppola (he directed The Outsiders back-to-back with Hinton's Rumble Fish (1983) after receiving a letter from an elementary school librarian and her students). The main cast of characters, the Greasers, are played by C Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise. They are a group of friends who live in a poor part of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their rivals are called the Socs, who come from affluent parents. The two gangs often meet up and fight, or ''rumble''.

*Spoiler Alert*
Brief Synopsis
The film opens with Pony writing the story (school report) that will follow. Pony has lived with his older brothers, Darry and Soda Curtis, since their parents were killed. Johnny Cade and Dally Winston both have parents who don't care about them. One night, Johnny and Pony are set upon by a group of Socs and Johnny kills the leader, Bob, in self defence. With help from Dally, they jump a freight train and hide in an old abandoned church in the country, Windrixville. They decide to turn themselves in after hearing from Dally that they could get off lightly as it was self defence and also that Darry and Soda are concerned about Pony.
