Heart of the Dragon marks one of Jackie Chan's few films featuring him in a serious role. The few moments of comedy is left to the likes of Sammo Hung who plays Chan's mentally challenged brother. There relationship in the film is established from the start of the film, with Chan caring dearly about his brother but is tested when he gets offered his dream job. Though this is rarely explored in the film, it provides the perfect frame work for the brothers bond. The story is very simple and does not really break any new grounds but is very effective because the film makes it obvious that these are good people and it is easy to sympathesis with both Jackie and Sammo's character. Especially towards the end where a typical cantonese ballad puntuates the nessecary emotional moment.

Action occurs less often than one would expect of a collaboration between Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung but when it appears it is top notch. The first fight occurs at the beginnig of the film and it is breif but features fine choreography with Jackie Chan and Lam Ching Ying going toe to toe. It isn't till the end that the real fight occurs with the likes of Chin Kar Lok, Chan Lung, Yuen Wah and Mang Hoi joining Jackie Chan. This lengthy fight features Chan making his way through a construction site taking on all opponents; the fights that are featured are surperbly staged and intense especially with the emotional build up that has led to this very moment. Chan's final opponent is the high kicker Dick Wei. Both deliver in the punches and kicks demonstrating real power and danger. Sadly Sammo Hung does not fight in this film but that is a minor quibble.

The drama gives the final action more emotional reason and is something that HK fight films rarely demonstrate.

This is an exellent jackie film which may have a lot of drama ( very good drama) but the final fight scene ranks among one of the greatest fight scenes ever shot. I have seen about 30 of his films and this is definately in his top 10. But beware that there is minimal fighting and a lot of high tension drama. I still give it two thumbs up, having watched his films since i was 9 i think this is a brilliant under rated film.

There is an awful lot to be said for Heart of the Dragon. It's an oddity of 80s era Jackie Chan for many reasons, his performance is subdued and he doesn't sing the incredibly literal theme song. The same is true of Sammo Hung, he doesn't fight and he plays a man child. It's a bizarre image to see Sammo dressed as a kid, with a bowl cut, holding hands with Jackie Chan - Heart of the Dragon, pre rain man's rain man. The action choreography by Yuen Biao is rough, someone is near enough decapitated and there's plenty of spade violence. Who knew a spade could be the source of the films best gag? Obliqueness and contrariness aside, this is one of the many great Jackie Chan films of the 80s.

Heart of the Dragon is a rare film for Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung in that it focuses much more on drama than on action sequences. The storyline mostly revolves around CID police officer Tat Fung (Chan) and his relationship with his mentally disabled brother, Danny (Hung). Chan's character is torn between becoming a sailor and leaving his brother in the care of others or forsaking his own dreams to care for him. It deals with the themes of love, loyalty and sacrifice among others.

Surprisingly then, the film starts on an exciting note with a training exercise in a forest involving Chan's character and his men playing terrorists up against a SWAT team, complete with 80's electro music. From then on in, though, the film descends into more dramatic territory. One of the best parts of this film, however, is the level of acting from both Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung, who play their parts with a high level of authenticity. Unlike most of the characters he plays, Chan's character in Heart of the Dragon is not a complete nice guy and as a result is much more realistic for it. He shows a degree of selfishness while trying to use his girlfriend to care for his brother while he fulfills his own ambitions.

Unfortunately the plot of the film, which only starts to develop after the half-way point, involving stolen jewellery, a double-crossing and a kidnapping, is needlessly contrived and convoluted in order for the film to reach its exciting climax. In any other comedy-based Chan/Hung film the plot really would not have mattered, but in a film which takes itself much more seriously, it feels out of place. Also, some other scenes in the film don't gel particularly well either. Again, a lack of realism in places wouldn't have mattered in a less serious film.

Just as advertised, it was a reasonable film with good straight performance by Jackie Chan and acceptable plot line based on illegal migration from China to Japan.

Lots of kung-fu but also some straight acting. Maybe some of the Sammo Hung set-ups seem patronising to a modern audience- a man with learning disabilities acting like a child, but the bit where he was made to act like a dog seemed to ring true. Jackie Chan was very good. It was a bad influence on a friend of mine who also started using kung-fu when they were upset.
