Having enjoyed the movies then their DVD versions I was surprised to discover this extended pack and had to compare it with the cinema and single-disc experiences.

These extended versions of the films are the original TV productions with much of the storyline retained, giving you far more depth to the story and the motivations of the characters, plus additional plotlines to flesh out the entire story.

This is an extra two hours of film and I strongly recommend everyone to choose this over any other current offering.

After watching the film versions of these highly enjoyable and intelligent books, I was delighted to find out that there existed an extended version because the second and third adaptations were quite condensed and compromised. This release features the version of the trilogy that was shown on Swedish television (and, I believe, French cable TV)and how it benefits. The overall story is gripping drama, with outstanding performances from all the main leads. The pacing is just right, and the additional scenes are crucial to the unfolding tale, with some quite subtle characterisation that was omitted from the film versions. In that respect, I would compare this to "The Godfather : The Epic" as both feature deleted scenes rightfully restored to present a more rounded story. I even watched the "dubbed" version which was very well done. Why the Americans found it necessary to remake it is a mystery. Is it merely because audiences over there are notorious for NOT wanting to read subtitles ? Otherwise itleads me to conclude that there were either financial considerations or a feeling of "we can do better than the Swedes"! In any event, this is still brilliant.

These extended sets at last make sense and are now close enough to the massive tomes by Larsson. I found the whole program captivating and the length was the least of my worries. It is a complex story and it takes some concentration to remember who is who. No familiar faces from American or British cinema to help! The Swedes have done a great job here. Tak! This is a thrilling package that will have most people on the edge of their seats. The sound is excellent and even the English dub has been done with taste to retain the essential Swedish feel. No Texan drawl or Yorkshire slang here. The picture in part one was a bit soft but got better as the rest of the tale progressed. There is no comparison with the original cut releases, this is the set to get. I had only one minor grumble: It would have been even better if the option to run the two parts together without the exit and enty sections had been available. This would have been easy with seamless branching. The paper packing got a hard time in the mail, I would have preferred a standard slim-line box. Excellent value.

This series is as good as the book of not better. I loved the books and I love the movies and all the characters are spot-on. Also appriciate the extended version even if it means no-action for a while because its still adding value to the movie.

I have just watched the first 2 episodes that were combined and then cut for a cinema release, there is nothing dramatic added but the peripheral characters are fleshed out and there is more of the interaction between Lisbeth and Micke which adds to the understanding of their relationship. Some other scenes are extended and help the film's flow. Definitely worth the money especially when parts 3,4,5 and 6 were cut even more for the cinema release of 'Played With Fire' and 'Kicked The Hornets Nest'.

You also find out about 'Sally'........................

Having seen the original film versions and enjoyed them, I had to have these. And, yes, they're better, more complete, than the shortened versions. The whole thing has a nice feel about it, and the characters/actors are excellent. It does give the impression that Sweden is full of perverts, which I'm sure is no more true of Sweden than anywhere else. However, Stieg Larsson's major point was crimes against women and how these can be so easily swept under the carpet, especially in the service of "national security", so the perverts who prey on women naturally take centre-stage.

My one reservation was one I had about the books and which Noomi Rapace herself voices in the interview in the fourth disc - the Jack Bauerish cartoon nature of Lisbeth Salander, a girl who, in spite of a lack of formal education is a genius hacker and a whiz at manipulating international finance, who is short and scrawny, yet able to overcome more powerful assailants, and who is able not only to survive a bullet in the brain but to come back from it.

In spite of this, the three films make a gripping tale.

A difficult problem facing those adapting large novels for the big screen is how to contain the richness and complexity of the source within a manageable running time for cinema release.
One example which instantly springs to mind is "The Lord of the Rings", and another is Stig Larsson's monumentally successful "Millennium Trilogy". Anyone viewing the initial cinema cuts of the Swedish thriller will be aware of the problem. Even with running times of over two hours, compromises are evident; corners are cut with regard to character and plot development, and the editing is necessarily zealous. Members of the cinema audience unfamiliar with the novels could be forgiven for being occasionally puzzled by events. It falls, then, to this extended edition "home viewing" cut to offer a proper prospect of justice to the subject, and this edition delivers in spades.
Personally, I prefer the screen adaptations to Larsson's novels. They retain all the elements which make for a first class thriller, but throttle back a bit in terms of being a platform for the author's social and political values. The novel's social comment, while laudable, is shovelled on repeatedly with a trowel. It's an over-elaboration which becomes hectoring and makes certain plot lines seem contrived and repetitive, just for the purpose of hammering home the point again. It makes the reader want to shout "yes yes! point taken already!", and is ultimately counterproductive to the narrative flow of the work.
If you bought the cinema release editions, take them to a charity shop and invest in this set. You won't be disappointed; it's gripping and exciting, a thundering good watch.
