I know the previous reviewers have already done a good job in commenting on both film and DVD, but I just thought I'd add the odd thing. Like most true horror fans I've been waiting along time for this to be released to replace my old VHS copy. I remember ordering this from the Horror Vault (mail order place where at the time I got all my horrors) about late 1999 and that version was uncut so I never bothered with the Vipco release. "Nightmare" has always been up there among my fave slashers although it won't be for all tastes. The sleaze element is high and the violence bloody and brutal. Those only used to likes of "Scream" etc forget about watching this. Direction wise it's atmospheric with a great creepy soundtrack and Baird Stafford is amazing as the schizophrenic murderer George Tatum.

As for the DVD the 2011 transfer is the best. There are some short interviews as extras as well as a commentary. As already mentioned there is a 95 minute interview with the director but only in Italian with no English subtitles so therefore useless. What Code Red were thinking I will never know! Apparently Romano Scavolini can speak English too. However, despite this I'm just grateful that this has finally been released.

N.I.A.D.B.is a horror masterpiece and despite it being over 30yrs old its essential viewing for all horror fans.yes like all films it does have flaws mainly some boring dialogue but the gore scenes alone are worth the price of admission.and despite some dispute whether tom savini had any part in the special effects make up in the film is neither here or there now.ed french was credited with special make up effects and tom savini director of special effects and on viewing the gore scenes i dont believe tom savini did the make effects, but they were very graphic and bloody and thats what the film is all about really.writer and director romano scavolini does a good job but in all fairness the film is boring in parts and is only saved by the gory death scenes.i can see why the film was banned but when you compare it with films like zombie flesh eaters and the new halloween remake which are available uncut they are just as bloody as N.I.A.D.B.and its about time they released it uncut in the uk.this code red version is uncut and gives you 3 different work prints of the film.overall a masterpiece in bloody horror but dont expect to much in terms of dialogue etc.

As a fan of 70's and 80's horror, Nightmare or Nightmare in a Damaged Brain was an essential purchase. The fact that this DVD is fully uncut meant that Nightmare certaintly jumped the queue of must have horrors in my ever growing list. I was further excited and curious by the reviews of this movie on Amazon. Just six up to this one, but it was the marks that intrigued me. 4 reviews gave this an exciting 5 star max, while one gave a very solid 4. Again this only made me even more curious to buy and watch this movie. But then a recent reviewer who claims to also like the excellent Maniac sent me into a frenzy after giving this movie only 1 star. Was this reviewer spot on and the other 5 not having a clue what horror is? Or simply that the 1 star reviewer didn't know what they were talking about?

Well having watched Nightmare twice back to back I think all reviews of this movie are in fact partically right.
Nightmare is not a classic horror movie, certaintly not in the same class as Maniac. However it is far from being a poor movie, and is streets ahead of seemingly hundereds of churned out horror/slasher shockers of the time.
The Italian director does a very good job here, you can see that his goal is to make the best film that he can with the genre that he is directing. However the acting is borderline poor. Stafford, the killer though is very convincing, and often very frightening. He is well cast as he looks like a next door neighbour, just an ordinary Joe. But unfortunetly no matter how well the movie is directed as said before it does feel that the entire cast are acting for the first time. In one way this does actually add in certain scenes to the realism of the movie.

I don't mind movies that take time to build their characters.

It's here, thank God!!! Its been over half a decade since Code Red promised us the video nasty "Nightmare" or "Nightmares in a Damaged Brain" as its known over here uncut and there have been times when I felt this just wasn't going to happen but here it is in a two disc version boasting three different transfers, a few short interviews and a 95 minute interview with the director.... okay scratch the last part as its in Italian without any subtitles and thus not much use to most people living in Britain or America where the disc was released for that matter, I know Code Red are a low budget company and that they struggle at times but they really should've just paid a little more and got the interview subtitled, after all its bound to hurt their credibility.

Extra's aside lets talk about the film itself, the film is a 80's gory slasher focusing on the violent exploits of a madman on parol traumatised by dreams of murder as he slowly stalks and kills people living in a small community by the sea having escaped the dark, seedy world of New York, a small boy begins to suspect something but being a first class brat and prankster no-one takes him seriously, as the killer moves closer and closer are he and his mother destined for death, the film lags a little in the middle but not moreso than so many other slashers of a similar kind, of course this isn't the sort of film to win over everybody but it has a great appeal to fans of video nasties, Italian horrors, exploitation and 80's slasher films as one of the standout films of this type and at times it certainly does stand out.
