Product Description

Los Angeles in the year 1996. The streets are ruled by acts of violence and terror, nothing and nobody is safe. Simon Phoenix is one of the worst criminals that Los Angeles has ever seen, and only one man can stop him--L.A.P.D. officer John "Demolition Man" Spartan. When John apprehended Phoenix, he was surprisingly found as an accessory to the recent crime and was also sent to the "Cryo Prison". During John Spartan's sentence, Los Angeles' theme and society had dramatically changed from one of violence to one of peace. Phoenix, revived for a parole hearing managed to escape and uses Los Angles to his advantage. The police are unable to stop him with their non-violent solutions and have no choice but to let out John Spartan to stop him. Now, Spartan not only has to stop Phoenix, but to adapt himself to the future society he has no knowledge about.

From Amazon.co.uk

Searching for new directions, Sylvester Stallone starred in this farcical, 1993 SF piece about an ex-cop (Stallone) freed from 36 years of forced hibernation to help catch a criminal (Wesley Snipes) who released himself from a similar incarceration. The futuristic story finds Los Angeles a sea of Taco Bells and enforced peace and within that satiric overview Stallone's character becomes a gun-toting fish out of water. The film plays like a live-action cartoon and while there is nothing particularly wrong with that, Demolition Man is a rather flat experience. The irony of a peaceable society that both requires and despises its bloody saviours has been captured far more profoundly in movies like Dirty Harry. Sandra Bullock costars. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The nineties were famous for its action movies and the heroes who punched and shot their way through them. In the `friendly' rivalry between Stallone and Schwarzenegger, they both had their hits and misses. Demolition Man was not Stallone's biggest hit, but, then again, it certainly wasn't a miss.

Watching it nearly twenty years after it was made is still a joy. It's still, loud, proud, blatantly tongue-in-cheek in places and a great watch. Stallone is the cop, frozen in time along with his arch criminal nemesis, Snipes, and both of them defrosted in a (supposedly) utopian future, only to rage havoc once again.

There are plenty of jokes to go alongside the action and Sandra Bullock is great as the plucky lead (and you can see why her performance led on to her true breakthrough role in Speed a year later). And Nigel Hawthorne should also get a nod for his `futuristic version of Sir Humphrey' in San Angeles - great to see such a serious character actor trading insults with Hollywood's hard men!

If you like your action movies fun and light-hearted then Demolition Man stands up to the test of time. It may not be Rambo, Rocky or the Terminator franchise, but it deserves its place in nineties-action history (even if just for making the audience ask the question `Just what exactly was the deal with the `three seashells'?).

Finally, we get the uncut version for home viewing! :)

The UK DVD is missing two hits to the head of Stallone in the final fight, along with a double ear-clap (the BBFC used to cut these routinely, even from 18 films!) for fear of imitabilty. However, they have seen the stupid and ridiculous errors of their ways and this Blu-ray edition is fully uncut :)

Enjoy - its a clever, funny, thrilling 90s actioner.

Being a Stallone Fan i Love this Movie!!! After a bit of a slump Stallone came back with this little Gem. It stars Stallone as tough Cop John Spartan! A no nonsense Cop who is trying to restore order to 90's LA, which is out of control down to a Criminal Gang headed by Leader Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) Phoenix's Gang are holding a bunch of Hostages in their Lair, and Spartan is sent in to get them out. A Battle between Spartan & Phoenix soon breaks out and although Spartan Wins this round, it is Phoenix who has the last laugh, as unknown to Spartan the Building he thought to be clear of Hostages, was in fact not, so the Building Spartan just Blew up was full of Innocents! A trick Phoenix had planned all along to set up Spartan. Both Phoenix and Spartan are sent to serve time in a New type of Prison, one where the Inmates are Frozen in Cryo Units so as to serve their time without Aging. Thirty Five Years later and Spartan is Thawed out to find a very different La! A one where Crime, Violence, Aggression, Swearing and even the Physical act of Sex are no more, and everyone he knew is Dead and Gone! This supposed Paradise is not all it seems, as Spartan soon Discovers when he witnesses, and Fights an Underground Criminal Gang Trying to Steal Food, which turn out to be a Underground Resistance movement in actual fact, who don't want to Buy into this Paradise which just Masks the Truth! That it is a Totalitarian Society with a Crazy Totalitarian Leader, pretending to be Righteous!!! Spartan is also soon to Discover he is not alone in this Strange New World, as Phoenix and the whole Gang are back and up to their old Tricks!!! This is Stallone at his Best again, with his Style of Action and One Liners. A Cool little Action set in the Future, that is Entertaining from Start to Finish!!!

I look at the incredibly low rating on internet forums and I can only presume that those who voted are from the arty farty set, the kind of people who class a 7 minute shot of a curtain as the pinnacle of great cinema. I can't for the life of me believe that any fan of the dumb action popcorn picture could not have enjoyed this tremendously fun, violent, and furious film.

It's 1996 and L.A. is in chaos, Sly Stallone is tough bastard cop John Spartan, a cop who is known as The Demolition Man because he does what it takes to take the bad guys down. After a slam bang encounter with ultimate bad maniac Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes having the time of his life) he gets thrown into permanent cryogenic prison (along with the apprehended Phoenix) for not saving some hostages during the show down with Phoenix. The plot then spins us to San Angeles 2032 where there is little to no crime except for some mild survival crime from an underground army led by a delightfully stoic Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary), but somehow Simon Phoenix is out, and the future is about to revert back to chaos and destruction.

The police of the time just can't cope, so they thaw out Spartan to catch his old sparring partner to hopefully end the chaos that San Angeles now finds itself in. The jokes are thick and fast as Stallone enjoys laughing at himself, it's also an interesting vision of the future that writers Peter M. Lenkov and Robert Reneau have created, but in amongst the jokes is a very cute social commentary that may have been missed by the arty farty set, so although the film serves purely as a one date no brainer offering, it still can proudly lay claim to being one of the best that the genre had to offer not only 1993 (a good year for action movies), but also the whole decade.

Leave the brain at the door, turn all the speakers up, and enjoy the ride. Oh and don't look at the curtains. 9/10
