Product Description

Inside the mind of Argento...

Sit back, relax and prepare to be thrilled, frightened and horrified by the four latter day Dario Argento classics contained within The Neo-Giallo Collection.

Baroque excess and eyelid piercing horror spill from the screen in Opera, Argento s gory love song to the classical stage, when a young singer is stalked by a homicidal maniac, hell bent of murdering her associates so he can claim her for himself!

A police woman on the trial of depraved and sadistic rapist is plunged into a nightmare in The Stendhal Syndrome. She s afflicted with a mental condition that causes her to hallucinate and pass out in the presence of art. When her prey leads her to a museum packed with antiquities, she becomes trapped in a psychedelic nightmare by her psychopathic nemesis.

Argento recaptures the magic of classic Giallo once more in Sleepless, a blood splattered tale of an aging detective and a young amateur sleuth on the trail of a serial killer whose has started to slay again after laying dormant for 17 years. Can the rookie cop and his elderly mentor catch the predator and put an end to his reign of terror?

When a sick-minded murderer uses the internet to display his brutality and goad the Rome police, it s up to a British Interpol agent and a young policewoman to capture a deranged madman who s dubbed himself The Card Player. Soon, he s taunting the police and challenging them to a game of video poker. The stakes? Only the life of his next victim...

I did not pay very much money for this from Amazon. I think it was near to a fiver! Therefore it was an absolute bargain and I rate it highly for that reason alone.

The films themselves mainly represent Dario Argento's later period, and (with the possible exception of Terror at the Opera which was made in 1987 - a full ten years before the other films included in the boxset) represent a weaker output compared to his early works.

For those of you who are familiar with Argento's earlier classic films, and have an interest in pursuing his less well known works, then maybe this is for you, if you can obtain it cheaply. If you didn't like the films he's renowned for (like Suspiria) I would find it difficult to see how you would appreciate the films herein, as they are of a much lower appeal.

I would say buy it if it's cheap (as I did) as Opera is good. Avoid otherwise, unless you have a total interest in Argento films - enough to be a completest!

Arrow have released an interesting box set consisting of 4 of Argento's latter day Giallo's . Beginning with 'Terror at the Opera', arguably the great director's last film of true worth, this film is recommended to anyone who enjoyed Argento's undisputed classics such as 'Deep Red', 'Suspiria' or 'Inferno'. Full of bravura set-pieces and explicit gore this film just seems to get better and better on repeat viewing and is highly recommended. If you don't buy this box-set, do yourself a favour and pick up a standalone copy, Its that good! Coming a close second in the quality stakes is 'Sleepless'. A return to relative form for Argento, this film at least attempts to revive the Giallo genre in the 00's and is enjoyable while it lasts. Unfortunately, it just doesn't leave an impression like his early classics. A great performance from Max 'The Exorcist' Von Sydow anchors the film and it is worth 2 hours of your time. 'The Stendahl Syndrome' is an odd film and in all honesty I am yet to decide if I actually like it. Some imaginative set-pieces and the obligatory gore are soured by the abuse Dario inflicts on his own daughter for the sake of the movie. Its unnerving to see the rape of any woman on screen but to view the rape and torture of an actress knowing that the man behind the camera is her own father leaves me somewhat conflicted. A good film, but that is all. Give it a go.....you may love it. But be warned! The final film in the box-set is the almost universally hated 'The Card Player'. An Argento film that could have been directed by any straight to video hack, it is disappointing to say the least and can be grouped with other Argento failures such as 'Giallo', 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'The Mother of Tears'.Read more ›
