Six friends head out on road trip but their drive is cut short when they run into Maya, a strange girl who wanders out of nowhere into their path claiming she s been robbed. The friends decide to give her a ride to her isolated house, deep in the woods. There Maya introduces them to her courteous mother, Dara, an ageless enigma of a woman who insists that their Good Samaritan act should be repaid with a feast. This is when the night turns into a bloody horror show for the six friends as they find themselves trapped and hunted by Dara, and her three deadly protégés, who have been born and raised to systematically eliminate unsuspecting passersby for one evil reason.

I have never seen an Indonesian film before, but am i sure glad i saw this one! Extremely gritty and gorey. Reminded me of a couple of french movies ive seen, Inside and Frontiers. Its on that level of terror and suspense if you have seen those two movies. Macabre starts off with friends drinking at bar. When leaving in their car a mysterious and beautiful young lady is standing in the middle of the road in the pouring rain. The friends decide to give the young lady a lift home as it is on their way. When arriving at her house she insists that that they should be repayed for their kindness. This is not the type of repaying i would like to receive! But it does make for some entertaining viewing! If you like your horror hardcore this is for you!

this is another little gem in the foreign horror movie genre.A very intriguing story with an unusual cast of characters. This is not for the faint hearted,It is very violent with some blood soaking scenes but a very good effort.

Darah, or known internationally by Macabre, is arguably the best Indonesian gore/slasher film genre to date. It exceeds expectations, and delivers on what it promises; great scenes, and tensions that will keep you awake until the end credits. The film starts rather slowly, but it soon picks up tempo at around the 20-minute mark. There is a lack of substance in the plots, but the scenes made up for it. Six friends, including an eight months pregnant woman and a couple of continuously arguing siblings, are on a long road trip to Jakarta when they stop to pick up a seemingly disorientated girl who – according to her own confusing story – got carjacked and left behind in the middle of the road. They reluctantly decide to do the right thing and bring her home, but obviously this is just the girl's routine to lure unsuspecting people to her remote backwoods house and meet up with the rest of the deranged homicidal family. The head of the family, Mother Darah, seemingly found the secret to eternal youth but petrifies with her sinister stare and asocial behavior. The guests are brutally tortured and slaughtered one by one and for no apparent reason, except maybe mother Darah's unusual interest in Astrid's unborn baby… The gore in this film is just off the charts, you get everything from decapitations to chainsaw dismemberments to people being hacked off in every way imaginable. This almost rivals films like Dead Alive and the French film Inside when it comes to bloody carnage. There is a bit of humor in there as well, especially with the incompetent police who appear later on during the film. Although the film does well in mixing several genres you do get the feeling that the film could have been slightly better if it just focused on the main storyline instead of having a bizarre subplot that didn't make sense. That being said, the director's eye was impressive and some of the cinematography were unusual, it's diffidently worth checking out for gorehounds.

I must admit, on first viewing I was less than impressed with this film. The first half-hour dragged and I found most of the protagonists highly annoying. After a couple of weeks it was nagging at me; a couple of scenes wouldn't leave my mind, so I watched it again. I really rather enjoyed it second time around. Rather like having friends who are less-than-mature and annoying at times, I found the characters more real and could put up with their peculiarities, as one does with friends.
The tension was high - although not on a level with Frontiers [DVD] (the plot being very similar).
The three offspring of Lady Dara were truly creepy - there's the fat, sweaty and repulsive brother, the slutty, psychotic sister, and the good-looking but emotionless brother, who seems to have designs on our heroine. Most of the sympathy goes to the heavily-pregnant Astrid and her rather incapable husband.
Dara herself is almost impossibly beautiful and very powerful, with a gaze that comes right off the screen.
So, yeah. It's not perfect and it's not the scariest film out there, but it was fun and the effects were brilliant. Not as eye-melting as Inside [DVD] or Martyrs [DVD], but it's trying its damndest to be!

Pretty bad film really. There is hope in the beginning to see how it pans out but it quickly just becomes one gory scene after another... plenty of truly gruesome scenes but really falls down on any build up or suspense. I'm afraid while it certainly tries, it just does not bring anything new or original for me. The acting jumps between being really wooden to over the top and at times is just a bit silly really! We don't really get to know the characters and so don't really understand or feel or remember them. I struggled to stay interested. The focus is on gore, but it falls behind on other ingredients that are needed to make it a good film. Not at all recommended.

Another reviewer compared this Indonesian effort to the French horrors "Inside" and "Frontiers". Yes it is gory as are the other films, but i think the similarities end there.
The French films imo display a style and a pacing that are severely lacking here.
The pacing is feeble in "Macabre" i feel, and the film really dragged for me.
Just one bloody set piece after the next with very little suspense or continuity.
Check out the French films instead. I think you'll get a much better viewing experience
