It's an interesting entry in the series, and I went back and forth on whether to include it as part of Film Gutter, but I struggle to think of something in recent memory that has left me quite this harrowed and upset at the end of its run time. Don't be fooled by this movie – there might be more extreme films visually out there, but this packs an undoubted punch.

The plot of Megan is Missing is relatively simple, although it is really interestingly delivered. Megan and Amy are best friends, both 14 years old, with Megan being vivacious and outgoing and Amy being shy, retiring and self-conscious. Megan's other friends don't really understand why she likes Amy, but it's clear their friendship has far more depth to it than the vacuous partying she does with her other schoolmates. Most of the film is shot three ways – one via online webcam conversation, the other on mobile phone videochat, and the third through the lens of Amy's video camera, a gift for her 14th birthday.

In a sense Megan isn't really the lead, despite the title. She's omnipresent in the first half of the film, as the most popular girl in school and her outrageous antics certainly make her popular with the guys at school. We find out more about the past that leads to this kind of behaviour on her part as the story wears on, but Amy is probably the person whose eyes we see most of the story through. And when Megan meets Josh online – a mysterious and shy stranger she is introduced to – they develop a relationship. Megan goes to meet Josh for the first time, and is never seen again.

From there we follow the attempts to find Megan, partly by police and media and in no small part by Amy, who tries to retrace her friend's steps through her video diary.

The main problem that I had with this film is just how utterly unconvincing the first half hour of this movie was. I think the reason the director made the girls so young was to make it more shocking, but to be pretty much confirming that this is what America's young teens are doing is ridiculous! It would of been pretty convincing if they were a couple years older but no they had to be younger to make it more shocking. Once I'd accepted that this is the way fourteen year olds were being portrayed in the film I just got stuck in with the film, and once the online chats began that is when it grabbed my attention. There were points in this film that genuinely unnerved and angered me, and also it is worth adding that one particular scene will really have an impression, those pictures have burrowed into my head! If it wasn't for the awful first half of this movie I would of thought much higher of it, but it is definitely worth watching just for the experience and ordeal of the ending, it feels disturbingly real.

Expected more from this film .Serious subject matter but just didn't come across very well. Very repetitive and could have been directed better .Picture quality very good from this unrated region 1 version Not worth top marks in my opinnion.

Megan is Missing is a really powerful movie that leaves an indelible impression on the viewer. It's a strange film, but the final twenty-odd minutes are downright chilling and very, very disturbing. I knew nothing about this movie going in to it, and for a while I thought the filmmaker was just using the idea of Internet predators in another bid to cash in on the reality-based movie craze (the film consists of "found footage" from webcams, cell phones, and videotapes). Well before the end, though, it was crystal clear that this was not the case. Megan is Missing is, as they say, as serious as a heart attack - even more serious than that, really, because a heart attack is a natural event. There is nothing natural about the fates of Megan and her friend Amy in this movie. The most awful thing about it all is the fact that every incident in this film is based on an actual event - not one single event, but a conglomeration of a number of different child abduction cases. It is truly horrifying to know that everything that happened to these girls did actually happen to one or more poor children.

The story revolves around two best friends: 14-year-olds Megan (Rachel Quinn) and Amy (Amber Perkins). The girls could not be more different - Megan is a bit of a wild child who has already experimented with drugs and sex, while Amy is mousy, virginal, and inhibited - but their friendship is very real. The two talk numerous times each day over cell phones, webcams, and in person. Amy wishes she could be as uninhibited as Megan, while Megan longs for the stable family life that Amy enjoys. One of the things Megan likes to do is to chat with boys over the Internet, and it is there that she "meets" Josh. Josh's webcam is conveniently broken, but he certainly seems like a nice guy.

Poignant movie as to what could and does happen if teenagers are left to their own devices whilst using computers unsupervised! But feel that no parent could watch this movie comfortably and never with their teenager despite what the storyline puts across! Is deeply unsettling and warning is in place rightfully.
