A group of college kids voluenteer to stay behind over the holidays and clear out an old dorm that has just been condemmed. Little do they realise that like 99% of us colleges in the early eighties, the campus has its very own psychotic killer, hell-bent on whittling the hapless teens down one by one in as many creatively gory ways as is possible!
To clarify the tiltle, yep this is indeed notorious 'video nasty' pranks under the alternate title dorm that dripped blood, though its not the pranks you remember from the halcyon days of vhs (or the sub-par vhs rip that vipco turned out). Synapse have unearthed the origional 'directors cut' 35mm answer print thought lost with extra never before seen extended gore footage and extra scenes that were cut from previous releases. Do they make the film any better? Not really, pranks will always be considered by me to be a guilty pleasure rather than a suspensful tour-de force. It has to be said the gore scenes and the christopher young soundtrack are fantastic but the acting and pacing are still ropey to say the least and it ticks almost every established cliche' in the slasher handbook, though in all fairness pranks is a student film made for almost zero money by first time filmakers so I applaud the fact the film isnt some artsy pretensious mess. Nontheless pranks is a fun film and slasher enthusiasts will probably get plenty of kicks from the movie.
The disc/s are region 0 so the blu-ray runs fine on my ps3. The print is grainy and a little dark but thats more to do with the source materials than synapses transfer which makes the film look as good as its going to get. I do think its unfair on the fans who dont especially want this on blu-ray that they have to get it this way in order to get the dvd, as it would be nice to give people the chance.

Finally The Dorm That Dripped Blood aka Death Dorm aka Pranks is given the best treatment possible by Synapse films after being cut to shreds and having bad prints of the movie for 30 years. Because of the painstaking task of getting and finding the original 35mm strips thought lost and the extras this product gets an extra star- the movie itself I would give three stars too.

Plot follows a group of students who are clearing up a deserted dorm that is due to be knocked down in a few weeks however there is a killer on the prowl knocking off each one. The movie gets off to a great start and gorehounds will love the uncut source material, almost every kill is very bloody. The acting is not that bad considering this is a low budget slasher, although a couple of actors are not really at the races. The biggest fault with the movie is that it does plod a little, mostly to fill up the running time and also because the script is quite weak. But there are many more slashers from this time out there that are far worse. The most recognizable actress will probably be Daphne Zuniga who went on to have a decent Hollywood career. She's always very charming in her roles however she was very young here and has much to learn in her acting chops.

So even though there is a lull in proceedings half way through the film it is quite refreshing in a sense that the kids know that someone is stalking them early on, instead of no one knowing anything until it's too late. This follows then the classic whodunnit scenario and there are certainly a few characters too choose from. All in all a very decent slasher movie. The only real complaint is the cover of the dvd blu ray combo which has nothing to do with the movie, the dorm is not a creepy looking mansion. Worth a buy for horror collectors.

The low budget 1982 slasher flick "The Dorm That Dripped Blood" makes it's Blu ray debut here courtesy of cult American label Synapse Films on a region free Blu ray and DVD combo pack. Released in the UK under the title "Pranks" this was banned during the video nasty witch-hunt of the early 80s and never seen in its complete form since. In 1992 this was re-released to UK home video albeit with 10 seconds of BBFC imposed cuts to the already censored American "R" rated version. Under the title "Pranks" this was then picked up for countless low quality public domain DVD releases(including Vipco who even paired this up in a two movie set with Larry Cohen's "God Told Me To") utilising the same cut print and poor fullscreen transfer.
It does appear that Synapses have worked abit of a miracle with this mostly forgotten title and unearthed not only the uncensored version but also the trims made by the MPAA that were cut for the US "R" rating that nobody, not even the director had seen in over thirty years making this the longest and most complete cut in existance. The print used for this new HD master bears the alternate onscreen title of "Death Dorm".

Synopsis:
The oh so simple story begins on the eve of the Christmas vacation with a group of college kids volunteering to clear an unsafe and condemned dorm that it is to be renovated into an apartment complex. In the greatest 80s slasher movie tradition the seemingly simple task is soon disrupted when a creepy looking man is seen skulking around the deserted campus, the caretaker complains of missing power tools and inevitably students start disappearing.
