Yet another dreadful DVD of this film which is shown in 4x3 ratio ......it should be 2:35:1 . Why it keeps getting released so badly is a shame as its actually quite a reasonable movie . There are no extras or subtitles at all .

Not much love and not many bullets in Love and Bullets, which sees Charles Bronson's cop escorting Jill Ireland's gangster's moll ("I'm the best lay- ..dee") across Europe to testify against mob boss Rod Steiger, who's presumably wanted on charges of overacting with an unlicensed stage stutter and find themselves pursued by Paul Koslo's half-deaf hood and Henry Silva's overpriced but not terribly effective hitman and his girlfriend Lorraine Chase. Married or not, there's no chemistry between the stars and, in a part that seems to be written for Dolly Parton, Ireland shows neither range or remotest sign of acting ability, which makes the journey feel longer than it should, and there's not really enough action along the way to liven things up (and even less in the version that played UK theatres which cut out some of Bronson's improvised weaponry). Pretty much the last Charles Bronson film to have A-list production values and an A-list director - at least until John Huston left the picture and was replaced by Stuart Rosenberg - it's nothing special. Still, Anthony Richmond's cinematography of the Swiss locations is very appealing and at least the weather stayed nice for them.

As with the Region 4 PAL Australian DVD and previous PAL releases, the DVD is cropped fullframe (only the end titles are in the original widescreen) with no extras but is uncut.

Filmed in Panavision but 4:3 panned-and-scanned, from what appears to be a transfer probably 15 or 20 years old. In this day and age, unforgivable.

I bought this film for a particular reason which I will not bore you with and would not normally bother post a review of this type of subject matter.

Let me say, however, that it is a competently made professional product in all departments except perhaps a rather exaggerated dumb blond from Jill Ireland.

My sole reason for posting a review is the ludicrous pan and scan format - how can this sort of nonsense still be being perpetrated?

I have only ever met one person who preferred pan & scan - because, he said, he did not like the black strips top and bottom: but with the new format of TV screens the black strips are now at the sides - perhaps he would prefer old films stretched to eliminate those!

One cannot watch this film in its present form without being all too aware that half the image is missing - somewhat akin to watching a film through a keyhole!

As I said, I bought this film for a specific reason and hated doing so - I urge one and all never to buy pan and scan products so that this practise will end - remember, the philistines out there will not end this stupidity for artistic reasons - only commercial factors count and if not buying their misconceived product is the only way to educate them, then so be it.

There is an easily accessible version of this in 16:9 if YOU look for it, not the 21:9 of Panavision but certainly better than 4:3.
The movie seems to be a mix of all that's good and bad and highly implausible in movies. What's GOOD is the superbly stunning location photography and the violent set pieces. What's BAD is Jill Ireland's irritating vocal characterisation, BUT what's even WORSE is Rod Steigers portrayal with his unconvincing embarrasing stammer. Not that 'stammers' are embarrassing, but his performance is. Many years ago Rod Steiger played Al Capone to perfection. If he had played the character in this movie in a similar convincing way it would have been a classic cameo role and the acting hi-lite of the movie, instead of the forgettable and regrettable one which it is, and what's implausible is Bronsons superbly accurate and deadly blowpipe! However, if you can overlook all that's wrong with it it passes off as 90 mins reasonable entertainment, and I have seen a lot worse. KAN

This movie is one of the old time classic's of Charles Bronson films collection worth having and money value from Amazon.
The main storyline is great and great action all the way except the odd part of love in the movie and yet again great acting by the great Rod Steiger and Henry Silva to me I have the movie now and you can not beat the old movies because this movie has less nudity and fowl language not like with the new and latest movies like today.
