Californication follows the trials and tribulations of writer Hank Moody, played by David Duchovny. Hank drinks, does drugs, gets far more women than he should, alienates his friends, and somehow shambles on through life without managing to pick a direction. He should be a terrible character, but in fact he's a delight to watch, mostly because Duchovny produces a career-best performance.

When we first meet Hank he's a successful writer who moved from New York to LA to see his best book turned into a movie, and appears to be living the high life. In fact, his long-term girlfriend Karen has left him, his relationship with their teenage daughter Becca is bad, and he is unable to write.

In the first season, Hank is unable to accept that Karen is marrying a new man, and when he finally finds inspiration to write, he finds that his self-destructive behaviour has sabotaged his chances of dragging himself out. The other significant characters are Hank's best friend and agent Charlie Runkle, and his wife Marcie. Charlie should be a stabilising influence, but is too far into Hank's charismatic spell to pull him out of it.

In season two, Hank has had a near-miraculous improvement in his life that he probably doesn't deserve. In addition, a drunken night sees him drawn into the circle of famous record producer Lew Ashby, who wants him to write his biography. Unfortunately, Ashby's partying makes Hank look like a boring stay-at-home, and Hank quickly spirals down into his old ways again. This season features the best episode of the series, set largely in a single room where a simple dinner party contrives to sow chaos and discord.

.....but I loved this. I was an X Files fan and brought this for David Duchovny and was pleased. It's far from the X Files but it gritty drama.

We heard about this series through a friend and thought it would be entertaining and perhaps a bit saucy (ahem). Well it didn't really deliver on the sauce but it made up for it in so many ways. It is funny and entertaining and we were hooked from the start. Not quite finished the set, just taking a break from it and gearing up for season 2 and 3. Service/ delivery from Amazon excellent as ever.

I was introduced to this series by a friend, and it is verrrrrry good! Rather 'naughty', again and again....! It's hilarious and I can't stop watching it! Plus David Duchovny is lush and obviously a brilliant actor-I only knew him from The X Files previously, and this series proves he can act as any character!

Californication is a superb series, David Duchovny is fantastic and the whole cast makes it one of my favorite TV shows. It's dark, funny, emotional and sexy all rolled into one brilliantly written show. The later seasons get a little silly, but you have to love Hank Moody....

By Mr. D. L. Rees TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 9 Oct. 2012
Format: DVD
Series creator Tom Kapinos says the title does not refer to the raunchy content. Viewers may be forgiven for thinking otherwise, for there is so much of it. Instead this is a reference to the State's effect on New Yorker Hank Moody, his life now in freefall with writer's block and disintegrating relationships.

At heart this is the love story of Hank and Karen, whom he never got round to marrying. Their level-headed daughter Becca forever wishes they could sort themselves out. Instead Hank simply cannot help himself - drinking and womanizing his preferred alternatives to work.

Kapinos declares the sex is not intended to be erotic but funny, this after all a comedy simply extending previously accepted boundaries. It certainly does that. California itself may not be mainly populated by people addicted to swearing and obsessed with sex, but the series seems to be - each of the 36 episodes containing explicit encounters, they often destined to be embarrassingly interrupted.

Although hooked on various ground-breaking shows, their nudity and swearing rarely posing a problem, I found "Californication" cold and uninvolving. Parts of the first season grab attention most promisingly, but so much of what follows simply marks time with little character development. David Duchovny, Natascha McElhone and Madeleine Martin impress as Hank, Karen and Becca. Elsewhere there seems scarcely a soul to like, just shallow people in a society all image and no substance. Only in the final episode does everything soar. There the emotions are intense as three seasons dramatically complete an arc - an incident in the pilot now with devastating consequences.

Many extras, Seasons 2&3 each with an extra disc full of them.

I only bought this series because it was cheep and it had David Duchovny in it. I'm so glad I did its utterly brilliant. Its well written, witty and you fall in love with the characters especially Hank (Duchovny) and his daughter. It contains very adult content and not for the faint hearted but most of it is relevant to the story. Californication follows the messed up life of failing writer Hank Moody (Duchovny). He stumbles his way through life drinking, doing drugs, and somehow sleeping with most of the women he meets although his heart is else where. He loves and is loyal to his friends. He has charisma and is a very likeable character. Buy it - its delight to a watch.
