Product Description

Product Description

Jake O Kane, Northern Ireland s most outspoken comic, has poured all of his jokes, insights and feelings about growing up in a war zone into his hilarious new show, Tear Gas. Combining the stunning photographs of legendary Belfast photographer Brendan Murphy with computer graphics, Jake tells the story of his upbringing on the streets, where rioting with police, army and the other side was a recreational sport. This DVD was filmed live at The Empire Laughs Back comedy club in Belfast. I've been doing routines about the Troubles for the past 16 years and I thought it was time to decommission this material; after all, the paramilitaries have supposedly decommissioned their weapons, he said. Ulster people are known for their dark sense of humour and I hope this DVD captures what it was like growing up during such a surreal time. As a young boy - the routine searches, the presence of army on the streets, the sound of helicopters overhead - were just part of everyday life. Jake's comedy provides plenty of belly laughs but it also offers unique insights into the corrosive effects of division and sectarianism. After all the laughs, the audience is left with a feeling of hope for the future.

Review

They came, they laughed, they cried; the comedy junkies were out in force for Jake O Kane's recording of his new DVD Tear Gas at the Empire Laughs Back Comedy Club in Belfast. With not a seat to be had you were just grateful for a spot near the bar or a glimpse of Jakes head. Was Jakes Tear Gas show worth its salt? On this Tuesday night it truly was. Yes there were tears, but they were tears of laughter. Jake poked fun at Catholics, Protestants, Spides, snobs, priests and preachers and of course gingers. All jokes were delivered with a warm smile and were well explained for the English in the audience, and of course the DVD viewers. Jake hit the nail on the head so many times in this show that he could have built the Maze jail ten times over, and when he proceeded to ridicule and applaud the favourite Northern Irish pastime of recreational rioting, I thought the crowd were going to start a riot with laughter. This show actually left my facial muscles aching from laughter. --Fate Magazine

As somebody who did indeed grow up through the "troubles" I can relate to the jokes in this DVD - as usual Jake has a go at everybody, nobody from either "side" in norn iron is safe here and it's all the better for it. If you like Jake on the Panel and Blame Game you will love this - don't just think about it - Buy it!

Well I stuck this on the other night with a full house. All ages from 20 to 50, it's the lighter side of the troubles that went on here. He takes a dig at all sides and I swear when you watch it you will say I know someone like that. This place would have been a very hard place to live in without guys like Jake that has a special way of making fun of some situations and turning it round. So if you want a laugh get one in lol

We'd seen Jake on a BBC Northern Ireland show,a long with other comedians but my wife and I loved what he did, so I went out of my way to get this because the stockist had none when we first looked. I e-mailed Jake himself and he made stick available through Amazon and we are delighted he did because the show is absolutely without parallel as far as we are concerned - laugh, I nearly paid my rates bill. This is a very funny comedian in our opinion and if you like Irish comics you'll love him.

I've felt ripped off by some of the DVD's I've bought over the last few years but this one has delighted us and I recommend you get it. Great to see an Ulster comedian with such a well polished act.

I have to be honest, when I first bought the DVD I really wasn't sure what to expect. I had never seen Jake in concert and my only exposure to his work was being the audience of The Blame Game.

However, needless to say I was very pleasantly surprised. Despite the photos and explanations, I found that first-hand experience of many of the topics of discussion, gave me (and my friends of similar age) a unique perspective. My younger friends, who had no experience of many of Jakes observations, laughed, but not in the same way or even at the same time.

The material was well written, following a logic progression and ending on a very positive note. Perhaps the funniest part of the DVD (if one could be singled out) would be Jakes body language and facial expressions, which really transport you to the streets of Belfast.

In conclusion, there is something in this DVD for everyone, but this will depend on your experience of `the troubles'. Concepts that some will take for granted are explained sufficiently to make the humour accessible, but the level at which these jokes are understood will greatly vary. It is one thing to know how stupid a parker coat looks, it is an entirely different animal to have owned one and been told to `watch the roads'.

Fortunately I do not have to mimic Gerry Adams' memory lapses when it comes to not only Jake O'Kane's Tear Gas DVD, but also Jake in general. Having been lucky enough to see him live in Derry, it was great to discover that he had a stand up DVD, my only complaint would be that he only has the one to my knowledge. Jake, has the unique talent of being loved by both communities in N.Ireland and essentially has the freedom to take the complete p*ss out of both. His ability to bring the Troubles into a humor and describe how the likes of rioting and fighting were recreational sports as well as how the people of N.I are physically evolved to allow for better rioting is second to none and is highlighted in the Tear Gas DVD. Outside of the DVD his stand up shows are completely unbelievable and he has a way of always getting the crowd involved in some way shape or form. For anybody from N.I i would highly recommend Jake O'Kane's Tear Gas DVD, and even for those from outside the UK and Ireland whom enjoy a good laugh, although some of the jokes may go over their heads. I look forward and have great anticipation on waiting and hoping that this living legend of a comedian has more DVD's in the pipeline, and he truly is a one-off.

Jake has been the star of the Northern Ireland comedy circuit for many years now and this DVD captures him at his absolute best. Jake pokes fun at all sides, trust me when I say no-one is spared. His hilarious take on what has become known as Robinsongate may be the funniest piece of comedy ever performed about Northern Irish politics. Jake like all great comedians also takes plenty of opportunity to poke fun at himself throughout. I can't recommend this enough.

I bought this DVD after seeing Jake O'Kane on an episode of The Blame Game and it's one of the most brilliant pieces of comedy I've ever seen. Being Belgian myself, I'm living proof that you don't have to be a Belfast local to enjoy it, you'll be laughing out loud either way.
As he points out himself during the gig, Jake doesn't take sides in his comedy and mocks indiscriminately. Apart from that, he manages to give outsiders an idea of what it was like growing up in Northern Ireland and how the Troubles still resonate in the present. I would definitely recommend this DVD to everyone, whether you're specifically interested in NI or just looking for a laugh. So go on and click the 'Buy' button, you will not regret it!
