A young boy named Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Road) has troubles at home (his parents are divorcing) and at school (bullies pick on him mercilessly). But when a mysterious girl named Abby (Moretz) moves in next door, Owen hopes he's found a friend, even though she smells a little strange. Unfortunately, his new friend needs blood to live, and the man who seems to be her father (Richard Jenkins, Six Feet Under) goes out to drain local residents to feed her. But even as Owen starts to suspect something is wrong, having a real friend might just matter more. Because the Swedish film adaptation of the novel Let the Right One In (on which Let Me In is based) was surprisingly popular and critically acclaimed, it's going to be hard for Let Me In to avoid comparisons. Surprisingly, it retains much of the flavor and spirit of the original. It's not as understated--this is an American movie, after all--and some of the creepiness is lost along with that subtlety. In this 2010 fantasy romantic horror a disfigured man is taken to the hospital where he commits suicide, leaving behind a scrawled note that reads "I'm sorry Abby." Two weeks earlier, 12-year-old bullied loner, Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) sees a young girl named Abby (Chloë Grace Moretz) and an older man moving in next door and they become close friends and she encourages him to retaliate. But where will it all lead and what secrets will be revealed?
From the dramatic opening scenes, this shows promise as we are instantly aware that Owen has some disturbing ‘issues’ but the prequel type start spoils the suspense somewhat [lose a *]. The music is suitably atmospheric and the two youngsters are absolutely superb in their respective roles and it’s easy to forget the horror and begin viewing this as a touching young love story -before the horror kicks back in [regain a *]. There are some gory scenes and suitably scary moments, but the true horror is the reality of the bullying and the strong bond that develops between the two main characters.
The single disc plays two trailers before going to main menu offering play, set up [5.1/audio commentary, subtitles English shd/none], scene selection and special features [making of, special effects, car crash step by step, tv special, deleted scenes, poster and stills gallery].
With some child swearing, nudity in the form of a naked breast and some morally disturbing themes [if you consider the basic love angle –touched on in ‘Vampire Diaries’] this will not settle well with everyone. Although highly entertaining with some strong tension and suspense, there are some slower sections, especially in the early part, but a definite ***** recommendation.

+++ WARNING: This is what the free software of the "world-leading translation software company"(!!!) translated my original German review from amazon.de into (sic!!!) - This is what I got, for being too lazy, too translate it myself. I almost collapsed, while reading it. Hilarious, so have fun! ++++

"I saw the Swedish original LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, looked at briefly thereafter from the remake LMI to experience and it to the comparison. The differences are simply enormous, although about 85% of the scenes are almost identical.
First + the positive:
a) for already 3 years I am a giant fan of Chloe Moretz and expect only large acts of it. It plays also here very well, approaches however not to the radiant emittance of Lina Leandersson as vampire Maid Eli in LTROI.
b) compared to other “verhunzten” remakes is this here completely acceptably.

BUT: Let the right one in (LTROI) is superior to that remake LMI in ANY REGARD. Not, because that is already original by SE better and better, but:
1. Swedish in language + mentality + landscape in the original contributes naturally also to the singularly melancholy tendency of the film. Further highly to praise the unbelievably great music score is with LTROI, which never FORCES ITSELF upon, like much too often in other films. And thus this Score supports just the atmosphere simply magnificent (in remake LMI is missing this completely - badly!)

2. further gives it during that about 110 min. with LTROI several settings and scenes to see, which I am about never forgotten. Not least owing to the virtuoso camera and picture language, which pleased me extremely well, anyhow better than with LMI.Read more ›

The original swedish film Let The Right One In, is a horror masterpiece. This, director Matt Reeves' follow up to Cloverfield isn't quite as good but manages to be a creepy and enjoyable horror movie in it's own right. Very well acted and well made, Kodi Smitt McPhee and Chloe Moretz are two of the best child actors around at the moment, in fact Chloe Moretz may be one of the best child actors ever. It's very faithfull to the swedish original and if you haven't seen it you really should. While this is as i said a very well acted and well made remake it is at the same time really for people who don't like subtitles as it's practically identical to the brilliant original.

It's hard not to judge this film in terms of the original, but in fact it is a very good movie in its own right. The action is set in the remote American hinterlands of the high mountains of New Mexico. It's the depth of frozen, claustrophobic mid-winter, 1983. An isolated 12 year old boy miserably struggles to avoid being tormented at school; his separated parents head for divorce and his mother anaesthetises the pain with religion and the bottle. Bullied and vulnerable, the boy is very susceptible to the strange girl who moves into the apartment next door. Except... she hasn't been a girl for very many years.
The story of their developing relationship is told with great dexterity and delicacy. The performances from the two young actors are extraordinary; highly emotional without being sentimental. At all times the fragile nature of the children's growing trust and affection is brutally enhanced by the aggression and cruelty of the bullies, and by the vampiric girl's fundamentally bestial nature. This isn't Twilight. There's no soft-focus, doe-eyed beauty to the nature of a creature which must tear flesh to feed, or die itself. `Let Me In' pulls no punches about the savagery of the vampire or its horrible weaknesses. The scene where the girl is *not* invited in and suffers the consequences in order to win the boy's trust is... gruelling. Yet of course by far the worst behaviour, the most appalling brutality, comes not from the vampire but from the normal children who delight in making the boy's life nearly unbearable.
`Let Me In' uses very few of the normal cinematic tricks to startle the audience. There are hardly any `boo!' moments. But there are plenty of chilling, horrific moments, and a gradual racheting of tension throughout.Read more ›
