Product Description

Product Description

Winner of the prestigious Camera D Or prize for Best First Feature at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, and one of the most controversial films of the year, LEAP YEAR (Año Bisiesto), from Mexico, is the outstanding debut feature film of Australian director Michael Rowe, a character study on loneliness, featuring an extraordinary leading performance by Mónica Del Carmen (Babel), supported by Gustavo Sánchez Parra (Amores Perros, Man on Fire). This highly charged sexual thriller, set within the small confines of a Mexican apartment, follows 29 days in the dispirited life of freelance journalist Laura Lopez, as she moves from one anonymous sexual encounter to another. Soon, Laura meets a man by the name of Arturo, and it is not long before she is submitting to demeaning sexual acts as part of their relationship, a tragic psychological reaction to a secret trauma from her past, which occurred on the previous leap year. When Laura marks a red square around an upcoming date on her calendar wall, the wheels are set in motion for what will turn out to be a startling conclusion.

For most unattached women a 'leap year' offers an opportunity to propose marriage to a reluctant suitor. But the main character in this movie, Laura, has an entirely different agenda in mind. Treated like dirt by her random lovers she finally finds a man who sees her as a person rather than a sex object - but even he beats and abuses her. Yet she accepts it all. It is only near the end of the movie that the viewer realises the reason for Laura's submissive behaviour - and her long-term plan for February 29th.
Not easy viewing - the entire piece is set inside Laura's rather claustrophobic, rundown apartment - but a compulsive study of a damaged individual that stays long in the memory.

This is a tale of a young woman in Mexico and her empty life. She works from home as a journalist but for most of the time looks out the window at the happy couple in the apartment opposite or her other neighbours in their small gardens. She seeks some solace in one-night stands and eventually finds an affair that goes beyond the single occurrence. This affair becomes gradually more and more sado-masochistic and she takes full compliance and enjoyment in this. In between times she is visited by her younger brother and as time goes on it is revealed that she is mourning the death of her father. The story is well thought out and the performances are extremely realistic, especially the lead. very good

This is a film that is hard to categorise, described by some commentators as a graphic portrayal of loneliness, it is that but a hell of a lot more. It tells the story of one month, February, in the life of Laura; played with remarkable sincerity by Monica de Carmen. She is desperately alone; she works from home for a business magazine called - imaginatively enough -`Your Business'. She fills the emotional void by fantasizing about people she sees, pretending that they are her friends, or by going out and picking up random hombres for sex. They all have one thing in common and that is they like doing a post coital `runner' - before the sheets have dried.

Then she meets Arturo and they go at it hammer and tongs as the old saying has it. She seems to be quite imaginative in the experimental sex department and as it develops it starts getting more into the sado masochistic side and the ritual humiliation - like watersports, before going ever darker.

This is a directorial debut for Australian director Michael Rowe and to call him ambitious is an under statement. To tackle such themes was always going to be challenging, yet he has done it in a caring yet honest way. There is also no background music at all; this lends itself to the realism he is aiming to create in that all of the emotion evinced from the film is through the on screen performances.

This film has garnered many plaudits including one at the Cannes Film Festival but whilst it should be praised for its high `art' value, it will not be every bodies cup of tea, actually it could very well put most people off their tea with some of the scenes.

A poignant little story that blasts aside the idea of the lonely single woman incapable of obtaining the type and style of sex she desires. This Leap Yeasr is not the US film of boring dross of the same name.......I pity people searching for the latter who connect with the wrong film, and smile at their blushs!
LEAP YEAR,a Mexican film, reveals the depths of sexual want and desire concealed within the human nature; sexual violence for naked pleasure.
That the character here is an intelligent female and a journalist adds a frisson to this tale.No blood and guts. But the date marked with an X on a wall calender could be a ticking clock of.........

not sexy nor thrilling . This is a slow paced well thought out little film . Great to see such a real looking woman having sex , rather than the usual plastic doll . Yes the s m is violent rather than being titilating but then this is a film to make you think rather than to turn you on . Reccomended x

Yes, tragic as one other reviewer stated and equally grim in it's presentation. I think though the producers have tried to "cash in" somewhat on Last Tango In Paris which is boldly stated on the DVD cover that this one is being compared to.
Last Tango was famous for being erotic no matter which side of the fence you sit on, however with this movie the scenes which are propably being touted as erotic, are anything but. They are rough, brief, animal like and I would imagine will disgust some viewers.
Another quote on the cover from "Total Film" says "Tense and Explicit" No, it is a story which has undertones of someone being in the position of the lead, but in this case instead of creating a broad picture of her miserable life, we are dealt encounter after encounter with just one theme. The supposed erotic scenes are not in any way explicit and more deserving of a "15" rating.

You will have to fight hard to stay awake watching this awful DVD. Perhaps it might have been more watchable if the main female star of the film was worth watching. Sadley this wasent the case? Perhaps I am spoiled by watching too many Bound Heat DVD's and their beautiful young nubile Czech starlets
