Product Description

Still grieving the death of their only child, Alice, a young couple relocate to the remote town of Wake Wood where they stumble on a group of villagers practising Pagan rituals. They soon learn that this ritual has the power to bring back the dead, and would allow them three dats with their beloved daughter.

They agree terms with the village leader (Timothy Spall) but then far bigger questions loom... what will they do when it's time for Alice to go back? Will she go back peacefully? Or are there more sinister forces at work?

Despite the cover of the DVD showing the Hammer logo, Wake Wood is only presented by Hammer, but not officially a Hammer movie. Exclusive Films were involved, but if you watch any of the credits, Hammer Films are not actually listed. Despite this, the film itself is very good, if a little slow in places. But the blood and gore scenes are full on, right from the outset with the dog attack - very bloody and very well done. The film has elements of Pet Sematary (bringing the dead back to life), but has it's own take on the practice, with, again, some quite gruesome scenes for the resurrections, and the creepy locals of Wake Wood, with their terrible secrets and practices, help create a disturbing atmosphere to the whole proceedings. And be prepared - the ending is genuinely horrific. The only shame about Wake Wood is that it wasn't given more of a cinematic release - it was released in one cinema in London and one cinema in Ireland, despite a reasonably good review in The Sunday Times. In my humble opinion, the fact that it is only presented by Hammer makes it more of a curio, rather than a necessity, for Hammer Film afficianados. But it is still a good film - maybe not worth 5 stars, but definitely worth 4.

This is essentially an irish/swedish co-production. The Hammer aspect extends to the films presentation and would seem to be a sales pitch, but in actuality there is a Hammery feel to it to some extent, despite the modern use of grue..

Yes, this film is gruesome. Memory alludes back to similar themed films such as Pet Sematary, Dead & Buried, Wicker Man & The Witches (hammer), even the irish sense of impending doom of The Eternal perhaps. As regard literature there are a multitude of doomed back from the dead, including of course The Monkeys Paw by W.W. Jacobs. Does this suggest its just a cheap film using old motifs? In a word, no. Its actually got proper actors doing proper acting with lines & eerie british-irish eccentricity. Amidst this every day tale of country folklore, it does get very bloody in some gruesome moments, all accentuated with a very simple but effective soundtrack that even utilises a theremin to good effect.

A well wrought storyline, working within the constraints of the tight budget & schedule, with occasional flashes alluding to past glories, even flavours of much older cinema. Does this not then sound like a Hammer styled film..if only in name?

The twisty turny story may to the jaded seem old hand, old style. Almost a sense of mystery theatre to the ensemble acting, where a short tight script hurtles to the obvious conclusions, or one of those psychological slightly too modern Hammers..But its pleasantly surprising in that it tells the tale concisely, wastes no frame on anything not important to the entertainment & the tale. And in this age of crass short attention spans that precise pressing of ones buttons is both a blessing and a curse...like the movies theme itself. Move to the country, join in some rituals, see for yourself.

Wake Wood is a genuinely creepy horror film that leaves you feeling more than a little bit unsettled after it is over. Filmed in suitably eerie locations in Ireland it is one of the most atmospheric films I have seen in a very long time. There are those who have compared it to films such as Don't Look Now, The Wicker Man and Pet Sematary, but Wake Wood easily establishes its very own niche in the horror genre. The mostly Irish cast is quite good but English actor Timothy Spall is truly creepy as the town elder "Arthur". Young Irish actress Ella Connolly is also superb as the young daughter "Alice". It is one of the spookiest films I have seen in years and is a most welcome change after years of slasher films and the more recent extremes of films such as Hostel and Saw. Yes, there is some pretty graphic violence in Wake Wood but what will stay with you after you see it is not so much what you see but the sense of uneasiness the film will leave you with. The ending will also leave you shaking your head. Welcome back Hammer.

I watched this film a few weeks ago and I found it to be an above average horror film. There were some nice views of the Irish countryside which added to the nice atmosphere. It is about a young couple whose daughter is torn to death by an angry Alsatian dog not very far from their home. To get over the terrible loss of their daughter they decide to start a new life in Ireland in a small village called Wake Wood. Soon after they arrive there the girl's mother Louise finds that the local villagers are involved in some unusual behavior. The story told in the movie was actually quite good, I will give the movie that much. Dealing with a family torn apart by the death of their little girl, then given the chance to see their deceased girl again for three days, and for three days only. But of course, something is missing... Actually the story was much similar to the plot in Stephen King's Pet Semetary.

For scare effects and scare value, then Wake Wood in my opinion was very weak . There weren't any moments that made you jump. Not everything in the movie was bad, mind you. There were scenes and scenery that were working well for the movie, but it just never came to any scary moments. The acting in "Wake Wood" was alright as well. The movie was carried by Aidan Gillen (playing Patrick) and Eva Birthistle (playing Louise). The role of Alice (played by Ella Connolly) wasn't particularly well executed and could have been more creepy with another child actress. For a horror movie, then Wake Wood was a very uninspiring, uninteresting and non-entertaining movie. If you like horror movies, then there are far better ones out there. The movie is worth checking out for the story alone, though, just bear in mind that it is much similar to the works of Stephen King.
