Largely forgotten and always overlooked, the original Children of the Corn (1984) was made for bargain basement prices, and received a lukewarm reception from critics. It wasn't until the picture reached videotape, that people began to notice its odd charms. Horror has always flourished on the home format, and in the 80's, we had enough to choose from. The slasher craze had spread to most areas of popular culture, and with Freddy and Jason slicing up audiences, most of the studios were looking for fresh inspiration. Is it any wonder they turned to Stephen King? Most of his best work had already been tackled by 1984, leading New World Pictures to Night Shift; King's collection of shocking short stories.

Something is very wrong in a small town called Gaitlin in Nebraska. Every adult is being brutally murdered by children who are in a dangerous cult which is led by a preacher boy named Isaac (John Franklin) influenced by a demonic force which the children call "he who walks behind the rows". Now it is up to Burton (Peter Horton) and his girlfriend Vicky (Linda Hamilton) who accidentally stumble across Gaitlin to save the town and the rest of the children from Isaac and his cult. COTC was a great and creepy classic with great performances especially from the kids but also Linda Hunt right before her fame in the terminator series, the soundtrack was also brilliant and although it was well paced during the start it does slow down a bit during the middle. Still the original film had a lot of suspense and atmosphere and the special fx were decent which made it a great cult classic.

Cameo in the third, which is OTT gore galore but set mostly in a big city. The third film is only very slightly better than the second film which, aside from some genuinely funny moments, is well and truly fubar'd by some atrocious acting (even worse than Spice World: The Movie, S Club: The Crime Against Humanity, that film where three quarters of All Saints 'try' to, and I use the term loosely, 'act') but is just about watchable. The horror, in both senses of the word, would continue for years to come with the culmination of a TV movie remake of the first film. These films can be enjoyed but I warn you if you do watch them the dire acting if the second will haunt you the rest of your lives.

Children Of The Corn - In the town of Gatlin, Nebraska. A strange boy preacher named Isaac convinces the towns children to believe in a demon called He who walks behind the rows, one day Malachai who is Isaac's second in command leads all the children to brutally slay all the adults in the town. A few years later Burt and Vicky are driving across country for Burt's new job as a physician, when they hit a young boy who was standing in the middle of the road. When Burt gets out to check on the child, as a physician it's blatantly obvious to him that the child was already dead before they hit him. With Vicky in shock at what's happened, Burt decides to put the body in the boot and get to the nearest town. Eventually the two end up in the deserted looking town of Gatlin, as usual in these films, the couple split up and Vicky is captured by Malachai and taken into the cornfield. Burt now has to find Vicky and save her before she's sacrificed to He who walks behind the rows, with no idea if the children have been brainwashed or if there really is a demon in the corn fields.

Children Of The Corn 2: The Final Sacrifice - Continues almost immediately after the events of the original. The residents of Hemingford, Nebraska, the town next to Gatlin decides to take in the children despite most of the evidence pointing to the children being the cause of all the adults deaths in town. John Garret, a reporter for the Worldly Inquirer is in Hemingford with his son Danny to report on the children being taken in. In no time at all, one of the former Gatlin children enters the corn fields and is possessed by a demon sent by He who walks behind the rows, over the course of the weekend, the children in town start killing everyone over 18.

I found this box set in my local Cash Converters for almost nothing and since I recalled that I enjoyed the first part, I couldn't resist - I had nothing to lose!

There's no way that I can even approach the depth and passion shown by the other reviewer, here. I can only add a few things that echo what they said, plus that Radio Times online, strangely award one, two and three stars, accordingly for each one, but the IMDB only has a healthy score for the first.

I'm not really a horror fan, let alone an expert, but do know there's an awful lot of dross out there - including from Stephen King. I first saw Children of the Corn on the ScyFy channel and was struck by its immediacy at being something different and rather like 'Tremors', it had a fast-moving offbeat sense to it that also had lots of inventive humour and fun. It wasn't all about total violence and gore but still had enough to make it worthwhile watching. For budget films - less than a million for any of them and still be entertaining is an achievement in itself.

There's something rather earthy and fundamental about a connection with a crop that grows in American soil and that is probably more American than any other.

As the other reviewer also stated, there's a lot of extras included - I won't be accessing them myself - I rarely do, with any DVD - but it does add to the sense of value for money and if you really do like the films, it's all there for you.

I would probably award pt one 4 stars and 2-3 stars for the others. I'm not really in a position to say whether really keen horror fans will go for these or not, but I'd guess Stephen King followers probably won't be disappointed. Personally, I'm glad I chanced upon it, but admit that I wouldn't have thought of considering it if I'd only been browsing online.
