Again John Powell proofs to be an excellent composer.
With all his diversity, he amazes us again with this experimental piece of music.
This one is incredibly well produced and if you like the percussion and introvert themes
this turns out to be one of his best!!! (The movie is Fair Game ,The composer John Powell, Amazon!!)

John Powell continues his collaboration with director Doug Liman. The thing with composer collaborations is that they usually stick with their directors even for the bad movies (Jumper anyone?). Fair Game is definitely not a score to judge John Powell's capabilities with. Some may compare this effort to Green Zone where it was mainly background score, but for me at least Powell's score carried the emotions and intensity of the action there. Here it just seems like he could have scored this in his sleep. I can't imagine he spent that much time on this film.

The score is extremely simplified to a point where it feels like it's running in place and you're not really moving anywhere. There are a lot of John Powell elements at play here and any fan of his can pick out his trademark techniques and sounds, but to what avail? Really there are only one or two standout tracks. I really like "Gathering Intel" and "Joe's Report", but if I had to pick something else I really couldn't tell you because it all meshes into one.

So, is John Powell's score bad? Not at all. It's just not a standout score. Powell is at a point in his career where I think he can't really compose a bad score even if he tried. He's just that talented. I mean How To Train Your Dragon is by far the best score this year so far and it looks to stay that way. I love Powell's music a lot, but even I can't deny that this one is a dud.

The movie this soundtrack was made for was excellent. With that said, I don't try to relive the movie from the music when I sit back to enjoy a soundtrack. I just want to enjoy the soundtrack. And I certainly did enjoy this one - had to get up from my bed and dance. Not wild and crazy dancing, but cool, slick, and sexy dancing. Listen to "White House" - you'll get my meaning.

I'm old enoough to have heard and often "Loved" almost every type of music, from jazz to Shostakovich, but THIS
JOHN POWELL exciting, THRILLING, type of music is not only hypnotic, in the sense that the urge to "hear it again"
is always new, fresh, but he uses EVERY and UNUSUAL FORM OF PERCUSSION KNOWN TO MAN as if that energy, that changing rhythm, is the PRIMARY MELODIC THEME! I humbly suggest that THIS Powell "musical" film score for "FAIR GAME" is possibly a new, separate,out of easy placement in "known" categorization! There are suggestions, often short or modestly introduced, of some melodic strains played by usual instrumentation, but that is not the driving tempo when Powell's overwhelming, always changing, cadency has seized your mind and limbs! I must add, that in a primary sense, this music might fail in a "usual" role in this fine documentary-type motion picture, but has arisen, probably without conscious intent, to a "stand alone" realm of content YOU'VE NEVER RESPONDED TO IN JUST SUCH A WAY BEFORE!
