Product Description

Paris. The turn of the 20th century. Dr.Georges Bonner(Anton Diffring) really doesn't know how to grow old gracefully. He runs a private practice for rich patients and has a sideline in sculptures of beautiful women who pose for him, all at the sprightly age of 104. However, Bonner's secret beauty regime involves regular harvesting of glands from involuntary donors and a regular tonic of essence of gland. If he doesn't take his medecine, Bonner turns into a green ghoul with bulging eyes. The arrival of old flame Janine Du Bois(Hazel Court) complicates matters as does the local constabulary sniffing around, but Bonner is soon to recieve an operation that will lead to eternal youth. However, when old partner Dr. Ludwig Weiss arrives, Bonner is horrified to learn that Weiss cannot carry out the operation as his working hand has suffered a stroke. A new surgeon must be found or Bonner will die a horrible death....
Despite being very entertaining in its own right, The Man Who Could Cheat Death remains a minor effort from Hammer films. One of their original cycle of remakes, this film is a colour remake of a horror from 1945 called 'The Man In Half Moon Street'. Perhaps that is one of this films biggest problems essentially being a remake of a largely forgotten original. The same could not be said of Hammer's Dracula, Frankenstein or Mummy remakes/reimaginings.
Anton Diffring was clearly at this time being touted as a lead in other Hammer productions. He starred as Baron Frankenstein in a pilot for a series called 'Tales Of Frankenstein' that never came to fruition and then was cast as the lead in this film. He is icily effective with his piercing blue eyes and his Germanic good looks combining well with an excellent performance.

"The Man Who Could Cheat Death" is considered a weak entry in Hammer's output. What it lacks in real horror is more than compensated with lush colour and some frantic acting. Anton Diffring plays the doctor, searching for eternal youth - that old, old theme. Needless to say, he is finally defeated, and goes down in a blaze of gory, (sic).

Christopher Lee and Hazel Court give excellent support, in what must be said, is a rather thin plotline. This is the odd one out in Hammer's cannon, falling between "Frankenstein", "Dracula" and "The Mummy". The DVD is an Italian release, and an excellent transfer, rich and vivid. It plays fine in English, with or without subtitles.
