Anthony Hopkins stars as Corky, a ventriloquist/magician with a pathological fear of failure. When his life starts to become surreal, he looks up the girl he secretly loved in high school, Peggy (played by Ann-Margaret), and, with the help of his wiseguy dummy, Fats, sparks fly between them. Merideth plays his agent who discovers that Corky thinks Fats is real, thus setting off a chain of events that includes murder.

Anthony Hopkins is utterly convincing as the fearful and hallucinating ventriloquist. He is so jumpy and intense, and he suffers so deeply from his fears, that you will be on the edge of your seat. Hopkins' manic performance is dynamite; he will break your heart and send chills up your spine. He does a good job with his American accent, and also provides the sarcastic, evil voice of Fats. Ann-Margaret is fine as the cheerleader-turned-haus frau, but isn't as dowdy as she should be. Ed Lauter is excellent as her brutish husband. Burgess Merideth plays the sophisticated and worldly agent with regal aplomb and almost steals the show.
William Goldman's script is thrilling without resorting to gore, and the soundtrack, which is often simply a discordant harmonica solo, adds to the spookiness. I thoroughly recommend "Magic" to fans of Anthony Hopkins and psychological thrillers; you will not be disappointed.

Anthony Hopkins' has been in films for over 45 years, yet, this is relatively speaking
one of his early 'class' performances, of course since 1978 when 'Magic' was released,
his career has gone from strength to strength, among the films since :
* The Elephant Man'
* The Hunchback of Notra Dame.
* The Tenth Man'
* The Bounty'
* Silence of the Lambs'
* The Remains of the Day'
* 'Nixon'
* Legends of the Fall'
* The Edge'
* Amistad'
* Hannibal'
' Red Dragon'
* The World's Fastest Indian'
* The Wolfman'
and 'Hitchcock' among his impressive listings.
In this he plays failed magician 'Corky' who turns to ventriloquism, his
brash approach wow's audiences.
His agent 'Ben Greene' has asked a high-flying entertainment guru to watch
'Corky's act, when the dummy 'Fats' was introduced the guest was well
impressed......'Corky's career was about to take off.
However, when he is told he has to undergo a physical health check by the
network, he panics.
Confused, he flees, ending up in a run-down resort which is run by 'Peggy'
who he'd had a crush on back in their college-days.
Though she is married to 'Hank' a romance between the two develop.
When his agent, who has tracked him down appears telling him he needs
help because he was loosing track of reality because of his obsession with
'Fats'
'Corky' isn't about to admit this, however in truth the puppet really is in
charge,.the entertainer has become two people, he's lost control of his actions.
Things are about to become far more sinister.
'Anthony Hopkins' more than demonstrates the immense talent we've all come
to admire down the years as 'Corky' in this chilling tale.

A moral fable about shyness and creating an alter ego to hind behind, linked to desir and regret. Middle Age people assemble together after years of struggle, Duke has descended into alcohol, Corky is on the edge of success and Peggy has drifted into dowdiness.

Corky hides behind Fats and is nothing without this persona and this is his success and nemesis as he hands more of himself over to his alter ego. The filming on a wide screen is full of 70's sumptuousness. It was as if you could dive into the film and be there with the characters. The plot had a heavy air of predictability and the American middle American morality spun through its web to ensure everything reverted to stasis.

A tale of wanting success but backing away, lost opportunities and finding a meaning, all intertwined with a modicum of the ethereal. It was an OK film but I did not come away feeling charged, enthused or with any greater knowledge of the world. It felt like the actors depiction, a world I had escaped from for 100 minutes. Hopkins does a neat line in 70's mum jumpers and plays the nerd to a capital "N" as his character is believable in its palpable sense of doom. The plot however creaks and groans under a sediment of kitsch and does not know whether to play it straight or descend into full blown horror. In the end it does neither and only raises itself above the surface whilst thrashing the water.

I almost bought this DVD today, as i remember being gripped by this film when i watched it on TV years ago, unfortunately the DVD does not have any subtitles for Deaf or Hearing Impaired viewers. This took a phonecall to Castle Bay Entertainment HQ in London to find out as their website does not give clear subtitle information. I will just have to rely on my memories until a subtitled version is released!

Can't agree with most other reviewers. Firstly, it's not a horror movie. When it was released Attenbrough and cast denied strongly that it was a horror movie at all, presumably to stop it being classed with the kind of movies judged by their kill count and splatter factor. They intended it as a moody ambiguous piece, entirely in keeping with yet superior to a large strand of psychological horror fiction, written and cinematic, produced in the 70's.

Secondly, that said, the character study of Corky Withers is therefore clearly not merely a maguffin to justify some spooky murders, but is in fact the unfolding of the consequences of his personality and choices. Anthony Hopkins puts in a sterling performance, in several voices, to make this happen. Sorry if all that sounds a little pompous and highbrow -- I don't mean it to be.

As to the ambiguity of what's going on -- well let's just say everybody wants to believe in magic. I do believe that was the point.

Anyway, great performances also from Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith ('What's the first rule of being an agent? Never forget an actor killed Lincoln.'), and a haunting score from Jerry Goldsmith -- one of his better ones. So no, not an action movie, not a killfest, not an episode of The Outer Limits. It is as advertised at the time, a terrifying love story. Take it for what it is and enjoy. I for one am so glad to have found it in DVD.
