Product Description

Featuring Bill's trademark musical interludes, observations and stories of the road, Dandelion Mind will be based loosely on the theme of doubt (or will it?), as we follow Bill from his real-life saga of being trapped by the ash cloud, to his barely contained rants about celebrity, TV, creationism and Michael Winner.

He demonstrates new instruments, both ancient and modern, he sings an internet love song, a lament about punk heroes, Iranian hip-hop, and plays a mean folk-bouzouki. Thomas the Doubter gets a new look, and Darwin’s curious obsessions and the myth of intelligent design are all worked over in Bailey’s own surreal style.

He revisits the music of his youth, with a brand-new French Disco re-working of Gary Numan’s hit, Cars, played in his own inimitable way, and maybe some Wurzel-based remixes of classic German techno. Just your normal Bill Bailey gig, then.

Saw this show last night at Wyndhams Theatre in London. Totally hilarious yet thoughtful and thought provoking. His mastery of grasping the audience's attention with comedy timing and musicality is unparalleled ( sorry if the L s are in all the wrong places!) I am 54, my son is 17, we both enjoyed it equally - there was a huge diversity in the theatre audience. My only complaint was I was sitting next to young Australian woman who 'Whooped' at everything he uttered! Still it was a terrific night! He did 3 encores!!!

I saw this show in Lancaster it was the funniest stand-up show I have seen. After ad-libbing with the audience for over an hour thoroughout the show; he still did his material and it was fantastic. Mostly new jokes and look out for the self service check out till part, the whole audience was crying with laughter. 5* I found it much funnier than Part Troll (my previous favourite) and I think because Bill Bailey doesnt have to swear, like most modern comedians, to get adults crying with laughter then it is a massive achievement and so he deserves to be one of Britains finest comedians.

One thing that makes you appreciate stand-up comedy is getting on stage yourself and giving it a go. Many think "I could do better than that", but until they get up onto a stage, it's all hot air.

Reading reviews of this you might get the impression that Bill Bailey has lost his way and that he's not as funny as he used to be. This is far from the case as he has an exceedingly rare gift of making almost everything funny. As an example there is his much cited 'Oud' skit which appears to be an ad lib and yet is the funniest bit of the show.

There is also his gift with songs, which most comedians seem to lose in their 30's, but Bill Bailey still has in abundance. Songs he does include his French version of Gary Numan's 'Cars', an internet love ballad (with all the appropriate l33t metaphors - e.g. LOL, ROFL etc) and even a hip-hop song.
In fact, in this one show there are more songs than on all Bill Hicks' comedy albums put together!

All this being said, the show does lack a central theme. According to the sleeve, it's supposed to be 'doubt' but this ends up just being a one-liner. This is not a problem though as the show just seems to follow Bill Bailey's whimsical train of thought and he is skillful in never hitting a wrong comedic note.

To sum up, feel free to ignore the negative reviews of this DVD as really Bill Bailey is still on good form and you need only look up video clips from this DVD to see that he is enduringly funny.
That said, I apologise if you don't find it funny. I personally found that 90% of the material hit the mark and that it is the work of a gifted comic who is at ease on stage. If we disagree then it is probably out of admiration for a true craftsman...

I saw Bill Bailey on this tour, at the fabled Stornoway gig and yes, one guy DID say "Tell him NOTHING" It was also the one where the Oud fell over and was extremely funny. Bailey is a genius and it was wonderful to relive the gig (there was other stuff at the Stornoway gig that didn't make the Dublin one)

For me, Bill Bailey's breakthrough DVD Part Troll still remains the benchmark for not only his own work, but all standup comedy. Brilliantly funny though he is, I've never felt like he matched that consistency of quality in Tinselworm or Guide To The Orchestra, but I'm thrilled to say that Dandelion Mind is the one I've been waiting for. From start to finish Bill looks relaxed and effortlessly meanders through a variety of comedy styles: observational, musical, anecdotal, character-driven, as well as downright obscure, all superbly worded and delivered.

Needless to stay, the topics covered by Bill are wide-ranging and if you've seen Bill Bailey before, you'll know what to expect. What's different for me about this DVD is the consistency, there were honestly no points where I stopped laughing, it's 99% comic gold. One lovely touch at the end is an encore performance of his classic song Midnight In Parliament Square which he played to the few hundred members of the crowd who had stayed in their seats just in case he came on for one more encore. In an arena of mostly empty seats by this stage, he salutes "the hardcore fans" who had waited around with an oldie.

The extras include at 50-odd minute tour diary of Bill playing tiny venues in remote locations such as the Shetlands and Orkneys, where I was surprised to find that his offstage voice is considerably posher and softer than I expected! It's a great bonus feature though, you get to know him a bit, following him on rambles and birdwatching excursions you get to see the non-performer side of him and it's actually quite interesting.

This is an instant classic to me, I actually can't believe how anyone could love Part Troll and not Dandelion Mind. It's a brilliant standup show, I highly recommend it! It's wonderfully performed and if you don't like this DVD then you probably just don't like Bill Bailey.

Some people are comparing this to part troll and marking it down because of it. I think thats a little mean to be honest. Try comparing it to his last dvd outting (tinselworm) and then do it again.

All joking aside, I thought this was a pretty good show. Certainly better than tinselworm.
Not sure why Bill can't recreate the amazing routines of Part troll but I also think its a little unfair to keep dragging it up as a reason as to why anything else he does isn't worth the effort.
There are some genuinely funny moments. (although I will admit to thinking that his musical material has lost a lot of its punch)

It's not his greatest work no, but it is still some solid stand up that won't leave you annoyed at having paid for it.
