As an avid horror fan I bought this for the sole reason that the 'jobs for the boys' at the BBFC decided that adults in the UK may not watch this film because, according to their infinite wisdom, it will 'corrupt and deprave' an adult mind and as I will not be told what I can and cannot watch as an adult by a bunch of self appointed morons I figured I'd fork out and give it a go. It's not a good film at all and is quite slow paced but quite well filmed, it's does have some impressive cinematography however the boring moments are only 'lifted' by the gross out torture scenes. It's fairly apparent that the film crew were aiming for pure shock value here and not too concerned about any character development or twists and turns in the script but that's no reason not to let people make up their own minds about it. In a nut shell, a very disturbed doctor kidnaps and graphically tortures a couple while constantly dangling the 'I'll let you go if you do this' carrot, it's all very nasty graphically and quite boring but if you're a fan of films like Hostel, Saw etc. you might fancy a look in. Realistic torture scenes yes, edge of your seat stuff it isn't, make up you're own minds and give it a go, it's not a terrible film but it's not great either, don't expect too much and you might like it. 6.5 out of 10.

A Japanese entry into the torture porn genre is more graphic yet at the same time less powerful (not to mention entertaining) than similar Western movies, like Saw, Hostel or a Serbian Film. A psycho who dresses as a doctor (and strongly resembles a young Takeshi Kitano) kidnaps a young couple and subjects them to all sort of degrading tortures. There is at least one powerful erotic scene as the captor fondles the bound captive girl genitals during several minutes. And there is an outrageous ending that resembles the ending of some of Takashi Miike's films. But for most of the time, I found this film pretty dull.

This Japanese splatter offering is surrounded by notoriety, having been refused a UK DVD release in 2009 by the BBFC, whom I quote in saying... 'Grotesque features minimal narrative or character development and presents the audience with little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism.' Scary stuff, but of course it takes more than that to put us off here at Film Gutter...

Grotesque tells the story (story might be a slightly strong word) of Kazuo and Aki, a man and woman who are captured by a sadistic and unnamed doctor. We catch a little of their awkward relationship in flashback, and after one date she's still not quite sure of him. On their walk home they get abducted and awaken in a grimy, industrial warehouse room, tied down and gagged and unsure of what they are about to face. Unfortunately for them it's an unmitigating nightmare of torture and abuse at the hands of their tormentor, who swears he will let the two go if they can sexually arouse him enough with their 'will to survive'. Well that's a normal thing to say, eh?

The foreplay for our disturbed doctor consists of stabbing Kazuo in the stomach, groping and sexually molesting Aki and asking them a range of strange questions, including if they would be willing to die for each other. It's a pretty disturbing scene on a psychological level, but there's significantly worse to come for our leads. As the doctor puts it himself at the end of this scene, 'the real pain begins now...'

The next scene is a distinct step-up from the previous, with our doctor wielding a chainsaw, proceeding to chop off fingers and limbs with the weapon before proceeding to the poor couple's more private areas.

Highly controversial, refused a certificate by the BBFC and banned in many other countries, this lovely little story tells the unfortunate tale of two young lovers on their first date. Aaah,a love story! Well not quite. On their way home they are attacked and beaten unconcious by a madman with a sledgehammer. He takes them back to his place and preceeds to sexually abuse and torture them for his own excitement. Fingers and hands are chainsawed, eyeballs gouged, testicles are hammered with huge nails, castration occurs...you get the idea. If you've ever sat through that other wonderful family classic 'GUINEA PIG: FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD' you'll pretty much know what to expect. Certainly makes for uncomfortable viewing and definitely not for most tastes, nevertheless it's a well filmed shocker and the effects are very good. For gore fans and fans of Japanese cinema it's a must see (if you can get hold of it! (E-Bay will not list it - It breaks their sacred code of Violence!). However, having a bad body odour is no excuse to enact this type of violence on anybody, OK! It's not big and it's not clever! (Watch it - you'll understand).

When the BBFC took the decision to ban this film from general release in the UK, it brought this film fame and attention that it patently does not deserve.

Grotesque is a terrible film with no redeeming qualities at all and easily one of the worst films that I have ever seen. Meaningless torture that, whilst unquestionably inventive in a couple of ways, is nothing more than a series of set pieces with nothing of any substance to connect it together. Yes, it's very violent - but for a film to scare or shock me, I need it all to mean something. It's utterly amateurish and the torture ends with a scene of such utter nonsense that all that's gone before it is rendered even more meaningless as the film opts for a comedy set-piece to conclude it all.

I don't mind the odd bit of out-and-out mindless gore from time to time. But I need it to have something of substance beneath the blood, even if it is really minimal substance, for me to enjoy it. Grotesque doesn't come close to managing it. There's just nothing here at all.

I don't think anybody involved in this emerges with any credit. No-one needs to see this, and no-one probably would have done anyway if it wasn't for the BBFC. Funny how things work out, eh guys?
